DO NOT BUY THE EPIPHONE GREENY

Музыка

DO NOT BUY THE EPIPHONE GREENY: It's just a crazy price for a guitar that is not that special. It isn't that much different from a 1959 LP standard and with a little work you can make one of those your greeny and save yourself about $500... or €700 in Europe.
I think this guitar is crazy, but what do you think?

The last epiphone I tried was the Cantrell "wino". It looked and played great, the price was about as much as I'd spend on an epiphone. No chance I would pay nearly $2300 cdn after tax for a greeny.

Not gonna lie, I bought one of these and it was delivered today (perks of living within the 1 day range of sweetwater), and I'm really enjoying it after having played it for several hours since I put some new strings on it. The GreenyBuckers are significantly different to the Burstbuckers in the 1959 Epiphone, in that they're lower output and closer to an what an actual R9 Custom shop les paul would sound like. No buyers remorse as of now, just enjoying a good guitar. Fit and finish is on par with my Gibson SG 61 standard, and well above my 2014 SGJ, just to frame in terms of other stuff that I have on hand or played in the past. If the idea is to raise the floor of Gibson and raise the ceiling of Epiphone, then this is a good example of that crossover.

No one talks about the neck. I’ve got one of the early JHS Vintage Greeny LPs (2012). Good guitar but the neck is small in the hand, which doesn’t sound like Green’s own description of his guitar. Actually I “unmodded” mine a fair bit to make it a better fit for me, so now it’s more like the Bolan or Ronson LP. Number one mod: get a decent wiring loom. Stripped the maple top to bare wood (nice slab of plain grain under the thin veneer), standardised the very decent Wilkinson pickups, and put a decent bone nut on it. Plays sweet, sounds classic, looks distinct.😊

I think you've changed my mind! I am headed up to the US in a few weeks for a visit and was going to get the Greeny, but am now leaning towards an Epiphone 1959 LP Standard Outfit ADB instead. I only have a single-coil Epiphone at the moment and really want a guitar with humbuckers. The $500 difference wouldn't be such a dealbreaker for me if the guitar merits it and I lived in the US, but going back through customs makes it another $500 (because it's over the tax-free limit). Besides, I can always get a couple of pickups if I really need to have that sound and have friends deliver them .😉

It’s funny that everyone kept asking for Epiphone to be a Gibson. Now that it has become a Gibson with the price tag to match, everyone is losing their minds and wondering what happened. Well, you got what you asked for, if you asked me. People just couldn’t let Epiphone be its own thing and now we’re paying for it. Inflation is also playing it’s part, but Gibson is just taking advantage in a way that they know people will fall for. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the old Epiphone headstock. I loved the clipped wing/tombstone headstock, it was Epiphone’s thing. But like I said, people wanted Epiphone to be a Gibson and now we are paying for it. So, thanks to those people for your contribution to these insane prices.

Totally agree. I've got all ranges of LPs inc amongst others the Epiphone 59, a Gbson Tribute & a Gibson Standard. The Epi 59 is a great guitar, well worth the £800 I paid for it, but this is nothing like worth double that amount. It's a con. As you rightly say don't buy it

It has the custom headstock and custom designed Greenybuckers. Epiphone did miss a trick when it came to case candy. Having a certificate, some Kirk Hammett themed photos, and maybe a custom strap would make for a better collector experience. The Tommy Thayer has its own custom case, custom color Duncan pickups, and special paint. Not a huge Kiss fan but it is a nicely done collector piece.

Very much agree with you. I’m a big Epi fan and own 6 myself and in fairness they have been producing some great quality guitars of late but if signature / high end Epi’s are going to be a thing then around the €1000 mark is a fair price in terms of value etc. I recently picked up the Noel Gallagher Signature Riviera and it cost €999. A fantastic guitar and fairly priced IMO 👌🏻

I’ve been on a major Epiphone kick the last few years, I’ve got a Koa Custom, a green 335, and Pelham Blue SG and one of those faded finish Les Paul Classic goldtops, and I love them all, they are awesome guitars especially for the price. I’m not paying almost twice what I paid for the Koa Custom for a half-assed Greeny knock off.

So we get an affordable Peter Green guitar, but it's not good enough for some people. This guitar is still cheaper than a Gibson and has the all important out of phase pickups. Sure, you can do the mod yourself, but not everyone is a guitar tech.

Can you change the batteries in a vibrator? Then, you can change the magnet in a pickup. You don't have to be a tech to perform most basic guitar tasks or mods. Besides, the point of this video is that it is NOT affordable for most people. It's still just a $900 guitar with a $1500 sticker on it. That's just not cool.

I must confess, I never thought much of lemon burst Les Pauls until this new Greeny fuzz came about, and their marketing worked because all of a sudden I wanted one, albeit not 'the' Greeny they were pushing that still seems too expensive to me. Funny how things work, I found a used Epi 1959 (the limited edition lemon burst), so that oughta keep me happy. So I'll miss out on the "correct" Gibson shaped headstock, and the Greeny neck carve, and maybe the pickups and other paper work... I can live with that! :D

@@JoeBlack1108 Everything, including guitars since corona has gone up. This pricetag is not there bcoz of inflation or moving production to a more costly country. Its there bcoz its a cash grab, its just a 800$ made in China Epi les paul with a fucked up neck pickup, thats it. Headstock? I mean, they make them already for their Gibsons, its literally not an investment. Im not even saying that Chinese guitars are necesery bad, but come on. It cant cost almost double the price just bcoz it got Kirks or Mustaines name on it. People are going to buy it regadless, musicians are all about big names and big pricetags. I just find it really annoying because that shows other companies that they too can get away with it and it drives the price of other guitars even more to the roof.

  • @JoeBlack1108

    @JoeBlack1108

@cycomiles4225 I don't think I made myself clear. It has nothing to do with the Chinese people and the quality of the workmanship, what I am saying is if I found a guitar custom shop in China to build a guitar, you could imagine what kind of wicked guitar you could get for 2k directly going to the shop. Not 2k going to Epiphone and of that 2k split between the CEO of Epiphone and a kickback to Gibson and another slice going to the kirk, so on and so on. If you wanted that guitar out of China you could literally buy it for 500 because your not paying everyone else. That is what I am saying. When it comes to inflation, I don't think the prices have gone up like they have said simply because the stuff you really want or need has gone up and others haven't. 2.50 for a box of Kraft Dinner up from 1.50, but bananas haven't changed. TV, stereos Xbox, PS they haven't really changed. I think inflation has given people and excuse to be even more greedy.

I do have a friend that did get one of the Epiphone greeny guitars though so I am going to get a chance to see one and play it in person and he is going to let me do a video on it as well so we will see what I really think about it once I get my hands on one.

at this point you might as well get yourself an amberburst chibson and buy the greenie pickups yourself and you got an epiphone greenie for cheap with the gibson headstock on it. already did it my self, total costs for everything was not over $600! And for clarification i do own Gibsons, Epiphones and Ibanez's and this was the cheapest route plus the guitar sounds just like the original without the "original price"!!! 😉😊

Epiphone are just taking a leaf out of their Big Brother's book - Gibson already sell multiple versions of basically the same guitars with prices that escalate from 'really expensive' to 'insanely expensive', based on some perceived exclusivity, or association with a certain artist. It's not surprising that Epiphone feel they can pull off the same scam when consumers eat it up so readily from Gibson.

Don’t understand the hate on this guitar?! It’s the first official Epiphone that has a Gibson headstock…other then the Japanese ones…and has really cool pick ups along with a long neck tenon…if you get that on a Gibson your gonna pay a hefty price/customshop prices. You don’t want to pay for the price, that’s fine but the guitar is cool in my opinion. Buy what you like and rock out! Epiphone/Gibson are gonna continue doing their thing like it or not. There’s other options out there 🤷‍♂️

I definitely agree about the price. However, this whole thing is bringing out the Gibson snobs (this always happens whenever something negative about Epiphone shows up). Like yeah, you can get a Gibson for around this price but you can also save your money and get a 1959 Epiphone in lemon burst for $749. You can then put Greenybuckers/Seymour Duncan Green Magics in it and sell the Burstbuckers. You’d come out less than $1000. Possibly closer if you wanted to get the knobs and tuners right, but you’re still saving a ton of money. There are still less expensive Epiphones out there, and no, they are not bad guitars because they’re made in China.
