Do NOT Buy this Bike: Yamaha MT09 SP vs KTM Duke 890R

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Comparing the Yamaha MT09 with the KTM Duke 890R. The KTM Duke 890R is clearly the best parallel twin that money can buy. The Yamaha MT09 is a triple motor with stiff competition from the likes of the Street Triple from Triumph.
Let's have a quick look at the full specifications of the Yamaha MT09 SP and the Duke 890 R.
The Duke 890R comes with an 889cc liquid cooled parallel twin engine with 4 valves per cylinder producing 119 Bhp at 9200Rpm and 99Nm of torque or 73 lbft at 7000Rpm. It does a top speed of 250+kmph or 156mph.
The MT09 SP comes with an 890cc liquid cooled triple cylinder engine also with 4 valves per cylinder producing 117 bhp at 10000rpm. That extra cylinder makes it a higher revving engine. And 93Nm or 69 lbft of torque also at 7000 rpm. The MT09 SP does a top speed of 260+kmph or 162mph.
The Duke is slightly lighter at 188 kilos or 413 lbs wet and the MT09 being 190 kilos or 419 lbs.

    As an mt09 owner, it's an amazing machine. I've owned gsxs1000f, cb1000r, tuono v4 1100 factory and s1000xr. I've not thought I need more power on the mt. It pulls from any revs and goes like a rocket. Over 100mph is only when the bigger bikes had more, but how often do we really rode at those speeds.

As pointed out it does have a 6 axis IMU. $800 is a small price to pay for the Tech pack, when you consider the Akro and flash is $2500 🤣

    Great comparison! I chose the 890R after riding both. The KTM's power is superior to the Yamaha's due to the strong mid range. The Yamaha was odd; strong low end and strong top end, but weak mid range where lot's of riding is done.

  • @KrishnenduKes

    @KrishnenduKes

    Жыл бұрын

    Interesting observation. I would not say the MT09 has a "weak" mid range. Rather, it is non linear. But it is true that the KTM packs a punch in terms of torque delivery.

  • @paulhope3401

    @paulhope3401

    Жыл бұрын

    Yep, the mt09 has a flat area in the mid range... and also uses only aprox 80% throttle in the last 2-3 gears, its also choked a lot to pass Euro5 regs. Put a full exhaust system, DNA intake and remap it and it will gain about 10bhp, the flat spot will disappear.. as will the speed limiter... and it will be capable of 160mph.. but that speed won't be much fun.😂

  • @ligma9260

    @ligma9260

    From what I understand it’s because Yamaha neutered the mid range on the mt-09. Because of euro 5. Granted the ktm might be the same way… but there’s a few videos out there of people flashing the Yamahas ecu and showing how even at wide open throttle the bike isn’t actually giving you 100%

    As an owners of the KTM, that superior power is your perception, not reality. Look at dyno charts and you’ll see they almost mirror one another. I went the R route because everything fitted on the bike was superior, but the performance difference is negligible.

    I found on track the more smooth power climb out of corners of three and four cylinder motorcycles allowed better track times. The high out put twins come on so hard you break traction or bring the front wheel up so easy you can not push exits. By the time you’re straight from the corner and can let it rip the threes and fours are spoiled up and gone.

    Hi, I have to disagree about the electronic packages section. The 890R comes also with a 6 axis IMU lean sensitive ABS, lean sensitive Traction Control out of the box they act differently according to the riding mode you are in. The track pack (or the tech pack which includes track pack + shifter) allows you to disconnect anti-wheelie and still having traction control on, and the Traction Control on 9 levels. The only main diff is the optional shifter on the KTM. On the other side, it's indeed a shame to have this electronic options considering the price of the bike. Also you can't tell that the Yamaha has better suspensions ! Maybe the Ohlins shock is on par with the WP shock but certainly not the KYB fork with the WP one !! I have to add that I own a 890 R out of honesty.

    The KTM looks like a Black & Decker tool; I am not really hip on that. I also hate the sound of a typical twin, unless it has a 360 crank -- KTM does not have this. Also, by the way, the KTM's redline is not really determined by its number of cylinders. I used to have a Nija 250 twin that redlined at 14,000 rpms. It's more about how the engine is configured and where they want to set max torque and horsepower. I used to like high revving motors but those are better for the track. Lower revving bikes usually get better fuel mileage, with their taller gearing and them having less combustion events.

Your example doesn't say much really, my work is 38km away so I do a lot of riding, 80-100km daily, all year around since 1999 and from all the bikes I had the only lemon I ever got was a Kawasaki ZRX 1200R, should I think the Kawasakis are unreliable? I think not. Never happened to have a problem with KTMs or Yamahas, and my current Duke has 30000km now of daily thrashing without any issue. The Yamaha is a great motorcycle, the refinement of its engine and its sound are the best, the driving position leaves the front end very loose and nervous for sporty driving. The character, the lightness, the supermotard stance and the stability that the KTM transmits are hard to beat, the 890 Duke feels like it has the agility of a small 250 but with the torque and power of a 1000cc, I love that bike it brings the best of each world. It's a new frame for 21 with 30mm lowered headstock height, reduced fork rake geometry and is a lot stiffer than the old one. Performance and reliability put together yes. No doubt. But there are other fun bikes too like the Ducati Monster, the GSX-S 750. But I really love the MT.

    What? there is not even a comparison, the yamaha is a partsbin special with horrific handling and even the SP suspension doesn't save it, not to mention the garbage brakes, the KTM is in another league of it's own..

    What KTM Assembly Plant do you work at?

    KTM duke series are money pits that you have long repairing lists including, engine oil leak, coolant leak, oil pump failure, water pimp failure and some other electric faults. Can’t deny KTMs are really fun and unique bikes to ride, but reliability and quality control just led it down. I’ve owned a 2nd gen 1290 duke R for 3 yrs, and sold it after endless repairing and purchased a 23 Yamaha MT10. It’s amazing as well but much much more reliable. KTMs are for rich guys that have several backup bikes, then KTMs are so fun to own. If folks can only afford 1-2 bikes and have to use as a commuter, then go for the Japs brands, you won’t be regretful.

    I have owned an Enfield, 2 Yamahas, a Kawasaki and now a KTM for commuting (70km a day for years on each bike), all bikes bought new and the only bike proved to be a lemon was the Kawasaki (ZRX 1200R), would it be safe to state that Kawasakis are money pits for folks that have money to throw?

    Sit longer and you will know that KTM is way more comfortable. Mt09 is extremely uncomfortable on long rides. KTM for me any day. The build quality is much better.

    Interesting that you say that. Because I have owned both brands. I still have my MT and commute on it to work and have done rides to Lancaster and other places. And I also own KTM still. And as I said in the film, the difference in comfort is marginal for me and is not a deal breaker. Good that you prefer KTM and you enjoy the ride. However, in my opinion & experience, the new SP version from Yamaha, the handling of the MT has become phenomenal. Again, the difference with the WP suspension from KTM is marginal and should be a deal breaker.

    I have sat on a 1290 super duke r and an MT-09, I would say it's a matter of preference and build. Both are comfortable enough for me to sit on for around 4-5 hours straight before needing to take a stretch break... but then again by the 4th hour my rear and legs are already starting to feel it lol

    The day you find a company that has better overall fit and finish than the Japanese big 4, the Devil will need longjohns.
