Do "Smart Drugs" Work?

What if you could unlock your brain’s potential with just a pill? It sounds like something out of Limitless, but there’s a whole culture around nootropics, or “smart drugs”. But do any of them work? Are any nootropics supported by scientific evidence? I decided to try five highly popular nootropics and did the research to see if they’re real.
*FYI, we did not receive any compensation from any of the companies shown in this video. Just wanted to see whether they work or not!*

    Just to lay this out there, taking the nootropics was not intended to be scientific in any way. Just one person taking these nootropics for just one day is terrible methodology and I began researching this topic before taking the nootropics, so bias was present. But I wanted to try them and thought you’d enjoy it too! Trust the science, not me!

    As someone with attention problems, I've resorted to many different ways to try and get work done. Strangely enough I've found one of the most effective ways was...no sleep. 30 hours awake, 10 hours asleep. Used to run that a lot during uni. first 12 hours had the usual distractions issues. then 8 hours of fighting tiredness wanting to sleep. Then 10 blissful hours of feeling awake and focussed, if a little strained. Really the closest feeling to the actual nootropics I've taken, concerta, but with those pills there's no strain in the background, and memory is significantly improved. Above 30 hours gets damaging, with skin repair and digestion etc affected, above 50 hours hallucinations start, and above 80 simple subconscious functions like weight balancing while walking start to fail. 30 hour days (or 40 if you count nights) were manageable, basically sleeping every other day, but long term memory was severely affected after a few months. Not something I'd recommend... Caffeine provides energy, but not focus for me, same as energy drinks. But then I suppose instead of trying to enhance my brain, I'm trying to suppress thoughts and urges that stop me working, so the opposite of most people using Nootropics?

    I drink a lot of black tea. I've heard it has as much caffeine as coffee, but I'm not sure. I also feel like it's a needed pick-me-up if I'm sleepy or tired, but I too wonder if it's just the ritual and familiarity of the drink. I don't drink green tea because it's easier to make it taste bad if not prepared correctly compared to black tea. I might try to switch to green tea for the evenings.

  • @neurotransmissions

    @neurotransmissions

    5 жыл бұрын

    Tea leaves do have more caffeine than coffee beans, but the concentration is much higher in a cup of coffee than in black tea. As a result, a cup of coffee has about double as much caffeine compared to a cup of black tea. But yeah it's so soothing to have a nice hot beverage. It's been raining a lot here recently, so we've been drinking a lot of (non-caffeinated) tea in the evening. It's nice! Agree about green tea tasting bad if not properly steeped though.

    I used some kind of brain booster supplement when I was younger. It was a free trial and I thought it could be helpful ? I forget the name but I believe it was for improving focus and concentration as well as decreasing the chances of developing dementia. I took it for two days and on the second day I expected one of the worst headaches I’ve ever had. I don’t usually get headaches and there was a warning for this so it must have definitely been the supplement.

    When taking creatine you don't notice a difference in energy just that your muscles can work a little longer with out being in as much pain because of water retention that expands the muscles in question in your case biking your legs probly didn't feel like you did alot of work even though you probably bike a mile or more considering you look pretty fit. There is no real Neuro response from creatine as far as I've studied. There some suggestions that your extra water intake is very good for the body. Since most people don't drink enough water daily.

    In the Nicotine gum, I think it should have been tested on a smoker, as well as the non-smoker (Micah), to compare the effects E.g. does the gum feel like smoking? If so, does have the same negative effects? If not, how does it influence the brain compared to smoking?

  • @neurotransmissions

    @neurotransmissions

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm, good question. Smoking would definitely hit the brain faster because nicotine would enter the bloodstream faster. It would probably have the same effects but would feel slightly different (e.g. "waves" of nicotine stimulation vs. a ramp up and down). Smoking would have more negative effects in general, just because you're introducing smoke particulates that affect the lungs and can cause lung irritation, bad breath, and...ya know...cancer in the long-term.

At night when I'm trying to sleep, for sure, this sounds nice. This is the clearest explanation of l-theanine I've seen yet, but I'm still wondering how "neurons fire less" = good in contexts other than sleep. At any rate, I can't handle the caffeine in green tea, so it's pills or nothing for me. XD

Since that ruling, there have been a lot of hearings regarding this and it looks like they're going to provide an exemption for coffee before it ever goes into effect. This was based on recent studies which found no evidence that coffee increases cancer risk and, in fact, some research has even shown that two cups a day may reduce the risk of certain cancers. Even the FDA commissioner supported its exemption and the World Health Organization removed coffee from its list of carcinogens a few years ago. Honestly, there's just not enough evidence to definitively say whether coffee causes or prevents cancer. But for now, Californians won't be seeing warnings on their Starbucks coffee cups.

    @@neurotransmissions Oh I see. So, from what I read and understand, acrylamide is carcinogenic and found in roasted coffee but coffee also contains antioxidants and carcinostatic compounds that lower the overall risk of cancer?

    I have tried around 40 different nootropics and nothing had an effect on me. Coffee and theanine are a joke too I feel no effect. I'm also not interested in nootropics that make me sleep (wtf?), or in cognitive improvements, because that is not going to happen. What I care about is less anxiety, more energy and better libido. I screwed my test up with cistanche because I only took 200 mg. But Taking 600 mg Cistanche tubulosa and eating 3 eggs may make you feel better for around 30 mins. Afaik it improves cholesterol transport.

    My whole life I have looked to how to improve my cognitive function. Thank you so much for this video! Request: can you do an episode of things you can do to enhance cognitive function? As well as what to avoid. I will take brain pills but they don't seem to help that much. I do it more for the placebo effect and confidence. Fish oil (Omega-3s) and a multivitamin seems to be the best enhancement I have taken.

    Shilajit is a nootropic substance I think you guys should look into. Its a sticky tar-like putty from the Altai and Himalayan mountain comprised of compressed minerals and plant matter over many years. It has the highest levels of humec and fulvic acids known in nature, which has been shown to aid in nutrient absorption. Multiple peer reviewed studies show that it can help balance hormone regulation especially testosterone in men. In an animal study it showed less brain adema after brain damage was inflicted, as well as limiting cancer pathways in ovarian cancer studies in women. Look into it and make another nootropic video! 😄

    Coffee.. You're doing it right. Coffee should taste like coffee... not a bunch of added sugar and creamer. On the nicotine note. The problem with it, is that once you're used to it. It's just normal. You don't get a real boost. You just function. Then without, for about 3-5 weeks you'll be absolutely miserable, irritable, potentially sick, anxious. My withdrawls were bad enough when I quit I ended up hospitalized over it. so yeah. Not really worth it.

    Why do all Noootropic youtubers take videos infront a book shelf? Is it to make you seem smarter than you are? Did you even read those books? This whole industry seems like a fucking scam tbh, including the people doing the reviews

    This video speaks to neurotypical people ONLY. As usual neurodivergent people are very different, and not taken into account. We may currently be counted as a minority, but that may change as more adults and doctors become aware. I do believe that "hyper-focus" is something that only we are truly capable of. > Pam

    Of course you wont see the point of nootropics. Trying some ginko , creatine and l-theanine once (which btw i dont even consider as nootropics) and reading some online articles wont make you an expert who can gives advices on the topic. For anyone watching this video and trying to improve his life and mental performance, i would like to say: keep searching. There are lots of good informations and youtubers out there knowledgeable about the subject. Nootropics were a real life savior to me. You have no idea how dramatically it can improve your life. Dont be discourage and mislead by this video.
