I did not expect to like this album as much as I did, it manages to mix really lively and funky beats with strong messaging and themes about non-heterosexuality and standard gender while not shying away from the more dirty, the more uncleanly, the more sexual aspects of such unapologetically and cleverly. There were a couple of common Samuel Ls here, mostly in the singles, but otherwise this is a strong directional turn for them and I hope they keep this up. It's always nice to see an artist pull a Bruno Mars!

Unholy and Gloria coming out before gave me a total wrong impression that this whole album would be related to religion/church-adjacent themes in some way and be heavily choral like the title track (which is the sort of thing I like and so interested me when I wouldn’t otherwise bother with Sam's stuff) but it is what it is.

I always had mixed feelings about Sam smith I never loved them or hated them, However I enjoyed this project way more than I expected huge props to them

I am glad he liked it a bit and didn't just rip it apart, I don't why but I have a soft spot for Sam smith's music they are incredible

i honestly like it. i feel the pride in it and it gets pretty touching at some points, i love the house track because of the ties with the queer community, like i said - pretty touching. better than i expected

i agree that unholy feels de-personalized in the context of the album and it's silly, but I really like the -sound- of the song and as a pop single I don't get why so many people hate it??? that said I actually think I could take or leave Kim Petras' part in it. also, while Sam Smith has had a ... boring problem (lol) throughout their career I think the negative reception of them recently has been very much influenced by transphobia, homophobia and also fatphobia tbh. Like I see the reactions to some of their outfits and I feel like people are just happy that they can laugh at a bigger person who dresses flamboyantly but have the excuse that they think the outfits are bad, or that Sam smith is pandering, or whatever else.

Todd said that unholy is possibly about a gay priest getting off to a married man giving a confession about cheating on their partner with a trans woman, which actually makes sense

Todd was saying that's what the song SHOULD be about, not that that's what's actually going on. Idk if that was supposed to be the implication but the lyrics themselves are toothless. It sucks because I love the sound of the song, but repeated listens just really highlights how hollow the it is. The Dxrk remix goes crazy tho

I'm glad Sam is staying true to themselves, and even though I don't go back much to their recent projects, there are songs here and there that stick out to me, so I'll be giving this album a go myself. The album I revisit the most is The Thrill of It All, as it really is a standout to me in terms of musical and vocal performance, charged with a lot of emotion.

The thing that annoys me so much about the Unholy censor is that it's SOO LOOOONG. Like come on Smith, you could have made it "bout all the _Ding_ *that* you tell me that you do" or something at least to not completely remove the flow of the song for a whole beat and a half. That xylophone gets on my nerves every time. Just say it Sam we know what you're saying, commit to the whole 'new you' sound don't cop out with a fake out swear as out of place as that. I've been following them since 2014, so I'm fairly attached to their music. I was a bit disappointed that some of the songs didn't hit me AS MUCH as I hoped it would, but I'm hopeful my mind can change with upcoming listens (I'm not here to make friends is, so far, a stand-out) Also, the album cover is really pretty

I've seen some really hateful reviews on it, but I think the first run of 8 tracks is great. Overall solid album

I don't get how Unholy is empowering? Isn't daddy cheating? Okay. I mean it's catchy but I don't see empowering, especially in a Body Shop lmao

There was a part of me with this album, while there is stuff I really like on there, it feels like the queerness of the album is sanded down. The best songs of the album being right at the end and also being the most open tracks on the album, it feels like they're holding back to some extent. At the same time regardless I appreciate what Sam Smith is doing as an openly nonbinary, successful pop artist and the fact they are actually experimenting.

Shocked 'I'm Not Here To Make Friends' wasn't the lead/first single for this album, as it's a better listen than Unholy and Gimme.

I think it's pretty good. Not groundbreaking, but I can vibe to the majority of the songs. I've always had a soft spot for Sam Smith, even with some of the lower tempo songs. This is coming from someone who live soul music.

Never thought I would see an album where the singles are crap, but the deep cuts are decent and even good.

I know it'll obviously never happen (probably) but I would honestly LOVE to hear Sam just absolutely *lose their MIND* on a track. I think playing their style into something angry/intense would create something super unique and genuinely stunning if played correctly.

This was a really nice review of the album! I agreed with pretty much everything you said and I’m glad you were so positive and open-minded while listening!

Sam Smith looks like the weirdest most unappealing baby on the cover of this album… it’s giving “uncanny baby”. Also unholy is a super boring song, and musicians like Sam Smith and Charlie Puth are proof that you can have perfect pitch, you can have almost total mastery of your instrument, and still wind up a boring mess at best or an exasperating careerist with no creative depth at worst. But then again I’m the kind of music fan who thinks it’s appropriate to drink my morning coffee to an album like “Murder Ballads”, so maybe the person who finds listening to “Stagger Lee” first thing in the morning an absolute delight isn’t the best source of opinions on the matter. I’ll be generous however and offer that people who, like myself, don’t exactly admire lots in modern pop music and have no dog in this fight maybe just sometimes aren’t the fairest with our opinions, and this in fact could be a better album than I’m willing to wager credit for. There were a few easy to listen to songs here, the one with Calvin Harris kind of had an almost nice sort of Jamiroquai vibe to it, so maybe I’m just being a little too hard on everyone’s current favorite sexy baby. Who knows. In any case, nice work Brad.

Unholy is such a weird song. While I do respect its intentions, and the fact that it got a non-binary person and a trans person a #1 hit is a gigantic W, Unholy exists in this weird middle ground, where it's somehow both too weird and not weird enough. Add on top of that some of the weirdest lyrics of 2022, and Sam Smith not fitting this style at all, and you have one of the most surreal hits of 2022. It's essentially the Don't Worry Darling of songs: I respect its ambition, and you can see the inkling of something good inside it, but for the most part it just falls flat on its face in terms of the execution. Also, The One, shut up. Unholy is a song that exists. Deal with it.

personally it's because i like my upbeat music to be energetic, dirty and grounded, and my downbeat music to be more floaty and ethereal. to me house has always been a weird mix of the two, cloudy but also grounded with the constant beats going on, upbeat but disconnected from the moment. then again i guess it's just not my thing lol
