💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
When I first learned how to find guitar chords that sound good together, and finally understood WHY they sound good together, it was seriously a game changer. Since then I've developed an approach to clearly finding and seeing chords in a key on the guitar and I'd like to share that approach with you today. This fourth episode of my series called "How to Learn Guitar Chords" is about playing chords in a key, identifying chord degree numbers, and how to construct and practice a specific, moveable, triad chord voicing that I can promise will come in very handy. Don't miss my song examples near the end where I demonstrate how these chord shapes and this theory knowledge can be used to play and understand countless songs.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about finding the chords in a key. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

I'm having one of those "I cannot believe this is free" moments. I bought an online guitar course a while ago, and honestly, this series is so so so much better. Everything seems to make much more sense now, and the logic behind chord and scale building on the guitar is so much clearer to me. I can't thank you enough for this gem.
My music knowledge has improved so much since I found your channel I still can't figure out why you are not famous yet the production, your teaching and everything is top notch. Love from india ❤️

So I got to 4 lessons and I’m ok. I taught myself most of it with KZread . I have learned though and so far I think playing the scale on one string instead of in the shapes caused this latest growth spurt . Doing the chords on one string and your visual aids, SO helpful really thanks.
I must repeat my comment from the third episode here again: simply unbelievable good. Thank you Jared

I love the way you teach - finding your channel has been a game changer for me. Thank you!
I just found your channel today, you are a gem. Thanks a lot
You're such a clear, broad minded teacher. Thank you for this series. I'm finding some gems that greatly increase my understanding.
His lessons are underrated
Great insights. Goes right with your lesson on scales using shell chords (i.e., I, iii, vii), which has perhaps been most valuable for me, teaching that the 5th is not always essential in a chord.
Such a huge moment of understanding! You're the teacher I've been looking for.
How did I not know all this already? I’ve been playing for roughly one bazillion years and recently decided I wanted to learn to play chord melodies. Looking for videos that might help I found this series. I knew most of what was in the first couple videos, then watched his one. I know this will be really helpful as a foundation to what I want to learn. It’s really good to finally learn how chords work together and why. This kind of thing should be required learning for anyone who wants to play guitar.
Great lesson. Definitely will help me get to the next level. Thanks for making this understandable for intermediate level folks.
This is insanely good information. I’m a high school math teacher and man I wish I could teach math like you teach music. My students would love me then. Honestly though, I’ve been playing for 10 years off and on. I can play almost any tabbed song but I struggle creating. This has helped me so much and you’re probably the most clear and concise person to explain it on KZread. Keep it up!
You are the best of the best teachers I’ve learned from. Thank you so much.

great content! Your also a great communicator. Not only can i understand your instruction but your voice is easy and helpful when my brain is expanding so rapidly. lol 😄
A VERY INTERESTING AND VALUABLE LESSON. THANK YOU JARED FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO GUITAR TEACHING.
Excellent video, ty
Thank you so much for your videos. I’m 74 years old and have played guitar since I was 14. I never had a lesson and while i acquired some basic skills progression has always been slow. Then about 6/7 years ago I finally started to apply myself to theory. Since then my progression has been huge. I have watched many KZread tutorials and a lot of content providers are excellent but what comforts me in your videos is the trust you show in that theory. At the beginning it all seems like magic but if I follow the numbers the patterns the shapes it all makes wonderful sense. I mean more than I say, thank you, your videos are brilliant.

"Embrace the difficulty" is exactly what I did to learn all 5 pentatonic shapes, which then made it entirely easier to learn the major scale. I've been putting of chords a lot cuz my guitar has too high an action so barre chords seem to be nearly impossible. This video gives me confidence to learn chords more... though I will need to rewatch this.
My level of playing and understanding has gone up in such a short amount of time after I started watching your videos. I just can't believe all this information is up on YT for anyone to watch. Thank you so much for making these videos and breaking down these topics to such great detail with the graphic aids as well. What you're doing is invaluable and I try to plug your channel whenever I can.

I'm really feeling as if my knowledge is increasing, thanks Jarred😊...it's amazing what your explanations help...I have a question though...in the example where you have the root on b flat...why does the 5th on 5th string and the 3rd on the 2nd string and not the other way around...might be a stupid question, but what the heck 😊
Thanks!

At the beginning, when you played the vi chord, what did u play before going to the i chord
Great video this explains alot and now with the chords pdf file you have gave I am having fun trying to figure the Key the song is in by looking at the chords progression. As funny as it sounds this video made me realise and understand the lyrics from Hallelujah song "the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift". I just need to pratice more my dexterity. The way you said "it was a game changer" kinda sounds like a commercial where they interview people about the product and how it changed their life
Loving your videos. Feedback and a question: I have been repeating them to get the full understanding and funny enough I have been teaching my mother a lot of the theory that she just didn't understand even after playing for 40+ years. I myself am 41 so I'm learning late but your vids have been incredibly helpful. Thanks so much. As a question, looking at this video and the right hand. It looks like the picking motion on the power chords is basically hitting the first two but then using your "ring" finger or something else to pick the third chord. Is that the case? I'm on an acoustic so my sound is a little different but was thinking that a quick tutorial on how to pick/strum may have been helpful in this particular vid. That's a minor nitpick for sure, I had to watch this video over probably 5 times in the part about the 5 notes up within the original key until it clicked. I think it half way clicked lol. But that's what practice is for. Thanks again!
@soundguitar

thanks for watching, Aaron! Good question. I think you're noticing my hybrid picking where I use a pick and my fingers at the same time. Here's a video where I teach that technique: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f5Vq27utpN2dnKg.html. There's not right way to play the notes of the chord. Once can strum, or pluck with fingers, or hybrid pick, whatever works and sounds good to you. But hopefully that answers your question and helps. Cheers! - Jared
jared rocks!
I'm confused about the chord in the video at 9:32. I think you are playing a b flat but the diagram seems to be showing a b chord 1,5,3. I'm I missing something?
Nice lesson, could you do a video using minor progressions

Thanks, Chris! I really enjoyed providing those examples. I'm going to shoot for providing real music examples more and more whenever talking about theory or abstract topics. :)
It's ironic that you mentioned about being hard and keep plugging at it. Just saw a bio of Glenn Campbell & he said it took him 3 MONTHS to get the riff in Rhinestone Cowboy to the point of no mistakes. So if a protégé can take that long, guess it's ok for us amateurs😎😎😎.
How do we know when to switch strings?
@soundguitar
2 жыл бұрын
You can wait as long as you want. If you can see that the strings are dirty then change them, if it gets harder to keep the guitar in tune then change them, obviously if one breaks then change them (all of them). I keep mine on for a long time before changing them, but I also keep them very clean by wiping them down before and after (and during) playing, which helps. Some people will change their's once a month. some once a year. You'll find your range you like and it will likely change over time.
Hey where is your vid about crossing string chords not just chords along one string? Thanx

That's okay! It does take time and that can even be part of the fun of it. I do understand the overwhelm though - I totally hear you. For now I'd recommend finding one little aspect that you're especially curious about and just chew on that for a bit while ignoring everything else. And during that phase let the feeling of really being puzzled by it be part of it. The enjoyment of the learning is the best part of all of this so if you can find one little win from one little step it can re-spark an enthusiasm and optimism for everything else. Hope that helps some. I know you got this.
