Do Pet Steps Really Work? Final Solution. **Part 2**

Folding Dog Steps are great to get your older or injured dog into a vehicle but they don’t work for all dogs. This video shows how to train your pet and get them conditioned to use the steps. It also shows the challenge involved with the training and in some cases the heartbreak.
Tips include using supplements such as #Cosequin with #Glucosamine and Chondroitin along with Fish Oil to help with inflammation and chronic #arthritis.

Just finished a 6K mile trip using these steps for Cosmo and it was amazing. He got more confident day by day. Without these steps the whole trip would not be possible.

Great video. Was perfect that Cosmos didn’t hesitate to use the steps. I had looked at these before but couldn’t remember which brand. My dogs never like the ramps. Happy camping and hugs and kisses to all the babies.

Great video. For what it’s worth, I’ve found a bath mat is great for leveling our ramp (still works for our younger dogs) and providing a bit more stability/grip to the vehicle.

Excellent video. Thank you. Ramp doesn't work for us either. But I have a slightly different problem. Like another commenter, my 10 year old GSD needs to go to the groomer but most importantly, the VET. I'm getting desperate. The issue I am having is that I need to get him IN AND OUT of the back hatch of a Honda CRV which is SO WIDE. I purchased the large size but I when try the stairs, he views it as an OBSTACLE in the middle, so he goes around it and tries to [unsuccessfully] claw himself up into the hatch from either side of the stairs! I've tried blocking off both sides with high pillows on either side to give him 'the visual idea' but no amount of coaxing with treats, with leash and without leash, leading by the collar, WORKS. I used to hoist him in the rest of the way myself but had spine surgery and cannot do it now. Also, the very last the time got him in [before surgery] it was extremely difficult to get him OUT of the car once I arrived at the appointment, and then again when I got home. Is there anyone out there that has any suggestions??? I really don't know what to do at this point.

All I can add is to make sure he is familiar with the steps, such as what you saw in the video to start in the house on something very low. If the steps are unstable that will frighten him also. Can you have other people stand on either side of the steps to block the extra space then lead him up? I know with my experience my tone of voice even makes a difference, I have to sound happy and exciting and not being authoritative. or harsh. Wish you the best of luck.

Have had the same problems using a ramp with my 80lb Retriever/Shepherd. He's 10 and and has joint problems in his rear legs. I can't get him to the vet because I can't get him into my truck. I have had zero luck getting him to use a ramp even after taking a lot more time than you did trying to get him to use it. After seeing the luck you had with Cosmo and the stairs, I'm going to give that try.

It is worth a try and hopefully you can get him to the vet for evaluation and some medications. As I stated in the video, we started with the anti inflammatory and steroid meds then was able to transition to the Cosequin. Good luck.

Thank you for these videos. I'm going to get the steps for my 82lb rescue girl that is scared of loading. I'll take the steps (punny!) to desensitize her to climbing on on all sorts of stuff before we attempt the car. Side note: please investigate the herb Boswellia for Cosmo. It's a natural anti inflammatory and helped my senior girl with her bad legs. (To the point of we were off of Gabapentin and Tramadol)

Oh my - I've been looking for a solution for my 11 year old dogs and found your channel. Thank you so much. I will absolutely by the steps but I'm wondering what you have as the platform covering the rear seats in the back that gives an extended seat coverage. Do you have a video on that as well? Great video, especially with cosequine and fish oil recommendations. Bless you

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. The back seat in my 2016 RAM lifts up then a platform comes out to make the flat area you see. It is all standard in my truck. The steps are great for us and hope for you as well. Thanks for watching and happy travels.

When guiding Cosmo up and down either the steps or ramp, using the leash makes it awkward for them. When you use the leash it's a left or right tug, and not a guiding motion. [Like driving with a real bad front end] Just grab their collar and guide them up and down like luggage.

Great video, I was about to buy a ramp for our aging dog before seeing this. He's turning 12 and has hip dysplasia. For what it's worth, we've got him on dasuquin and a few other meds, but CBD oil has been a night and day difference for him!!

I have a friend who makes the oil herself, I just have to stop by the dispensary and pick up an ounce of flower for her. I choose a strain that’s high in CBD and very low in THC. I’ve been told that having just a little THC does something to “enable” the CBD more than without it, but obviously not enough to get my dog high. Anecdotally, I have given him the pure CBD oil you can buy from Winco, pet stores etc. and it helps a little but doesn’t have the same “night and day” effect on him. Of course, no idea what the legality of cannabis is in your state.

My dogs love these two supplements and come running when I shake the bottles. No flavor in the Cosequin but the bottle does say "tasty." The fish oil is 1200mg but I just get whatever is available at a good price. I put links in the video description for the products. Thank you for this comment and good luck with your pets.

What you didn't allow for here in evaluating your training's efficacy is to what extent Cosmo **wanted** to be in the rig rather than back on the ground...and going back on the ground not only was more dangerous looking down at where he could fall, it was not where wanted to be and he certainly didn't want to leave the inside of the rig which, no doubt, correlates in his mind with **wheee, going with dad*** stuff. He's a sweet old boy, so tolerant of the mere 'humans' that you (and we all) are...good ol' friend-boy! Would like to know, maybe I missed it, the weight capacity of the stairs... and ur stairs were still a little unbalanced, tilting to the viewers' right just a bit...better to have that VERY slight tilt go towards the car door so the dog, when it's doing the most dangerous-seeming act of descending, feels stabilized on one side and would move with more confidence. They WANT to jump bcuz it is, in their world and the angle at which they live, more seemingly safe to jump than it is to navigate those crunched up stairs. Would've like to know weight of dog and rating of ramp or maybe I missed that. THX for your efforts... as you attempt behavioral modifications with your sweet, 4-legged, BFF, can you see if you can quiet yourself completely and send your senses into your dog ... imagine you perceive sound, smell,... just as he experiences it and you were just kind of along for the ride. Just deeply relax and see to what extent you can kinesthetically **feel** your dog, the slightest movement or sensory perception... be him (so to speak) and create that level of a bond... if so, it will grow to enormous extents in all your inter-species interactions. THX FOR THIS.
