Syrian Christians split into two Catholic faction which owned alligience to Roman Pope while the other group owned alligience to Syrian patriarch with keeping their independent Indian identity. I mean there were so many trade routes in that southern region of India. In ancient times, India had so many trade relations with Jews, Arabs, Syrians, Chinese, Greeks etc. The first Muslim mosque built in India was in Kerala in the 7th century. The first European to discover India, was when he arrived at the shores of Kerala. Portugues Christian missionaries arrived in Kerala and Goa.

They are more "indianised" and are very closer to hindu customs. Even the churches look more like a hindu temple. We can still see similar places in Kerala.

I'm a Indian Hindu, I grew up in Eastern India kolkata, I saw so many European nuns coming to churches nearby every year, They were really sweet and friendly, I was a child, didn't used to speak English then, Though i could understand them by their smile and fond gestures. They used to come to the churches for any reason. I grew up in a orthodox Hindu family, we have a temple in the house its like having a private church in your backyard The wonderful thing was, my parents never asked me to stay away or not to talk with those nuns, they never restricted me from going inside the church with them, I was a child and never really had any love for any Jesus or shiva but I treasured those cookies they used to give from church for free, for whatever reason it was Really beautiful memory I just remembered watching this video. Miss those days and those fond nuns

One thing to keep in mind is the history of why some people are saying "christianity is the white man's religion " although I know it isn't. I as a foundational black American can't ignore the reason many of my back ground believe that . This is not "truth." The first Christians were NOT Arab, they were Levantine, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, and Anatolian. Some of these peoples are "European" while others are mostly West Asian (genetically). Whether or not these people are "brown" depends on who you ask. Ask a northern European, then yes they are "brown." Ask someone from India or Arabia, and most of these people are "white." "Brown people" is a mostly-arbitrary and ridiculously stupid qualification. Many southern Europeans are more "brown" than West Asians, especially before Islam. By the time these people became "Arab" (as in their first language was Arabic), they were no longer Christians.

Sorry, it just bothers me when people claim that pre-Islamic Levantine and Mesopotamian people were Arab. Arabs heavily erased their identities, with a relatively small number of Assyrians/Chaldeans, Mandeans, Arameans, Copts, Maronite/Phoenicians, and Samaritans left. Then, of course, there's the Jews, but that's a different discussion because Jews moved around so much. Whenever people say "Jesus was an Arab," I get it that they're saying he wasn't European (which is of course true), but what they're saying is blatantly false. He was an Aramaic-speaking Jew (as in genetically/ethnically Levantine). He had almost nothing to do with the people of Arabia, who took over the region 600 years later, mixed with the existing population, and imposed their language/religion on the locals.

The language spoken in the state of Kerala is called "Malayalam". A person who talks Malayalam as a mother tongue is called a "Malayalee". Dont get it mixed up. Love the video.

Most of the pictures displayed in this vedio are not the photos of Syrian Christians in Kerala. Some are pictures of North Indians and Tamilians.

I am a a Syro Indian Christian from India, my ancestors used to speak Aramaic, later we lost the language and we are using the local language now.

The only thing missionaries did was convert some people in Goa and other parts of North India. They didn't need to convert christians in south as they were already there since 1st century.What the missionaries did do was make those churches self governing Catholic Churches. However,the traditions did not fade...

Aryan Dravidian thing is actually accepted in South.. The south is kept down by the dominant north (although south contribute more to GDP). Most ministers are from North. Malayalam and Tamil are to Dravidian languages and they were not derived from sanskrit. Actually sanskrit is a non Indian language. I am Assyrian/Syriac. You're missing some info that the st. Thomas Christians of Kerala adhere to the Church of the East which originates from Northern Iraq (Assyria) rather than the Levant. Church of the East employs Syriac (medieval dialect of Mesopotamian Aramaic) as the liturgical language.

I can explain it short for you since I am Aramean. Assyrians and Chaldeans are the same people. They split cause of the churches. Arameans are a different ethnicity which got conquered by the Assyrian empire way back. So Arameans and Assyrians started mixing.

People confuse it with "Shah" surname used by Persians where it means ruler or King. He's from Jain family but accepted Hinduism. There's nothing stopping a Jain from worshipping Hindu gods or vice versa however on paper they are separate faiths.

Kikuyu Kiiru That's if you're using the broad "racial" categories of Black, white, east Asian, etc. I'm using it in the same way Masaman does, to refer to more narrow populations, i.e. ethnic groups. Most White Americans are entirely white, sure, but they tend to be a mix of European ethnic groups. White Europeans, meanwhile, tend to have a little admixture from each of their neighbors, as do most African and Asian populations.

My Grandmothers family originated from Southern India and my Grandmother kept Saturday Sabbath as the original St. Thomas Christians did. I just watched a song and dance handed down allegedly from the time of St.Thomas. God Bless the Nasrani or Nazariens.

Yes but syrian Christians and mapilla Muslims of kerala where previosly brahmins(Aryans) who where mixed mith arabs/syrians/Jews. You can check history. That's why most kerala people look fairer than many North Indian states people.

Great.. But please update your video with actual images of kerala syrian christians.Only few are syrian christians in this video.

Many of these Kerala Christians (and some Hindus) moved to the Fort Worth/Dallas area, and I became acquainted with them at the Boeing plant in Irving. Their surnames were commonly adapted to the English variant (Thomas, Abraham, James, etc.), not uncommon for any immigrant group. Some in Kerala still "practice caste" among themselves. They refer to the Nestorian church they are associated with as "The Church of the East"; not sure if it is the same as the Mar Toma Syrian Church. The appearance of them and others from Kerala seems quite different from other Dravidians, probably from the thousands of years of contact with the Middle East. Some have claimed that the words for ivory, apes, and peacocks in the Biblical passage about Ophir are the same in Hebrew and Malayalam, but has that been verified? Apparently, the ancient traders used seasonal winds when sailing between Kerala and he Middle East.

Brown Punjabi ,Punjabi may be indo Aryan language..but here the context was Bangladeshi anthropological differences...as you can see..east of Bangladesh is Mizoram,Tripura,nagaland,meghalaya etc..which is tibetoburman ..so naturally there will be some mixing of indo Aryans and tibeto burmans in Bangladesh..that's why there is some variation in appearance of people..also language group and people may be different in some areas...eg...in turkey..language is Turkish..but people are not that Turkic..they mainly resemble Greek and eastern Europeans..

Aryan Dravidian thing is actually accepted in South.. The south is kept down by the dominant north (although south contribute more to GDP). Most ministers are from North. Malayalam and Tamil are to Dravidian languages and they were not derived from sanskrit. Actually sanskrit is a non Indian language. Because of christian influence state of kerala has the highest literacy (many schools and colleges owned by church) Then North indians look down on christians and say they were converted by missionaries.. But nasranis were bramins and changed to christianity before 2000 years , while most north indians are migrants form Afghanistan and north east Asia.

And these are non-forceful conversions.

I'm a Syro-Malabar Catholic and the history roughly goes like this: St.Thomas came to Kerala by sea in A.D 52 and established the "7 and a half churches". The Church came in contact with East Syriac bishops and adopted the East Syriac liturgy. The Portuguese, visited India, colonized Goa and tried to bring the Church to Catholic Church and still retaining the liturgy which was opposed by the minority and the Church was split for the first time at Coonan Cross Oath in 1653. The majority 'Pazhayakoor' went on to make communion with the catholic church and the other side 'Puthenkoor' went to be with the Church of the East and that faction, after 10 years adopted West Syriac liturgy and went on to become the Malankara churches. The Pazhayakoor faction is still in communion with the Catholic church (The sui iuri church called Syro-Malabar Catholic Church) but a small group in the city of Thrissur went back to the Church of the East(Assyrian Church). Currently, Malankara churches use the West Syriac liturgy while Syro-Malabar Church and the Assyrian church(Church of the East) use East Syriac liturgy.

I'm a Nasrani. My dad's family belongs to the earlier christian group and Moms family to the group that came from Assyria in 900AD. :)

My mother's gynecologist in Montreal is a Christian from Kerala. And thanks for mentioning the Cochin Jews rather extensively!!!! Those, plus other Jews in India, haven't experienced anti-Semitism to nearly the same extent as their coreligionists in Christian Europe and in Muslim countries.

Don't know if this has been pointed out but Malayalam is the name of the language. Malayali refers to the people. Mallu is a slang term also referring to the people. Also Tamil is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable. Other than that, great video as always!

AFAIK Indian languages, both Dravidian and Indo-Aryan, are not stress-based languages.

In Old Malayalam, we find words such as Irunnu, Vannu etc and the similar use of the consonant 'Nja' as in Modern Malayalam. Proto-Malayalam is indeed the right word and NOT Tamil as known by all linguists.

Even islam came to India through south India. A Kerala king travelled to arabia and visited Prophet Muhammad himself and assured him he built a mosque in his country,but he did not convert.Islam spread in a peaceful manner in south india unlike north india or Pakistan.

@@MrLikea8055 No , in the past Majority of the christian churches are built by the land given by hindu kings, at that time Kerala was a collection of small kingdoms, so kings tried to increase trade by welcoming us to their kingdoms by giving us extra rights. kerala syrian christians are a migratory people like jews who frequently moved for trade and economic oppertunities.

Bürger comes from old german "Burgari" which morphed into "Burgverteidiger" which means " defender of the castle " . Burg still means castle in modern German.

Curious to know ur sources for this video? There is rarely any evidence of Anglo-Indian and Syrian Christian marriages, with the exception of Anglo-Indian women marrying Nasrani men( Nasranis are a patrineal meaning our caste or ethnicity comes from our father). And even with these cases of women marrying into the community these cases were low.

If only I was born as a burger..

You can do a DNA test to determine your genetic ancestors. This does not determine the language you speak, the religion you may follow or the food you eat. But you may be surprised to find out who who are related to due to a common ancestor.
