"I respect what Annas doing. There is a set way of how the trainers do it. You go against the grain and you are putting yourself out there. Nobody teaches putting a wild horse in a box stall without a halter. Acclimatizing into a way of life they are going into...Leo Kuntz

I am interested in breaking wild horses as a survival skill. I know it's not the reason most people are interested in such a skill, but it's a very valuable talent to have, especially in a disaster situation. How long does it typically take to turn a wild horse into a trained riding horse? I know it will vary, but it seems from this video that they can learn quite quickly.

Hi Dave. There are so many variables in the answer to your question. If you figure in age, experience, temperament, personality, character, circumstance, previous human interaction, and more, that's a tough question to answer. That also doesn't even take into consideration the experience, talent and ability of the trainer. The short answer is, on average, it would take about as long as a domestic horse but there is a whole different skill set that needs to be applied to gentling and starting a wild horse under saddle. There is also a precision and expertise that is needed to work with the wild ones. Our saying, "green + green = black and blue" definitely applies here. For example, round penning is a common training tool for domestic horses. You would never want to put a wild horse into a round pen until you have gentling them first. We have a 2 DVD-set called Whispers from the Wild Ones that covers the gentling process for untouched horses. You can see it here: www.reachouttohorses.com/dvd.html#wow
