The struggle of being Asian and having to be placed in certain career paths by your parents or even society. Honestly, I wanted to try out for basketball or even soccer this school year, but of course I got intimidated by the stereotype that I wouldn't be able to do it, and that I should just stick to academic decathlons. So I didn't try out at all. I don't know why it took this video to realize that I should do what I want and not what society prefers or assumes, but next year I will try out for soccer or basketball GLADLY! (: thank you wongfu

Please do. Am asian and didn't do sports because I was wrapped up in robotics club. Not that I didn't like robotics or wasn't good at it but I'm actually pretty athletic and I really regret not doing track for at least one year. Now that chance is gone ever since I graduated high school. But I'll tell you, when we played ultimate frisbee, people don't usually pick me first the first time around. After that no one makes the same mistake twice ;)

Pursue what you want to do. I'm proud to say I am the only asian on my varsity distance track team, which is dominated by white males. But I had to work my a** off to get there. Training after school and on weekends, I slowly climbed the ladder. We are not perceived as athletic individuals, but should ethnicity/race really stop you? Don't be ashamed. In the end, you will only regret what you didnt do. Everyone here believes in you Colleen! :D

Ok, I am not black American but I am east African. I feel that it is society that stereotypes blacks as being rappers, actors, or athletes. But growing up I was definitely encouraged towards the science, business, law route. And so were many other people o know. I guess that the family vs the general society expect different things.

I'm Caribbean and grew up with 2 options : Doctor or Lawyer D: Gonna compromise and become a Psychologist. In fact, most of my black friends have parents with high expectations. It could be an American thing - I live in London.

Same here! I'm from the Caribbean and everyone in my family are doctors and lawyers, so that's the expectation in our family. I'm in the medical field doing as Masters degree right now. My sister, on the other hand, decided to be a musician and she felt so out of place in our family that she even changed her last name because she didn't feel good enough to associate with us anymore. So yes, family and society sometimes have different expectations. I feel you!

It's hard out here being a black nerd. I just want to study biology in solitude yet am frowned upon for analogous notions. I feel for Asians expected to engage in similar undesirable topics, yet do what you feel is right and don't allow others to sidetrack or deter you from achieving goals.

We are born good at certain things and bad in others, that's a fact. However the point here isn't how good or bad you is in a certain thing but how you deal with It [insert the quote of Mewtwo here]. If you're open-minded enough you can do It. The problem isn't in the stereotypes Itself but in how much power you give to It. People often state conditions to Itself - may they be aware or not - and once they do It become a snowball, which can imprison them for the rest of their life.

  • @jeromestrix

Well those high career stereotype are not even a bad thing. Regardless of family pressure, at least your family is thinking highly of you and is willing to support you. Whereas in the generic black American family, there are no expectations

It's all about the work you are willing to put in and the help you are willing to ask for (and sometimes what you're willing to temporarily or completely give up). A lot of people who are "smart" are not inherently so. It's all about the study skills and techniques they've built up over time that allows them to make studying time more efficient, thus shorter, thus resulting in them learning material faster. It's not that they've put in more work, they've just cut out a lot of the down time. There are very few people who are inherently smart. Many more of them were simply hard workers who sacrificed social lives, hanging out at lunch, after school, etc. until they had the skills they needed to make study time more efficient and free up free time to spend as they like. Also, high career stereotypes may not be a bad thing but my brother's grown up thinking he's a failure destined to be a bum because his grades just aren't good enough (he should probably give up the constant video games though and commit to more studying time if he wants that to change). Asian families are willing to financially support you and your education when they are able but they can also be extremely harsh when you just don't make the cut. Kids like that don't tend to grow up with healthy mindsets, though neglect won't do you any favors either. Personally, I don't see Asian families as thinking highly of their kids so much as thinking highly of what someone of their family ought to be able to do. How it affects each individual (to inspire them or crush them) really depends on each individual. Anyway, if you want any study tips I'm open to share. I have a degree in civil engineering, a teaching credential in mathematics, and start optometry school in the summer.

JeromesTrix As a classic example of a "smart guy" I can tell you its not because I am magical. Its because I was curious enough to persist until I found material that was interesting. In my experience the largest barrier to learning is presentation (not because "we all learn differently" -we don't, we learn the same way), if its boring you don't retain it.

I would say the 3 pillars for a black American male would be: sports, rapping/music, or military (not acting). Only when the child is seen as "smart" then they tell them to be an engineer, doctor, or lawyer. It's crazy how the media and stereotypes play on our minds, because it was kinda weird to see an Asian guy good at playing basketball, since they're seen as not the sports playing type. As for the black guy, i wouldn't think black ppl would look at him weird becuz he wasn't good at playing basketball, but becuz of the way he acts lol, it seems corny, but if that's his personality, than oh well.

Brown, love writing, but parent want a doctor in the family. Not even an engineer. I'm good at math, so I could pull that off, but nooooooo. Be a doctor and you'll be set for life, be a doctor and have a ten car garage. Jeez look at j.k. Rowling. A flippin billionaire. And yet they say "what will writing get you?" Btw I may be thinking too ahead. I'm only 12, but I've wrote 25-30 page stories before without really trying. With full detail I may be able to pull off fifty, but I usually get lazy round the end. if anyone can help it's greatly appreciated. And please so negativity.

I'm all for throwing away stereotypes and expectations of you based on your race, but I personally think failing in school even if you're any race is unacceptable. It's not something that you can say "well, I'm just not good at it". Just put in a little effort and don't fail... Also studying for hours with a knowledgable partner for one test and getting a D is rather unbelievable.

takes a lot longer than a few hours to grasp an entire chapter's worth of work, especially if it's physics >< and maybe some people just aren't built to do well in that subject, maybe they think differently than the subject calls for and will always have trouble grasping it now matter how hard they try. Your opinion doesn't seem to be based on any experience or perspective.

See, there's the problem. Society has this hold on us, to make us accept that school is what should be done. College is not for everyone. I'm not knocking on it, if you're fortunate enough to be an academic, that's fantastic. Good on you. But there are others who have a passion in something else, and to really chase that, sometimes a grade will suffer. Sometimes people drop out. And in my opinion, there shouldn't be anything wrong with that. Personal choices. What is the point of going to college and studying up for these tests if you want to be a choreographer, or an artist? Waste of money, waste of time. I'm going to college because my parents want me to have a somewhat guaranteed good future, but in the end, I'd rather be working 3 different waiting jobs (I work as a caterer and I actually really like it.) and be able to pursue my craft in dance freely, than be the lawyer my parents want me to be.

Well I've already taken 2 honors physics courses in school so yeah I have experience. And there are some stupid people in the class but a couple of hours of concentrated studying will definitely get you more than a D... I mean maybe studying by yourself is harder but with another knowledgable guy a few hours is so much time to understand a chapter's worth of material.

Jhune. I agree with pursuing your dreams, but I think academics is a base you should work off of. In sports, in a lot of schools, you're not allowed to participate in sports if you have a really low grade or are failing. Also there are colleges for pursuing everything - drama, music, dance, etc. Just throwing away everything for pursuing your dreams sounds very reckless to me since if you fail you have nothing to fall back to.

EZboyrocks Physics requires a different type of thinking than some people are used to because it requires the ability to derive equations based on each situation given. Not only do you have to memorize countless basic conceptual laws, you have to have a full understanding of them in order to implement them and modify them for whatever problem you're given, and that sort of skill takes a lot longer to get good at than one afternoon, particularly before a test on force and motion. Additionally, frames of reference are a whole other thing all together. So yes, it is incredibly possible that after a mere 2-3 hours of studying, one can still do poorly on a physics test.

LOL WUT LAW? Parents want you to study it but I want to break the shell of aspiring asian law students. As an asian, you will NEVER be able to become a barrister or judge in a criminal court, or represent a large company as a barrister in the current western society. The best asians can do in terms of law is a solicitor, never higher. Asian girls might get a chance to to become a barrister's assistant/ secretary but that's it.

Well... yeah, we all should do what we love, it is not like we are having another chance in this world. I've been wanting to be a musician since I am like 10, at first, my father disagreed, he wanted me to be a doctor, and engineer, I started growing up with my dream, at the begining sucking at it, not having any talent, but I eventually started getting better at it. I am now 17 and my dream is still the same, I practice every day and my dad actually aknowledge my dream, so he will support me. It is not that we are bad or good at what we love, it is the determination we show at it. And that is my opinion.
