Do Not Buy The AYN Odin In 2023

The AYN Odin was one of the best retro handhelds in early 2022. However with so many new best retro handhelds released is the AYN Odin still worth it in 2023?

To make it absolutely clear I am talking about the Odin Pro. The Odin Lite is a great value handheld that is well worth the price even in 2023. The Odin Pro however is not worth the money anymore against the competition, even from the Lite.

also, one thing I don’t care yeah I have the best phone in the world. I know that it’s powerful but gaming on it. It’s kind of stupid because it’s too tiny. I want a bigger screen and also I’m looking for something that I can replace my Nintendo switch with because I really don’t care that much about the Nintendo switch anymore. The hype died down a long time ago let alone I don’t know. I just stop playing my switch. I guess cause I get bored of playing switch games but this is also in 4K graphics. I looked at the specs of it. You ain’t gonna get 4K even on a powerful gaming phone is because you need a wide screen for 4K or if you get like a super stretched screen like the Samsung galaxy s24 series it goes up to 4K 1080 because it’s stretched you get a screen like an iPad. It won’t be that way and personally I am a type of gamer who likes the best graphics. Also, I’m a type of gamer that only plays really G for us now that was a pun and true. I only played GeForce now. I don’t play anything else. The reason why is because everything’s on GeForce but I also wanna try to get into retro gaming because I like the old style of games I just never knew how to do an emulator until I watch videos on it and I was like looking for an android handheld

wtf, bad take hilarious. The system is a bit pricey but is absolutely incredible. You can get it now, it is more powerful than practically anything else with a long battery life, fantastic 1080p screen, windows capabilities if people care about tinkering a dual boot, and everything runs smoothly if you come into this with an informed mindset. It's nice to play something without worrying, which is what you will have with an RP3+. Perhaps you will see some outliers, but I've had my Odin for about an entire year now and its going strong. Being totally serious, I'm unsure if you had things set up correctly (ex, performance modes, which firmware, etc).

I was looking for a handheld console to play gamecube games on (mostly Wind Waker and Twilight Princess) and was about to buy a RP3+. AYN Lite> RP3+ > AYN Pro in terms of objective value. But if you plan on MOSTLY playing PS2/gamecube, Ayn Odin Pro is your best bet. The new AYN Loki also might be comparable depending on your needs. But RP3+ is great if you mostly just care about some PSP, PS1, and below for the value. AYN needs a teensy bit more setup effort than the RP3+ but thats about it. Either way, you wont have a bad time with AYN Odin, anbernic, or RP3+ if retro emulation is your number one gaming priority.
Technically I bought mine in 2022, but in all honesty I’m pretty satisfied with my purchase despite spending more than $300 including shipping. My only complaints with the device I had was one of the trigger buttons didn’t have quite as much travel as the other(at least thats what it felt like to me), and there is some screen tearing that goes on whenever I scroll up and down a web page in google chrome, but thankfully I’ve never seen that in any of the games I’ve emulated or any android games like Genshin Impact. It’s also nice to play games at 1080p whenever you can and the cooling fan and battery life is huge plus for me. It’s likely there might be better android devices this year but unless there’s anything truly groundbreaking, I’m pretty content with the devices I already own

Start playing around with you phone, not with the intent of it being your full time gaming handheld but to understand emulation and if you like Android as an emulation device. Odin is a bit expensive and Powkiddy are not great in my experience.
For me, my RP3 plus is for my N64 games and down. And will be purchasing another handheld for GameCube/PS2/Wii, hopefully the next Ayn iteration.
Thanks for the information. I've been stuck between going for a cheaper option with RP3+ and stronger one with Odin Pro. The biggest thing was price, because if I could get an Odin Pro, I could get the base Steam Deck at that price point. In all aspects but price, I think Odin Pro is better. Screen resolution, button/stick layout, looks, ergonomics, etc. But it's not gonna beat a Steam Deck (except screen resolution). So I'm gonna get a RP3+ and I hope Valve releases a newer version of the Steam Deck with a 1080p screen and maybe different button/stick layout. Or maybe I'll go all out and get a GPD Win 4.

The AYN Odin lite is great. This author is a “casual gamer” by self admission, so PS2 emulation isnt really the mainstay. No more heroes is a wii console game. But if youre talking JUST a cheap PS2 alternative, the AYN Odin plays MOST ps2 games pretty well. Worst case scenario, youd notice issues with 20/30% of fames on PS2. So with that, id say its a great console. But if you NEED to play wii games like no more heroes, youd need something more expensive than an AYN Odin like a Steam Deck. But you could get the best of both worlds by getting a nintendo switch for No more heroes, and an AYN Odin Pro for most ps2 games AND you could literally go to a pawn shop and pick up a wii that you could hack with the money that it costs to buy a Steam Deck. Not to mention the nintendo switch is a REALLY good console worth buying. Nintendo has a lot of exclusives so youll stay in the loop. That’d be my personal move anyway but its your money at the end of the day.
I think it's still a great priced item especially since it's on gone on sale a few times. When looking at it as purely just retro gaming sure there is other products that can be just as good at a better price. But the with this device you can play some great android games that just either won't natively run on those other devices or not well enough. It also has the power to upscale and AA games that typically those cheaper devices again may not be able too. I know for myself I could see myself buying one even in 2023 just to play popular titles like Genshin Impact , Cod Mobile or Dead Cells in a more comfortable form then using my phone plus add-ons.

I understand not going for the Pro, but the Lite has on-par performance at a fantastic price. My buddy got an Odin last month specifically to emulate PS2 and he loves it on that big screen - the RP3+ was a bit small for him, and he doesn't have to tweak settings as much as as I do. What I really miss from my Odin on the RP3+ is those M buttons on the back, I use button remapper to launch apps, change brightness, etc with a combination of those M buttons and others. I can only set up macro's using the buttons I have available on the RP3+ and those are pretty much only for gaming, so it's kinda limiting. yeah but keep in mind he has the steam deck, for emulation you can get enough with the RP3 or anbernic, you get more fps with the odin but its just too big, for that size I'll just use the steamdeck, and the steamdeck is the most powerful handheld device we have.
Also you're comparing the Performance Mode on the Odin to the full operating mode for these other systems.

It's close but no cigar, no analog shoulder buttons... for the racing fans... I now got the RP3+ I do use it more often, but if I want 1080p gamecube, ps2 and wii, I prefer the Odin, and 4k video out. The Odin is great if someone wants an all around device, not everyone has multiple systems like you. If you're a tweaker, go for the Odin, if you're not, go for the cheaper systems. Cool video, it's nice to hear different perspectives on the Odin. It's still the Android system to beat, at least until the PiMax comes out.
Retroid Pocket 3+ is too small, gives hand cramps

The AYN Odin Pro might be a little overpriced in today’s market, but I would say the Odin Lite is a perfect device between the RP3+ and the Odin pro. Its only 50$ more than the RP3+ and it can play PS2 and GC at the same level as the Pro, so I would recommend that people opt for it rather than getting the similarly powerful Odin Pro.

I agree with the price point, a 845 is pretty dated in 2023 for £300. It's close to that tipping point where you think "should I just save an extra 100-150 quid and get the steam deck" But as others have stated having access to dual boot, a nice screen and half decent battery life is pretty nice for the budget. Personally I just bought a mi 10t secondhand for £100 and a razer kishi. Does a better job and I still have access to dual boot as well as a functioning, decent mid range phone.

That's a great find! To be fair my original take was based on the price last year
i'm in italy and if i wanted to buy an odin (base) i'd have to pay an additional 100€ for shipping and taxes so the cost would get really close to the steam deck, which is a comparison there's no need to make. i like the odin more than the RP3+ not only because of the analog triggers but because it is stronger, you can run wii, switch and overall more games so it's the choice you should make if you're the kind of person that wants everything. but at the end of the day it's true that for the value the retroid is a lot better, if you have money to spend just buy a steam deck and if you already have a steam deck the right choice in my opinion is the RP3+ (not the anbernic, i've done my researches and although being as powerful as the retroid it's not that comfortable for playing)

Weird clickbait title. If you want 6" 1080p, especially for streaming then the Odin Lite absolutely demolishes the RP3+. And it's not at least 100 bucks difference between the two, but more like 50-60 depending on the color.

But as for traveling it is just too big for my liking. This is why I’m considering the Odin. The size is just like the Nintendo Switch Lite. Which is perfect. But the $300 price tag is pushing me away. Because I can do whatever the Odin can on the SteamDeck, but better. So I would really just be paying for form factor.

Disagree. AYN Odin thrashes the RG505 and RP3/RP3+. Larger screen, analogue triggers, more powerful and HDMI out at 1080P. Worth the extra money! I also have an RG552 which is better for 2D gaming than anything else in this price range. Awesome 5:3 1920 x 1152 screen that using integer scaling provides a larger, better image than the Odin.
I'm only there to buy it to use mobile emulation since that's what its originally used for ps1 games will not run on an 8gb memory device that's just impossible. mobile games only use like what 8 to 4gb memory. I'm not saying that your wrong about other emulation I think they should a make another one but cheaper and have a NVidia processer and 16gb memory or more just to emulate larger games. so, this thing is worth it but not the price for it which I do agree is a bit ridiculous.
Let's see some 3DS emulation comparison
@ChronikSpartan
Жыл бұрын
Mjolnir Stone did a great video showing 3DS emulation on the budget devices. Of course the Odin Pro will be better, it's whether it's better enough to be worth the money.
From what I gathered, the Odin Pro isn't worth if you already have other systems that cover the same games... like a SteamDeck, the RP3+, etc. If you DON'T have a SteamDeck and other systems to cover the games you want to play, the OP is still a decently powered handheld with a WHOLE HOST of possibilities.
Thanks for the nice breakdown!

I love the device but it will be obsolete in the price vs performance factor in the market especially for the odin pro. But it's not fair to compare ayn odin to the rp3+ because rp devices benefited from releasing too many iterations of their devices with very little long time support. Odin pro has better support, software updates and community/developer support than the Retro pocket 3 and 3 plus devices. Sometimes framerate is not everything. Yes I have a steamdeck and it's performance is superior but the odin form factor is superior than to the steamdeck and has better battery life. Playing ps2 games on the odin is just a mere bonus not the main reason to get the system.

@@ChronikSpartan The digital triggers of the others really kill them. At least for me
Well, that’s that. Clickbait confirmed. Anyone thinking of going with an RP3+ (which I own) to save all of $50 will probably end up doing *exactly* what I did: Throwing their hands up in the air out of frustration and finally ordering an Odin Lite 128GB w/ 6GB of RAM to get “only” those extra 10-15 fps to get me above the 20 FPS I’m currently getting on RP3+. Even with pricey shipping the total cost was about $200 less than a SteamDeck. There are ZERO gaming handhelds with Dimensity D900 SOC, so Odin Lite has no competition on SOC. D900 pushes similar frame rates as SD845, but below 48° C while Odin Pro exceeds 75°. There’s headroom in D900 and it will only get faster as optimizations are applied. Odin Lite also includes an LTE modem for data and voice. The Odin Lite is in stock and on sale for $199. Odin Pro and Superpack are sold out, leaving Odin Base & Lite. I snagged an Odin Lite because I don’t think AYN will offer them for much longer as they shift focus to all the Loki variants they offer. If you’re a “casual gamer” considering any of these retro handhelds direct from China, then you’re probably not a casual gamer.

It's the price point that makes it irrelevant in my opinion. The extra power doesn't justify the cost.
Someone here can buy and send ti Brasil?
"The improvement was only about 10-15 frames per second" I mean... first, that's a lot when the ceiling is 60 FPS, and second, that matters a lot more in emulation than in native software since it affects game logic and speed. We're not talking about 130 FPS vs 145 FPS in CS:GO here, or even 30 FPS vs 45 FPS in The Witcher 3 on a Steam Deck. 45 FPS vs 60 FPS is the difference between unplayable and playable for PS2 and GC emulation. And this isn't just nitpicky technical stuff, the difference in speed in immediately obvious, particularly in the audio. But even if that weren't the case, the Odin has a bigger 1080p screen, analog triggers, superior ergonomics, and better video out. There's still nothing else on the market that matches it on all of those fronts (though a few challengers are incoming), so the arrival of a couple devices that sit in a slightly better place on the price/performance scale doesn't suddenly render it irrelevant. Not everyone is trying to hit that particular bullseye and plenty of people are happy to pay more for higher-end stuff even if it doesn't scale perfectly with the cost. Hell, this is a market where people pay a premium for identical devices in metal shells. Basically... can I get analog acceleration for San Francisco Rush 2049 on the RP3+? No. Can I strafe and lock-on with the same trigger in Metroid Prime on the RG505? Also no. Until that changes, a device that allows me to do those things still has relevance.
The Lagtroid Pocket is a joke compared to the AYN Odin. The more affordable systems currently can't run Gamecube, Wii & PS2 without noticeable frustrating lag.
