The difference between west and us (Indians) is that the problem here is not of actual racism like US but its more of mistaken identity and less awareness of the unseen, inexperienced culture of people from northeast. Which should be addressed at high point. The majority of indian population hardly encounters with the people from northeast part due to lack of economic situation or less travel to the region. Who are aware and have knowledge knows, they are as much part of India as any other state, No question asked.

The real problem is that the previous governments did not try to integrate the North East part of India into the mainstream India, there were no road connectivity, no rail connectivity and no air connectivity, so this led to an alienation of the North Eastern people. Now for the past 15-20 years, north east indian people have been given good opportunities and the road, rail and air connectivity has also become better. As people begin to see and interact more and more with the Highlanders, the more the stereotypes and discrimination will be gone. #HighlanderswelcometoAndhraPradesh

The problem is not alienation, the problem is that some people are racist towards others who feel alien to them. You can't justify racism and bad behaviour by saying "oh well they are not connected to us by road." That is not an excuse. So what if they are not connected by road? Does that mean you should be racist to those who are not connected? The problem is racism, not roads.

Even today anybody from southern part of india is called "Madrasi". And i am a telugu guy, born and raised in Baroda, Gujarat, and i've had to hear to this slang so many times, and i basically correct them with a stern but soft voice, and they get the message loud and clear. Its hard for any govt to increase tourism, do infrastructure changes quickly with these circumstances. Also borders are hard to protect due to its mountainous terrain and forests. Those areas are also under many special environmental protected zones and businesses find it hard to setup any business with more regulations when normally we have a lot of regulations even in the mainland india and uncertainty. Whatever this govt has done pro business cultural preservation while taking care of environment, no other has even tried to do this much other than apeasement. Those areas are not really favourable for living or doing business. U see floods every year. Insurgents. Kashmir and north east are cursed because of a lot of reasons. Nothing due to any discrimination but these reasons r why no govt tried to spend a lot of money. Also their population is low so less votes

Although I didn't face it myself, I have kind of had a "second hand experience" (for a lack of better word), I'm a bengali girl who has many friends from sikkim, assam, manipur, meghalaya, arunachal. Two of my childhood friends and me, we went to same college in Delhi. Everytime I went out shopping with themI would hear people call them chinki, chini, Chinese etc etc.. They always ignore all that. Worst part is when even my friend's classmates used to call her, "yeh chinki" "Uss chinki ko dekh na".. She clearly explained to them she's from a state called meghalaya and they were like " Mary kom, Mary kom"... Which might not sound bad to someone who doesn't have to listen to bullshit like this everytime they went out in public. I remember once I even got into a fight with a guy at a restaurant because he commented "Thai massage parlour girls are coming here to study in Du these days"... Some places are worse, some other places are tolerable for them, although the ocassional comments of "chinese maal" Or racist remarks, stereotyping etc never stops completely, it's lesser. They already come here feeling neglected and then they come to face all this. My friend directly ran back to her hometown after her exams finished, she didn't even go for the placement interviews, she didn't wanted to work or stay in delhi because she was just fed up after 4 years of all that. So saying it's the illiterate, uneducated lot who dont know any geography that makes racist remarks is just ignorant, because reality is education doesn't eliminate willful ignorance and racism. I wish more northeastern people shared their experiences, because they'll have many interesting stories from living in delhi, mumbai, bangalore etc Especially the students. Because I realised living with my khasi and sikkimese friend that racism is in so many different levels. Some "posh , rich educated " Look down upon them as barbaric, Junglee or characterless Nepalans just for wearing clothes they like. Then the "Educated" College kids would cracks joke on them , Chinese/east Asian racist jokes about sizes, manhood thinking they didn't understand hindi. And then the illiterate labour class masses just are openly racist, ignorant, even if they speak hindi and explain to them that they are from somewhere near assam (that's the one name they knew).. Just because one looks a certain way one doesn't have to be a racist. Yes they don't no any better you can say.. But I wish they had the courtesy to atleast, leave ignorance aside. But it's too much to ask apparently I can say it will take a long long time for such things to end. Because I already see comments like, why they keep complaining? People call us biharis no one complaining. Yes they indeed look not like indian etc as if people on TVs are the only way indians should look. Even NE people are very hostile to people who come from outside the state in some states, but from my experience, if the migrants they mingle with the locals, are generally warm and polite and dont disrespect the culture or local laws, they are very kind in return. I see a lot more bengali, bihari people in some states than locals. Integration and some Empathy (putting ourselves in others shoes) is the way that the end of all racism & ignorance can start. Sorry for writing this long, but I wanted to share my point of views on this matter

Moreover having been in the EU - the labor market is too restrictive. Since I work there I know *only skilled labor allowed to immigrate.* Just few months back someone in the Netherlands torched the houses of Afghan immigrants leading to severe anti - immigrant protests which left many injured ! This was also the first time Dutch police had to use tear gas to displace the mob. It's crazy outside.

North east Indians do have East Asian influences, but Indian influences prevail over everything else. If one just spends a day in those regions, he/she can see that all those "differences" are just external, it will feel just like India. The transition is so subtle(from "India" to "South East Asia") it's hard to seggregate people. This transition starts right from Bihar and continues all the way upto Rakhine, Myanmar. But so is rest of India. Kashmir has West Asian influence, Ladakh has Tibettan influence etc. What unites us is the overriding Indian influences

Well a major reason could be that geographically, if one were to remove that very small part of West Bengal that connects to Assam, technically the NE states would have no other direct connection to the rest of India. It is sort of how Africa is connected to Asia by the small sliver of land in Egypt where we now have the Suez Canal. So perhaps that is one reason "geographically" they call the "Rest of India" as Mainland. However, the reasons could be more in terms of Political/Ethinic/Cultural discrimination than anything else. It is but natural to see this as a "us vs them" situation. Which is extremely sad nonetheless

@@tjayrf8267 So I am South Indian and if a North Indian considers me black and African and not Indian I should feel entire North India is racist? That's ridiculous. There are some bad apples everywhere. That doesn't mean that everyone else should apologize for these bad apples. Sure it requires educating and making people aware, but you are assuming that the "majority" are making NE people feel they are different. That is not so. I have a lot of NE friends and I don't discriminate them. Nor do any of my friends. In fact many of them are my close friends. In the same vein, I see a lot of my fellow South Indians (especially from state of Tamil Nadu), shower North Indians with racist diatribes. Should I consider this to be "majority" South Indian opinion? Nope. South India is not just Tamil Nadu. It has Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry as well. So you cannot say "majority" of any region is racist. Even within Tamil Nadu majority aren't racist towards North Indians. There are bad apples everywhere.

I am from Guwahati Assam (one of the Northeastern states of India). I can never think that I am not Indian. I am proud of being an Indian and an Assamese. I have been living in Delhi since 2007. From my personal experience I am saying this that I never faced any issue. But that doesn't mean I am denying about the existence of these issues. I'm not even debating about it. It's 12:43 am in India and I just want to sleep because tomorrow I have to go to office. In the universe there's just one Earth and if everyone think about themselves as an Earthling then all will be one and united. All problems will be solved. Peace.

@ourstupidreactions There used to be 7 sisters in NE, now Sikkim is added too I think in Northeast. As far as the discrimination goes, it’s one of our primal nature where we don’t trust anyone who looks different. That comes from the concept of Ahankara (identity as in I vs the other). It’s a very exclusive sentiment coming out of defensive nature from our primal times. Anything stranger is seen as a threat by our survival centric mind. Now the discrimination in terms of apathy comes out of what do you identify as (individual/family/village/community/race/religion/state/nation/species/cosmic) how inclusive or exclusive you’ll be will depend on which identity you choose and your relatability, love and empathy will be within the relatable ones within that identity. Anyone outside of that ball will simply become away from empathy. The Solution is enlarging our identity and embracing and including more. The violence and subjugation depends on the individual nature of that person. If he/she’s rude, they’ll not hold back. If they are gentler, they will maintain distance from the other. In a nutshell, it’s not about race, region or religion. Nor colour, culture, or habits. It’s only about I and You instead of We

Things have changed drastically under the present Government which is heavily investing in North East. So most of these facts no longer hold true.

Definitely more we move forward we will turn into a lot better society. Discrimination is something which can't be cleared completely at once by any law..but we can do small steps by ourselves to eradicate it imo…this is the first time am hearing something like Mainland cause i have personally never thought of northeast part of India as a sideland…the problem comes from lack of awareness, exposure and representation tbh @2:00 Rick talking about/mentioning the Artists i stan & admire the most..is smth i never thought would happen on this channel.. Yes BTS were the best choice & representative..BTS being representative at the UN assembly then the Blue House and now the White House. It indicates how powerful their voices are, they are heard and heeded. Many ppl/general public don’t know that BTS has previously partnered with UNICEF for the "Love myself campaign" to end violence against children and teens so that they may lead safe lives..they hv also spoken at the United Nations General Assembly 3 time already about a number of important world issues such as poverty, climate change & the Covid 19 pandemic...as from the very beginning their music, is about social economic topics, injustices & problems, includes psychological concepts, mental health problems which are still taboo in our society to speak about, self love etc..their music has resonated with millions around the world, they use their music, their platform for good.. everything from their music to them as people.. whatever the group has said & done has helped us fans/Armys, to mould many of our own projects after the group’s philanthropic efforts and causes...as Anti-Asian hate is a global issue..It was only fitting that Biden, invite BTS - undeniably a global force to be reckoned with, to speak out about the issue & it is hoped, make things better in every corner of the world..cuz when it comes to changing social attitudes and culture, a good message is not enough tbh a message is only as strong as who delivers it, & how..as artists, the members of BTS have always genuinely addressed the issues young people go through and conveyed a message of hope in their music, which is one of the reasons us fans connect with the group so deeply..

Well the word discrimination here is just mistaken, we Indians do generally speak open about apperance of the person in front of us you are not expected to feel insulted cz see in mainland India we call a dark boy "KAALOO" infact our society starts calling him kaaloo cz of his appearance and guess what he is telling people that his name is KAALOO, we are really tolarant and never feel insulted. Calling northeast people Chinese is just a light verb name given by us just to identify you by appearace don't take as insult or discrimination.

Pop culture is a great way to create awareness about northeast part of India... For example 'A 65 yr old man from my native village, who all he does is farming and pack of bidi a day and drink at night and goes to sleep' is definitely not educated enough to even know what the whole of India contains, they don't even know what India looks like on the map... What we can ensure is to atleast educate the young population atleast completely about India so that they don't turn out to be like that old man... City people say why do people discriminate n all, but those less educated and less aware people are not wired the way you are... Awareness is the key, be it by videos like these or movies or in academic curriculum or tourism
