💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Have you ever wondered why some guitar players sing along with their solos? Is there a musical reason for it?
In this video I'm going to show you how being able to sing along with your guitar playing can be a secret weapon to improving your musical phrasing.
Phrasing is one of the most important aspects of what you play on the guitar-it's what makes melodies musical, memorable, catchy, iconic, interesting, structured, compositional, etc…
In this lesson I cover three main points:
1. The four critical elements of guitar phrasing that make it sound amazing (and how singing along with our guitar playing addresses all of them).
2. Four clear steps you can take to practice enhancing your musical phrasing by singing along with your guitar playing.
3. How combining melodic patterns with phrasing helps us sound musical, unique, and expressive on the guitar.
I believe that being able to sing along with what we play enhances our musical phrasing, and therefore our overall artistry and craft as improvising guitarists.
I hope you give it a try!
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about developing your musical phrasing guitar chops, and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

Just love this I was jamming away today to a backing track but felt I was going through the motions. I watched a Barney kessel video and he said when playing solos play what’s in your head you just proved him right can’t wait to pickup the guitar and prove him and yourself right many thanks.

I never thought about this (probably because I find it annoying to hear it on Glenn Gould, Keith Jarret and others' recordings), but this appears to be a great idea in terms of phrasing. I will try it out immediately!!! George Benson's style of this is NOT annoying. It sounds brilliant BTW.

But how do you go about learning to sing along in real time? Or really I think my question is: how do you learn to audiate? My fingers know my major and pentatonic scales very well, but if I sing a note, I then have to “hunt” for it with a guess and check-ish approach. Or in other words, I may have a melody in my head, but I then have to FIND those notes on the guitar. My inner ear and guitar are not “linked” in real time as it seems yours are. Do you have absolute pitch? Or how does one do this without absolute pitch? Thank you! -Chuck

He probably has relative pitch like the rest of us, but just knows his guitar really well. He will find a starting note as a reference and then he knows the sounds he will get from each fret relative to that starting note. I can't do it myself! Takes a while I think
