Yes. I answered before watching. After having watched, I have to say great video. I am as guilty as anyone for browsing ebay for gear that I can't afford, watching walk-throughs of stuff I don't have, etc. What I need is buckle down and study music, arrangeme t, etc and the basics of mixing and mastering. Just grasping the basics of it all will take me a long while. Less if I stop wasting time browsing ebay, watching videos, etc

If you are intentional about what you do then having options is good. Before you go buy another plugin, ask why do you need it and what will you do with it. If it isn’t filling a sonic hole then you should probably not be getting the plugin

You’re totally right! It’s not the same as the days when we used to record to tape with a console. I have one plug-in that I use on everything, the Waves Scheps Omni Channel. It doesn’t matter to me what the different modules in the plug-in were modeled after, It just sounds good to me. After that, I only need my Delay and Reverb sends, and I just use whatever Logic has. Just tweak what you already have. You’ll surprise yourself! And always use a reference track if you want a certain sound.😊🤘

I couldn't agree with you more! On 99% of my jobs I use Slate and iZotope, that's it! Now I do use all the iZotope products (Neutron, Nectar, RX8. and Ozone) but I limit it to that. It's either vintage or digital. On drums and bass etc... It's usually Slate. Keys, synths, and Vox it's iZotope. Then my master channel depends on the vibe of the song. Again usually Slate or iZotope! Great video dude!! Thank you!

I absolutely love this video and come back to it often to stop myself needlessly buying more plugins that I don't need. Another point is that the more plugins you buy, the less money'sworth you are getting from the plugins you have already invested in!

Great message! It's definitely not only about plugins for a DAW, it's about so many things in modern live in general. Too many easily available choices seduces us to spread out too much, which often times leads to wasted time and energy - instead of burning through like a focused laser we end up gleaming dimly like a light bulb.

Great video. Goal-oriented approach is the best, and the metaphor of an actual studio is helpful. Limitations are the source of creativity - too many options provide a false sense of security. Good on you for this one.

Yup. Great video! I just went through my plugins the other night and hid a bunch of them in my list. If I find that I miss them/need them, I can always unhide them. Most of them were from bundles where I just wanted some plugins, but the others came with it. My list is much cleaner and easier to find what I need. I definitely have my go-to standards that get me what I want quickly and easily.

I also use some different brands of one kind of plugins. And to use this particular from my choice use to depends on the time period when I use to tend this one than after 1 month I tend to use another one - due to the taste of their respective (color) of sounds and my mood to use the particular taste of sound. But you'r right more than 3-4 make no sense. Thank's for the inspiration to thing about this. Jan.

Another great video! Solid advice! I am slowly building my home studio and working on what is the next piece of gear to add. But then i stopped and recognized i have so much. In fact too much. Its very hard to understand so many aspects of recording and engineering already then having to deal with my own purchasing FOMO problems. People should heed your advice. Thanks!

Hey Sidoti you my friend are a breath of fresh air straight forward and to the point. I myself have experience this by listening to a million people tutorials talking about this plugin that plugin is the cure all. I do own some of the third party plugins but seem to find myself coming back to the most simple plugin which is 80% of stock plugins. Also I want to commend you on a video you did about a month or two ago based on if you can get a professional recording without mortgaging the crib for equipment. Actually you were talking about some other other person that has a channel and insisted that if you don’t spend a certain amount of money $$$$$ then you’re wasting your time. It’s people like you and Graham Cochrane, Wavy Wayne who seems to debunk that myth and the very reason my mixes have gotten better year after year. It’s because of people like you all have inspired us so-called bedroom studio engineers to grow and become good because of the true and straightforward content. Thanks and keep up the good work. Subscribing !

Once again, a great message, full of hope. It motivates me to compose without all this time loss of hesitation. The thing is, when I m away , I use the ipad and most of the time Korg gadget. And then nothing else. the result sounds good to me. A closed environment forces you to use what you have. I start to consider the excess number of plugins as , toys, that I could play with, when my project is over. Who will notice what compressor is used in a track, and especially in the master ? Sometimes , you use a lousy tool, that colours your sound in a way that people, will wonder how you get that sound . What about the scratchy recording from the early 20th century, with just mids? All the collectors that would walk on water to buy some of those records, and listen to them.on a high fidelity equipment..... Thanks for this video and positive ideas. Take care.

Who has an actual Nev ,SSL E, G , J and API just sitting around to toggle through? Maybe if you had an full access pass to Capital Records lol.. In the real world of analog you push your skills and knowledge of the gear. Buying a billion plugins is a sign that you're looking for a plugin with a magic button . Know what you need first and then pick plugins that you feel comfortable with.. I look at new plugins everyday because I TOO ,am a recovering plugin addict lol 😆 Admitting you have a problem is the first step lol 😆

So many of these plugins literally just repackage the exact same divices that are either in most DAWs already or other plugins. They are often overpriced and take advantage of new producer's who dont know how much things cost or what they can get for the price.

Well... that Waves Mercury package has way too many plugins to begin with. I don't even know what I have. I watch a video, "Hmm, that looks cool. Oh look! I have it!" And mate, at least put some old album covers on the face of those fugly IKEA (you know you shop there stop denying it) shelves behind you. I think it would add a nice touch to your studio.

@@SidotiSound hey you got to admit the album cover idea is good though, no? I am terrible at design, but that is certainly something I would do to spruce up my videos. Put some LP album covers on the front of those shelves. It would give the illusion of them being a row of albums I figure. Just my two cents. You do so much for us.
