Knives are not weapons? What did we find on the battlefield pre-gunpowder and muzzleloaders for'1000s of years? Edge weapons and impact weapons. Every blade I own is a fixed blade combat knife or hunting knife. So while I agree that using a folder for self-defense is not the best option. Why? Because NutnFancy has shown us just how many of these locks will fail on you. So folders for self-defense. Nope! But to say the knives are not weapons makes you look ignorant of our history as a species and also the history of weapons. Some of the oldest weapons you will find are obsidian knives used for human sacrifice (Aztec). What do you think the double-edged dagger was invented for? Picking your nails clean!?

What I meant was "manual or automatic folding knives, or OTFs are tools first, weapons second, generally". The Lightning was designed as a tool, not a fighting weapon. Could it be used for that? Sure. So can a stick, or a rock, or a piece of glass, or just about anything.

Lightning Elite Satin Dagger was the first OTF I bought after 25 years of collecting knives. It's never misfired after 150 deployments. Just bought a Guardian Tactical Recon 040 bc I think Microtechs are overhyped and overpriced. They're stiff and I just wasn't all that impressed when I handled one in person. YMMV.

I really do hope Taiwan is able to stick it to China, I know we (U.S.) are backing them up big time. China should be cool about it. But what can you expect from a government who borderline is bros/supports north Korea, only place in the world right now where it is an open secret that they have WWII level concentration camps going on. Wish we could liberate them but getting involved would be worse than how we did with the Middle East (especially Iraq) which is saying something as it was a Vietnam level whoopsie.

These have been legal to carry in Virginia for about a year and a half now, not to conceal but to carry openly. And I have taken full advantage of that, carrying the Lightning OTF I've had for a few years on an almost daily basis. One of the first things I ever did with it, just to be sure of it, was to repeatedly stab a thick stack of triple-walled cardboard, the kind companies box their merchandise in before shipping it freight. Again, this was 10 or 12 fast stabs at full power. Every single Lightning I've done this with has passed with flying colors. These things hold up. The blade still is a little softer than modern stainless super steels, sure, but daily strapping or honing as you use. It is all that is needed to maintain a very fine edge. These are also very handy if you stitch, trim, or work with leather a lot. It's just very convenient the one hand open and close. There's also an added safety factor with these, seeing as how your fingers are never in the path of the blade so long as you're holding the handle. Almost no other type of knife aside from a fixed blade can claim that. In other words, if you don't have one, then immediately buy one. And use the hell out of it.

I use mine everyday, had them both a year now, still working perfectly fine. Just ordered a MidTech OTF Gloom V2, looks with the Tanto/Hellhound blade style. Looks close to a Microtech.

These Chinese clones of brand name OTF knives fill a niche for those who aren't able to shell out $400+ for exotic steel blades and super tight tolerances. I have a Boker Plus Kalishnakov OTF that I bought to EDC when I don't want to beat up my Guardian Tactical Recon 040. It is made in Texas from Chinese parts by Cobratech. It fires hard and reliably every time and the grind is near perfect and razor sharp out of the box. It's not M390 steel BUT IT IS D2! It's a heck of a deal for $119! Don't turn up your nose up on these lower-priced knives. You might just find a gem.

Good video, I work in manufacturing and I have used a Lightning drop point blade for about five years now. Still works well as a cheap everyday carry. I keep the blade sharp, and clean, at it has been a good knife that I have enjoyed using. The derailment they do is a safety feature in case of the very rare chance it goes off in pocket. I use it more than my higher end knives. Good for cheap price.

I think the big utility advantage of a DA OTF is safe *closing*. If, for example you're on a ladder in an awkward position, and you need to cut something, then put away your knife, a DA OTF is the least likely design to result in an accidental cut.

It's made it a little easier to work, but not a big improvement. I've been shooting it out & retracting it a few hundred times until It's driven me crazy. I like OTF knifes because when I need to use it I can deploy it and put it up one handed while I’m doing my work and Multi-tasking. Cheap knives are amazing for self defense. Knives can be pretty dulled and still be effective for self defense (personal experience) and when the police take them, they usually don’t give them back, also personal experience. You’d be dumb to lose a $450 microtech combat troodon for nothing.

  • @ferrisbueller9991

    @ferrisbueller9991

I imagine a fixed blade is superior for self defense. Shivworks' Clinchpick comes to mind. Or pistol grip-esque blades... (which I prefer to punch daggers, however Cold Steel's Urban Pal is a valid option, the mini pal is super concealable, can barely be seen while gripped, only 20 bucks off amazon) ... like Ka-Bars tdi, Police officers use it so it cannot be bad. Held within belt, you can draw it with either hand quickly. Comes in a larger size, and a smaller grip but same size blade is offered with the Investigator variant. I have my eye on the Benchmade Azeria, similar to the Ka-Bar but has a wharncliffe blade which is slept on heavily when it comes to self defense. While a bitch to carry, something like the Cold Steel Wasp, virtually indestructible, which accommodates a helluva saber grip which is most comfortable 2 me after years fencing. It has a dagger blade great for thrusts but the way it bellies out makes it a capable chopper as well. Only design of a dagger I know which doesn’t sacrifice it's thrust ability for a secondary decent slashing capability.

I've owned three of these Lightnings bought between 2017 and 2020. The first one and third are still going strong despite hard use in my EDC rotation and the usual fidgeting. The middle one had the rear tab on the blade spring fail... It still kind of works, but rattles horribly open or closed with a loose floppy blade, because the rear tab keeps bending out from its proper 90-degree angle. You can bend it back, but after two or three actuations it fails again. Maybe it's just crap steel on the tab or they forgot to heat treat it or something, but it's soft enough I can literally bend it by hand. Still it lasted a couple years and since my other two are still going strong; for $35 I can't complain.

I’m not saying it’s superior to a frame lock, but m390 is tough stuff whether it’s on a kershaw, benchmade, or microtech otf. I’ve got a cf ultra tech that’s my “dressy” oft that doesn’t get used but I feel confident that it would hold up just fine. You can’t fire an otf through material but you can sure stab through just about anything you’d stab with a folder. There’s a video somewhere of someone hammering an ultra tech through a 2x4, no lockup failure at all. The Lightning’s are pretty good blades for the money for sure.

I have a Titan OTF. It's pretty much the same quality and price of the Lightning. I just uploaded a video on my channel about my Titan. I've abused the heck out of it for well over a year and it's still going strong. I carry mine everyday and use it for everything and I dispute your claim of them not being hard use knives. Use the thing and you'll be surprised what it can handle. I should be getting a Lightning this weekend and I plan on using the heck out of that one too. If anyone reads this and wants to know the truth, these cheap OTFs like Lightnings will handle anything you throw at it and they make great edc blades.

Clean it every so often, and it's just as good as any other utility knife. I dint have to keep buying razor blades now😁. I've heard some complain about the amount of pressure needed to open this brand and make. I my self feels that's a god safety feature, as it adds to it being less likely to go off in your pocket, or God forbid, a small child getting ahold of it and opening it. This leads me to the 2nd thing... it doesn't puncture apon deployment, but instead derail's. Seems like anther added safety. This way, if it did happen to go off in your pocket accidentally... you wouldn't be left with a 3 inch wound in your thigh😶😑, causing you to bleed out🤣. You did a great review. Nice review! People don't know - or consider - just how fragile switchblades are. They only see a fast opening knife. They don't see the weak areas of the blade to hold a spring. Or the weak indent that holds an otf open. They only see the speed of deployment. Any type of full tang knife would be better as a weapon or a tool. I guess the "magical open fast knife" is scarier. I'm not guessing here, I'm speaking from real conversations with the actual companies behind this stuff. Tools first. A rolling pin can be a weapon if you want it to be.

Well, there are many grades of 440 stainless. That wouldn't have given much info. I did say aluminum in the video, but again, the grade of aluminum isn't stated in specs on any site, so it doesn't give much info. Are you able to tell me which grade of 440 it is? Or what grade of aluminum?

Hmm, fair question. Well there their aren't types of 440 stainless as 440 is the actual grade of the metal.... There are types of stainless of which 440 is one of them. ( Also D2 stainless is on the $70 midtech otf, D2 is also the grade of the stainless) As for the grade of aluminum there are many alloys, all of which are better than plastic in strength and durability. I figure that it would be a cheap and easily machined aluminum...let's assume the cheapest available... And that is still good aluminum. Microtech is overpriced.

@@KZreadsucksdix you could argue that literally anything is overpriced. And I guess I should have said "type" when referring to "440" steel. Generally, when the steel os described as "440", they are trying to hide the fact that it is 440A or 440B steel, which is inferior to the preferred 440C steel. Saying "440 steel" isn't very descriptive. Same with saying "aluminum frame". There are better and worse versions of both.

I don't like the Lightning line at all, for aesthetic reasons. They feel utilitarian, like a stock utility razor knife, but modified. They are supposedly quite dependable.

@Terry Dean Channel hhhhh ok. If I have described them accurately, I don't understand your beef. Simply said I don't like them, not that YOU shouldn't.

I have limited use of my right arm. I have a Schrade OTF single action knife. If someone don't like my knife they sure as Hell won't like the Colt 1911 on my hip.

Did you say the high end OTFs aren’t hard use?? A microtech OTF can be hammered like a nail through a damn 2 by 4 it can split wood and endure much more and still function normally!! Just watch the dozens of torture tests don’t in microtechs and you will see exactly what I’m talking about. And IMO the only downfall a quality OTF has is if sand or grit gets in the action but a little rem oil clears that right up. But yes if you buy a cheap OTF made in China then of course it’s not going to be hard use 🤦‍♂️

This guy clearly does not work with his hands. I’m up in the air all the time and a lot of time. I only have one hands-free and I tell you this now if you buy a microtech, if you buy a Protech if you buy a bench made even if you buy that new popsicle from Kershaw, they will never fail you❤
