I have heard it said that Quaker parrots turn into monsters when they become hormonal.
Is that true?
Is that true of other species?
Are parrots misunderstood or do parrots, and quaker parrots, make bad pets?

Hormones can effect any parrot. I think we as their custodians have to be aware of things like not touching and scratching anywhere except the head. And we have to watch the body and eye language. Sometimes they are giving a sign telling us to back away. I also think any young parrot can go though the testing the beak stage. We have to be patient and teach them what is acceptable. ❤

I'm working on the biting with my quaker it takes time and effort. While it's very hard not to react you need to try so hard not to make a drama or a lot of noise about a bite. Birds love drama while a puppy learns not to bite hard by yelping or a loud ouch a reaction like this will encourage a bird to bite. I totally ignore the biting hard as it is and have started target training him to touch my finger with his beak to touch command. When I see him looking as if he's going to bite I can 90 percent redirect by asking him to touch instead bites are ignored he gets set down (not in his cage as this can be rewarding the bite as they are so cage territorial) and I leave the room without speaking to him. If he redirects and touchs when presented with finger I give him loud praise and treats. Some days though I can just tell he's not in the mood, too over stimulated, too hormonal and I respect that back off on physical contact and do other activities like treat foraging, foraging toys, letting him shower, giving him popsticle sticks to build and toys to amuse him I rarely get bitten but I do still get the ocassional bite and they hurt. Living with a parrot is living with a small toddler with scissors for hands. My boy can rival any two year old with his tantrums.

How awesome! I think a lot of it is more in the time that is spent with a quaker, and how they are raised. Being so communal, I think they require more time than most parrots. I'm so happy you have a few quakers now. I've had a quaker and a parakeet for a little over 2 years now. Im not experienced with parrots.. My quaker (memphis) is so loving, but also at the same time sassy, and has an all out attitude..and loud 😯... since you have so much experience with all the different species, maybe you can help me with this.. when Memphis and millie (the parakeet, and both females btw..) are out side their cages, which is most of the day, they are fine..they play etc. But I've had a few occasions when (and she's really small, even for a parakeet) millie is in her cage, and Memphis (the quaker) is out, Memphis will bite at millie. She's pulled at her tail feathers, and a few times her toes, even having them bleed.ki feel like millies a battered wife, and just loves Memphis and forgives her immediately. .the other day she actually bit down hard on millies beak. What I don't understand (is it some kind of reverse cage aggression? ) is why this only happens when millie is in her cage and Memphis out..Memphis has her own huge cage full of toys etc so I don't think she's jealous of millies cage...sorry this is soooooo long..its difficult now to orchestrate them both being in or out of their respective cages both at the same time.

I had a cockatiel (male) who would get hormonal at different times of the year for no obvious reason and would aggressively guard all the tea towels in the house. Even though he was bonded to me and was usually very sweet and interactive, picking up a tea towel would send him into attack mode where he'd fly around the head of whoever was holding the towel and try to bite them, screaming all the while. Put the tea towel down and he went right back to being happy, chatty and calm. Folding the washing or doing the dishes meant cage time for him.

He'd even 'feed' them from time to time, regurgitating seed (but only seed; not veggies, pellets or grass) on them and preening them if he found one on the bench. As far as he was concerned, he owned all the tea-towels. That's the thing about rescue animals.... you never really know why they do some of the things they do.

We were fostering 2 other amazons and as soon as they came into the house our Amazon (Paco) was like don't anyone touch me I have my friends!! We also have 2 Eclectus and a Green Cheek Conure. So my question is regarding the Quaker noise level. I know they can be loud, but I am curious, do you find their sound to be a shrill as the Conure. Our conure isn't particularly loud but the tone of his call goes right through me. I am looking to add another "medium" size bird but I don't want to add another one that has the same tone as the Conure. Bad side; 1. Year 1; perfect bird, year 2 hormones kicked in; the biting and screaming started 2. Every spring = turns into a demon for a bit 3. Overall the contact calling is worse part; louder than my gray and macaw by far. I am still in the research phase of learning about birds and which species I may want to get. I have been watching hundreds of videos and getting as much informed (and uninformed, lol) information as possible. I have heard a lot of talk from multiple bird people about birds getting hormonal and becoming tough to handle, at least for a while, and sometimes long term. I was just wondering if there is any sort of medication or medical procedure that works when dealing with a long term change in a birds behavior, and that behavior becoming too bitey or too aggressive? As someone that has some dog training experience, it is usually recommended in cases like that to make sure that the dog is"fixed", especially in males when there is aggressive behavior. I've been told birds don't do well with anesthesia and surgery, etc., and that seems to be far too much to correct behavior. I was just wondering how it was usually handled in this e severe cases. Medication seems like a possible option but I may be completely wrong about that.?.?

The owners said he was good with their dog. I can't even go into his cage without or with wearing gloves and he gets really aggressive and bites me even through my gloves. Sorry to hear it. It sounds to me like he had a difficult experience in his previous home. If you can let him be and just enjoy what he offers and/or get him another Lorikeet, it will get better. A bird like that can be hard, especially if they bite. However, if you can weather the storm, you would find that you would both do some emotional healing. Birds have that effect, as do most animals (maybe all animals) when we go through the fire with them.

We actually did have our Pionus and our Amazon go through stages of being just one or two person birds. When our Amazon was younger everyone enjoyed him. Several months ago he became mostly a 2 person bird because everyone else in the family were afraid to hold him - especially without our help. He'd gotten hard for them to handle because he was nippy - probably partly the bluffing stage and partly he'd get over excited. It was also in spring, so hormones were probably involved, too. Luckily the last few months he's been growing out of his ultra feisty, bitey stage and they've all started holding him more again and are all pretty comfortable with him again. But our Amazon is very gregarious and LOVES to go visit each person in the family. (Especially his favorites or anyone making interesting sounds/doing interesting things. ) Our Pionus likewise started out with everyone enjoying holding him. When he was young he always beaked very gently so no one was afraid to hold him. He went through an anxious/ aggressive and bitey stage where if people tried to touch him or have him step up when he was fluffed in warning he would beak them hard. I was the main person spending time with him regularly, but he started distrusting everyone else. My son spent a few days with him and started making sure to spend time with him daily and that brought him back into our Pi's good graces. so he's been a pretty solid 2 person bird since then. Our pionus had been reluctant to take treats from us when he was young which had made training and behavior modification more difficult. What turned that around is I tried giving him millet while holding the stalk and he ate some! He wasn't as nervous about eating it since it has the long stem. Later I put a few tiny pieces of walnut in his chop bowl and now he loves and will take nuts from us. Being able to give him treats has been so helpful! Lately I've been working on getting our Pionus to trust everyone else in the family more and to go to everyone (he had still been acting aggressive toward everyone except me and my son). To do this I have a person give him a few small pieces of nuts (one as a time). If he is relaxed enough after getting the nut bit(s) I have them try having him step up to get his nut piece. He's getting very willing to do this with everyone, especially since he knows he can come right back to me. Baby steps! It's been really helpful! He's starting to like and trust everyone more and he's less likely to take aggressive posture 😁 But we're still working on it with everyone. I wonder if there's anything u can do to help your daughter and other people in your family win over Lorenza? Does Lorenza do targeting at all? We've also had people do a little target training sometimes with our birds. The birds like that the person isn't as in their space and they understand the game. They know they get treats when they touch the stick so they're willing to do it with other people. That also builds trust and interest in those people. Maybe your daughter/ other people could also be the ones to give Lorenza her chop and sit near her without u being nearby every day for a while. If she likes beet or carrot chips maybe they could give her those? I tried beet chips after Tony mentioned them and our parrots like them :) Idk if it's possible at this age for Lorenza to learn to like more people, but maybe :) Glad ours are being friendlier to everyone again :) If Lorenza tries to bite other people that give her treats they could either put a treat a little ways away from her where she has to walk over to get it or they could use a wooden spoon to deliver the treats :) Good luck if u decide to try some things with Lorenza to help her like other people in your family more!

I have owned budgies and I suck at owning them. Because birds aren't domesticated, it's difficult to get them😅 tame.

Budgies are wonderful, but they are not as easy to bond with as some other species, like Cockatiels or even Parrotlets. GCC bond even more so.

They are hormonal monsters lol. I really miss mine but all she wanted was a mate. I should of read more on quakers. I had other birds and she was one of a kind lol No more birds for me. She was a plucker too so stressfull. My quaker was very needy. you really want to get to together so they wont get lonely. They should not sell theses types of parrots in the store.

I have a Quaker and he is super sweet and loving but only towards me. He is social with my family members and takes food from them. Will fly to them and land on their head/shoulder but will not tolerate any head scratches or pets from anyone but me. He does show aggression towards my fiancée but it’s inconsistent so I think his hormones are to blame when he gets aggressive towards his “competition” 😂.

My quaker parrot wow how can I explain her she bonded to me within four days but she’s obsessed and think she owes me she’s demanding and wants all of my time she loves my husband too but she sees me more like a maid I think she calls me mommy and says thousands of words and phrases which is hard to discipline and she sounds like a cute little girl my husband‘s in love with her and think she does no wrong! she bites me when I don’t look at her and give her white 100% attention if I’m even talking to my husband she will get jealous now she is only two so I think that it’s just her first hormonal. Season she shakes with anxiety wanted to see me and then of course if she’s happy and too excited they bite, She says so many words and phrases and an exactly the right time it’s like there’s a little human in there for two-year-old temper tantrum human
