    I personally use plain mineral oil on my pocket knives since they invariably end up getting used for food, but if that's not a concern for you another good choice is to head to a bicycle shop and ask about chain lube. They dry to a slick film but are specifically made to not attract a bunch of dust/dirt.

    I live costal.. more inland coast in Southern California and it’s not humid at all. It’s dry, and mediterranean weather/ high chaparral terrain/ desert. Not every coastal area is humid. Only on the south or southeast coast and gulf it is.

    i use remoil spray, i derail the blade (remove glass breaker on most microtechs) put the straw past the blade stock (or in glass breaker hole) and spray while holding the knife upside down to allow it to "flush"out any debris then spray compressed air through to remove any access oil and wipe the knife clean

    Great video Jeff ..I’ve been watching your videos for years now.. thank you 🙏- this is good for some OTF’s but for Microtech - I have a signature blackout Combat Troodon, and a UTX 85 , They both run dry , perfectly all the time .. I do have the proprietary bits and do clean them every so often , they only need a tiny spray of lithium grease on the main spring , by doing that .. they’ve always been great and fire smoothly, and consistently without failure 👏

    I use Rem oil since it's thinner and will also coat the Internals more freely. Plus the button both front and back.. rinse and repeat..

    Great video! Have you ever had the inner Springs ring after you deploy or retract the blade? I'm sure there is a better solution, but what I have done is take the knife apart and add some synthetic Grease, not much, to deaden the ring sound of the Springs. When I 1st got mine, it sounded like a tuning fork lol

    Same as the guy above, I would definitely recommend a flush with alcohol(do several flushes), Compressed air then use a low viscosity oil. If you just keep oiling eventually there will be to much build up. Just did my Microtech like this an it’s back to factory pressure an speed. I edc my Ultratech an it gets used a ton. I build houses so it’s get thrown through a myriad of rolls. Probly not ideal for an auto but with good maintenance it’s been good to go for 4 years now.

    @@CashBoxxer thats funny someone above you stated Microtech does NOT recommend liquid oil for lubricant lol..I haven't had a problem as long as its clean and all the extra lube is out...

    @JGguns1 Zippo lighter fluid also works good for microtech. Cleans and leaves a little lubrication

    What’s the best way store double action OTF’s? Open with the blade out? Or closed with the blade inside rested?

  • @joeisabella6811

    @joeisabella6811

    Either way won't hurt the knife. Spring is at rest regardless. Closed obviously would be safer but I display mine open 🤷‍♂️

    @@joeisabella6811 It’s still odd to me that a DA OTF is still an automatic knife when it’s rested. I thought all automatic knives were supposed to have some sort of spring tension, in order to work.

    Not that I know of outside of some gravity style knives that aren't automatic...the issue is there being another part thats small also making the handle bigger in order to attach it if there was a hinged trap door style...Also the mechanism would have to move it out of the way before the type touched it otherwise there would be tip damage...

  • @dtester

    @dtester

    It would probably cause more problems than it fixes. Unless the "door" is very robust, they would probably be the first thing that fails.

  • @Olumin37

    @Olumin37

    @@dtester I dont think it has to be fragile at all, its just a hinged door. An extension of the button could easily push the hatch open before the blade fires, There is no complicated mechanism required.

    Actually I have to strongly disagree brother, I live right near the original Microtech location in Bradford PA (yes not far from you) and we were always told to use a powdered graphite DRY lubricant and to never ever use any liquid lubricants and OTF automatic knife! However in order to clean them you can use dawn dishsoap and extremely hottt water then afterwards shake the piss out of the thing upside down while closed to try and get as much water out then take the glass breaker off the butt end and blow compressed air straight thru while in closed position leaving the opening for any kind of dust debris or water if you've just washed it out to come out of the knife handle but far as knife maintenance goes on an OTF Auto compressed air is likely all you'll ever need...

    There is no way I would pay that much for a knife I could never fully trust. No amount of reassurance is going to convince me that otf knives are as good as a quality locking folder. There are just too many potential failure points on otfs and they are too delecate for my uses.

    You're not wrong, but you could also use the same logic to argue that no locking folder is as good as a fixed blade. It all depends on your comfort level, and what you think you're likely to use the knife for. It's also worth noting that if the lock on an OTF fails, it's not going to cut your fingers like a conventional folder would.
