I have an older 1200w platinum psu.. will I have no issues with the adapter required to install into my existing desktop tower pc or do I really need to get this new type of psu for safety and proper compatibility? What about the difference in pins in the connectors? Thank you
With the 750W PSU and the 3x8 pin, do you get @16 x 4.0 on GPU-Z ? Mine fluctuate between @16 x 2.0 and @16 x 3.0 max. Best regards
I've been using 1000w power supplies since 2011. The one I bought in 2011 was a decent Corsair HX1000 that was reused in many builds, some with SLI, and it currently still works. The thing about power supplies is that they lose efficiency over the years. I tend to suggest not running near your limit and leaving some headroom. And the price gap between something like a decent 850w and 1000w is pretty small.
@michaelv1984

The price gap isn’t small if you already own the 850w. That’s what they are asking, if their current 850 is enough for a 4080 and it is. That gpu is very efficient. I agree though, in most cases if you’re going to buy an 850, might as well go for the 1000 as it costs peanuts to make the jump. But I’d rather see someone buy a quality 850 than a crap 1000 any day of the week. For a 4080 it’s plenty. And sometimes again there are plenty of people that may never need a 1000w psu so buying a quality 850 for the next decade should be perfectly fine for them. I ran a 1080ti then a water cooled overclocked 2080ti before my 4090 on a RM750x for years. Psu still works perfectly fine. I just upgraded to a 1000w when I bought the 4090. Before that I ran an 850w seasonic for 10 years that still works, I just don’t use it anymore.

@michaelv1984
Жыл бұрын
@@deimosok2003 technically you should be ok if you’re not over clocking and don’t have tons of drives and peripherals. That being said I wouldn’t feel comfortable. I upgraded my 750w to a 1000w RMx shift (atx 3.0) so I don’t have to worry about power or using adapters since it has a native 12VPWR output. I am also running a ryzen 9 7900x which is a power hog so I wasn’t chancing it. You could try to run it and see what kind of wattage you’re pulling. Worst that will happen is you’ll face some instability and shut downs, but your PSU should protect your equipment. For strictly gaming on stock clocks you shouldn’t be hitting close enough to that 750w to worry. A 4090 pulls around 300w max during gaming on stock clocks. But you should probably get around to upgrading that 7700k soon as it’s going to hold back the 4090 a bit.

@@michaelv1984 850W is fine for 4090 too... easily. In fact Seasonic Titanium rated 650W PSU was able to handle 4090 with ease, without even having its fan spin on test LinusTechTips did. Im using an RTX INNO 3D 3080 + i7 13700kf with an 750w power supply. Will i have any problem if i upgrade the GPU to MSI 4080?
I have a 750 watt PSU and I wanna get the 4090 but I got my PSU as recently as 2020 and so I don't want to replace it so soon. I was probably thinking of using it for several years when I got it lol.
I have a Seasonic 750W PSU, 9900k, Z390 Gb Ultra, 64gb RAM, 3ssd, 1x7200rpm. Playing VR (HP Reverb G2) with MSFS and F123, i saw avg loads of around 100w on CPU and around 230w on the ASUS 4800 OC ROG Strix, everything seemed stable. Normal temps, no OC. The store owner told me i should update my PSU to 1000w but so far everything seems fine?
By struggling do you mean those power supplies will perfectly handle the 450w+150w=600w and 40% spikes (upto 780w) unless you OC it?

Seasonic Prime Titanium rated 650W PSU's handle even 4090.
Here is my question. My rm850 only has two separate pcie cables. But each cable has pigtails.
We've been using a 1000w corsair PSU to do 4k rendering with Unreal Engine with the 4090, for the most part it's been fine, but as you plug in more things.. hard drives etc, we found under heavy load from the GPU during rendering, it would occasional need more power and shut the computer down, so unless you're going to restrict the GPU power usage you could run into issues even with 1000w. We're looking at upgrading to a Corsair RM1200x.

@@beansfordummies It's hard to say, as I noticed another issue with the machine which could have been causing my shutdowns. Basically I was using the corsair icue software to control the water cooler fans via a hardware controller, and I think it was fighting with the motherboard for fan control causing instability, so I uninstalled icue and wired the fans directly to the motherboard and used gigabyte's software to exclusively be in control. I noticed the issue just before changing the PSU to a 1200W. Anyway, since doing both, my system hasn't crashed once, it's been around 6 weeks now stable.

Someone had enough common sense to just do it. I appreciate that. I have an older 9700k system and a Platinum corsair 860watt psu and guess what... picked up a 4090 on discount instead of the 4080 because it was a 200 dollar difference right so anyway I was thinking i would be OK my psu even had 4 independent pcie connectors for the 40series adapter (6 pcie in total). But everyone online has me freaking out about even turning it on. I have 6 non rgb fans and 2 old school mechanical hd's and 1 old ssd and 1 m.2 ssd. I upgraded to hx1000i from a rm850x because I had to daisy chain the cable to use the 4090 … the 1000w comes with 4 cables
"I don't know who gets 4090 with 750w PSU" - I mean they claim that on 3 instead of 4 cables connected to the splitter you still get 90% performance so technically it still runs significantly faster than whatever you might've had installed previously and then you can upgrade PSU somewhere down the line, especially since right 3.0 ATX PSU have some silly new shit tax attached to them. I mean I still rock my AX1500i from Corsair that originally powered 4GPUs for rendering (which a single 4090 now eclipses in performance and has lower power draw...) so it's not that big of a deal personally unless lack of ATX3.0 features proves problematic down the line with these cards I could try running two of these =)
I tried to see my 4090 + 5800X both stressed to max + all USB devices connected and running like VR and wheels + peripherals, at stock it's around 560W, at max OC with both it's around 709W Now these are without sudden spikes so PSU will be pushed hard and won't last long, if no OC I think 850W is enough if high efficiency one, if OCing or high end CPU then 1000W is a must and maybe 1200W if 13900K or 7950X Edit: these are power from wall

Cool info, Im going to be running exactly the same setup, but as i cant be bothered fitting a 850 or buying a 1000 - from your figures it looks like if i drop the power limit a bit on the 4090 a decent 750w should be fine (allowing for spikes) Also with VR i imagine the 4090 will rarely be on full load - its either FPS capped or half frame rate if it tips over.

Efficiency has nothing to do with it. An 850 watt inefficient PSU will put out the same watts as an efficient one. The difference is the less efficient one will pull a bit more power from the wall to provide that 850 watts.
if you have the $$ for the 4090 might as well get a 1k psu
That means my 700 w psu would be able to run the 4080 fine too.
Asus Tuf 850w psu would fit much better with this build and even better it has a 12vhpwr pins so you dont need the 3 extra pcie extender that makes it look like a cabel fest
