Do you need an expensive spray gun to get good results? ANI GF3 a novice painter’s perspective

In this video I use a cheap spray gun (ANI GF3) to spray clear onto a panel, I’m fairly new to this so mistakes was made, but I wanted to show that you can create a nice finish with some practice using a cheap spray gun and using Upol 2082 clear, this could have been made better if I used a small amount of thinners.

Hi Steve, great video mate this brings back memories of myself painting outside when I first started on this crazy hobby😆 You did a great job on the boot lid mate considering the conditions you had and the fact you are just starting out you couldn't have wished for anything better, I will say that the results you have here is far better than I had when I first started. As you said it's not the best gun for clear but it can do a decent job, you may have got the panel a bit wetter if you had the gun a bit closer to the panel plus as you mentioned adding some thinners will help with the flow out👏🙏👍

Morning John, thanks the finish of this panel could have been better I watched one of Pete’s videos and he had the pressure wound up to around 4 bar I sprayed at 2 so I think more pressure would have helped as well. It’s not a bad job definitely one a beginner would be proud of, I’m going to do more painting videos in the future no plans on anything in the short term except finishing off my alloy wheels 🛞 that’s when my GF3 as a primer gun would come in 😁 although I may move over to wow primer I’m keen on trying that in the new year. Definitely needed thinners again that’s something I’m going to try as I think I can begin to nail a really good off the gun finish adding it, I will take your advice and move closer next time I have noticed that helped at one point where I was accidentally to close to the panel, all part of the fun as you know . Thanks for watching John and for the feedback as well it’s very much appreciated as always.

I think you are doing an amazing job for a beginner mate so keep going, only thing I can add is just be careful if you do paint closer as it will wet up quicker so you may need to move a bit faster, it's just the case of finding your own painting style as within reason the distance and speed will be how you want to do it👍👍

Sounds like a great excuse to experiment with my mini boot lid 😁 and to buy a different colour paint as well 😁😁😯

Hi Steve, really enjoyed that one mate, right up my street, and thanks for the mention😁. As you and John have said, holding it closer will make it wetter, adding thinners will help it flow but do try warming the clear up to around 32 to 34c, it really helps it flow, I did a video showing the difference it makes to the viscosity, it really is a lot. All looking very professional mate with the fluffy mic cover as well, cheers Steve 👍

Hi Pete, and thanks, your welcome! I hope you get some more subscribers from it. I did microwave the clear once but the MRS could smell it next time she used it of course I denied anything 😂 I’m definitely trying thinners soon! And moving it closer I will definitely try I want to be more consistent with my distance. Yeah shame I used the wrong lead for the mic😂😂🤦‍♂️ Cheers mate I will do another one in the new year.

@Cavalier_Steve Yeah, it does smell, luckily I easily persuade my Mrs that we needed a new microwave so I have a dedicated old microwave in my workshop😀, for paint and cold tea😁 Sound was absolutely fine, I just turned it up. I'll look forward to the next one, will be worth putting the gun used in the title as well as people will often search for the gun, cheers mate 👍

@@peteshobbies5383 Haha well done mate! I don’t have any room or a microwave in my garage but I do need to have a clear out that can wait until the spring as a minimum I think 😂 thanks for the title suggestion I will try that. Yes definitely more to come on the spray painting side of things I thought about doing a video on how I clean out my spray guns it’s something I’ve searched for with no real how to videos on it, there probably is but just hidden behind the video title or something I’m sure I’ve see you do it at some point. Cheers Pete enjoy the rest of your weekend 👍

You can get good results with a cheap spray gun. I painted a metal sign with a £20 electric spray gun and got a really good finish. Mixing the paint and cleaning wasn't fun though.

Lol no it never is but cleaning got to be done if you want your equipment to work properly next time! Maybe I could do a video on how I do my cleaning. It’s true what they say, spray painting is 90% prep work. It’s so much more satisfying getting a good finish from a cheap spray gun though is it. I hope you enjoyed the video something different to what I usually do. Cheers.

To prevent orange peel, increase your pressure or reduce paint flow and get closer to the panel.

Hi, great video. Is it the CFM or FAD CFM that the gun manufacturers state is needed. My CFM is 11.4 but the FAD CFM is 5

Hi Mark, I hope this helps you and not cause any confusion, the technical specifications for the ANI GF/3 is at 1-4 bar (14.5-58 psi) it uses 81-210 l/m which equates to 2.85-7.42 cfm So if I use the gun at 1 bar air pressure it will use 81 litres per minute of air which is 2.85 cfm As you say the compressor headline specifications is basically at FAD (Free Air Delivery) for example my 14CFM SGS compressor is between 15CFM and 10CFM which I assume is the compressor’s minimum performance at or near 10 bar and as much as 15CFM when it’s at atmospheric pressure. I hope this makes sense and it’s answered your question for you. Have a great weekend. Steve.

@Cavalier_Steve Thanks Steve, just seems that every mini HVLP gun I look at needs at least 4 CFM FAD, with my compressor only at 4.4 CFM FAD, surely that would mean I'm strangling it? As said it's not for full panels, just spot repairs

You will most likely be ok as your gun will use less than the compressor it will continue to run though whilst your using it but if your doing small items you will be ok, don’t forget you will have air storage on the compressor the bigger air storage the longer you can work before the compressor kicks in again obviously you can continue to work whilst it’s running but if you have say a 5 CFM gun yes you can use it just not continuously, also the compressor will be running at 8 bar if it’s a direct drive and you will be using a regulator so you will have air storage even with a small 25L compressor, oh and also the more pipe you have that will also count towards your storage. The compressor tank will get hot if the compressor is ran continuously so you will get a lot of water buildup just allow it to cool and drain it often, I even have this issue with a 90L compressor. Bigger is better but not for everyone, and with standard 240V house hold electric your limited anyway. This subject is a minefield but your going about it with the right way I think just as you know you will be limited but you can wait a minute for the compressor to recharge and you can go again.

@Cavalier_Steve Thanks Steve, some people are saying I need a 150 litre comp which I find crazy, I will literally be using it for very small areas so hopefully will be OK. I think I will go for the ANI GF3 with a 0.8 for base and 1.2 for clear, I suppose then I would have to buy 2 guns as I can't see the needles sold separately?

I read aswell that I should use a 1/2 hose (with 1/4 fittings) rather than a normal 1/4 hose, I plan to put a water trap and pressure regulator at the gun end of the hose and only need a 5m hose which should be better?
