Do You Cable Tie Your Conductors in 3 Phase Distribution Boards..? Electricians Matt & Clive O’Dell

Matt and his Dad Clive take a look inside a 3 phase distribution board as part of an EICR. The board is wired in pre 2004 cable colours red, yellow, blue and black and not the brown, black, grey and blue we now install.
Matt points out some potential issues in the board but we want to know your thoughts on using cable ties on PVC single insulated cables please leave them in the comments… do you think the IP rating where the tails come in is correct to IPXXB please leave you comments below...

01:28 - Single and 3 phase breakers
02:29 - Incoming tails
02:46 - Pass or fail IP2X or would you consider IPXXB...?

Q1 Would you cable tie PVC singles in a distribution board? Q2 Would you apply IP2X to the bottom entry where the tails come into the board or IPXXB?

Nothing wrong with ties. All those cables laid on each other in the trunking and should be derated accordingly. Plus they all need to be under significant load for a prolonged period. Design guide covers it. Myth started by Another....... Keep openings tight regardless imo. Great video guys

Nothing too wrong with that board , decent Crabtree design and breakers ( Proper Colours) no big deal with the ties or the eddy and you Carn't beat a tight hole at the bottom.....just needs filling 😜

I can understand why people tie in a D.B particularly with the fly leads from RCBOs but not best practice in my book. It makes removing a redundant circuit or trying to trace a conductor difficult so you end up with ditched conductors just left floating around with a bit of tape over them.

I always put cable ties but never tie them up. I'm leaving them loose. Ppl that complain about grouping factor are full of bs. Look inside the trunking when cables are absolutely stuffed before saying about board grouping factor. I just put loose cable ties in the db just to keep the cables in place. Also, i put browns, blues, and greens in separate cable ties. It looks way nicer

Not worried about grouping factor, that looks to be old 14th edition going by the board and breakers, the cable ties are probably the newest thing in there. IPXXB at the bottom, where's my standard finger and will it actually reach up to those terminals - Paul anyone seen Paul.

The grouping factors won't be the issue (although should always be considered) the issue will be any future work in the CU. If you have to move any of those singles in that CU those ties will make it a pig

How many hundred amps would you have to be pulling before eddy currents could actually heat a consumer unit with separated phases or separated L/N? An absolute shit load of current... Modern AFDDs are gonna heat up a CU faster with thir dissapaited heat. I get the principle but has anybody managed to make a CU heat up with eddy current?

@@paulambrose3003 that was a great watch, definitely more current than a thought. I've seen some older temporary distros with powerlocks fitted in a metal panel, as a connector they're good for 400amp. Yet the designers didn't worry about it heating up (mind you said distro was made of really heavy plate and angle iron)

@@nickbuckle646 I would assume that's more likely caused by thermal dissipation within the trunking? what was the mechanical separation between phases or phase to neutral and was it definitely eddy currents causing heat rather than just overcrowding?

I wasn't talking about a little consumer unit, I would say that the place I saw it inwould have been pulling at least 200a per phase. AFDDs a still not commonly fitted to expensive let alone trying to retro fit to old DBs

Dad said 'proper colours' - how right he is. None of this new fangled stuff welcome here. It's all the EU's fauilt...... I see a further similar comment down the lest, so I'm not alone ! While complaining - I notice the bottom gland with no sealing, and IMHO that's because blind or split gromets / whatever are simply not available generally or at all. A case of a conscience sparky can't always do a good job. But then I'ma an aamateur - so what do I know....
