Do motorized faders make DAWs better? Ableton Live and Presonus FaderPort 8 Review

I’m a big fan of faders because you can control more than one parameter at a time with one hand - but do motorized faders make a difference?
FaderPort 8 was designed for Studio One and its integration with Live is based on the MCU standard.
In this video I explore how well this integration works, what the limitations are, and what it’s like to use Live with this kind of interface.

    This is a great walk through. Thanks! I've had a FaderPort 8 for a few months now. I use it with Logic Pro X, and like Ableton, there are a few quirks, but nothing too serious. I do love having physical faders to work with. I now tend to work more with my ears, than always looking at the screen, which is a big plus.

    I see this as a valuable companion to the Push 2. I love the deep integration of Push but I don't like mixing with it. I would probably never use the Faderport's plugin manipulation, but that doesn't make it less valuable to me. There's something about faders that map almost unconsciously to levels for me, so that I mix with my ears instead of my eyes. Mixing on Push, on the other hand, is very much a visual experience for me.

    Thank you for this detailed review. Most of times, I only use it to write volume automation in StudioOne4. SO4 more like regular song arranger and mixer, Live more like real time acting and performming, so FP8 seems more powerful in live after watch your review. However, I think 8 faders are a little bit short of faders for large mixing, once your project end up with 7~80 tracks or more(drum may fill up 10 tracks or more). FP16 will be a real arsenal despite price and it can be finally placed in front of keyboard(Now I'm placing FP8 behind my keyboard, have to reach out my arm everytime I touch the faders).

    Hi, loopop!!! I need your help!! I work in Studio One 5 and the NI Kontakt sampler with orchestral libraries from Spitfire, Cinematic Studio and VST synthesizers of orchestral instruments from SWAM. To work, I need to control the parameters of dynamic automation (Volume, Expression, Vibrato, etc.) during the live (performance) of a musical part. I am considering buying a Presonus Faderport 8, because it is equipped with motorized faders. This is what is required in my work. I didn't find an answer to my question on the forum of the Presonus website. Please help me. For convenience, I will state my questions on the points: 1. Is it possible to link Presonus Classic faders (Faderport 8) to the volume, expression, vibrato parameters in each NI Kontakt orchestral library, so that they are constantly stored in memory for constant use? 2. I will be glad if item 1 is possible! You could have suggested how to configure this in Studio One:) 3. If points 1 and 2 are possible, will the Faderport 8 motorized feeders automatically connect to the already recorded dynamic automation settings? Thank you in advance! I really hope for your help!!!

    The smart fabric that Keith Mcmillen uses also effectively works as a motorized fader, minus the moving parts, weight, cost, high current draw, etc.. They're not perfect (hard to see position in bright light, perhaps a bit less accurate), but would pick them over motorized faders in most cases. Of course, none of their offerings are very similar to this thing, but to answer the question "do moterized faders make DAWs better?", I'd say that the smart fabric (or some other touch strip) is generally preferable.

Is there any point in getting this if you have a Push 2? And if so, can they co-exist or would you choose to use one at a time? 2. Would there be any point to creating a Max4Live instrument/plugin to handle the buttons/modes better?

    Re 1: Budget permitting, I think so (using both). Push 2 is awesome but I prefer faders to knobs any day, and the physical representation with the motorized faders is strong. 2. I think that would be quite difficult... the 8 parameter/device limit isn't a deal breaker in my book and that's really the only reason for a script

    Interesting video - something I've always wanted to know more about.. Re. 10:31, while I see the benefit of racking and mapping macros, can you not just re-order the automatable parameters in the expanded view of the device, dragging the params you want to control by the hardware to be the first eight in the list?

  • @loopop

    @loopop

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Regarding rearranging the parameters - I don't think that's possible - how can you do that? Regardless most newer plugins have quite a few parameters, so you need to pick the ones you want to control anyway (and as I show in the video, in that case you don't need macros)

  • @EannaButler

    @EannaButler

    @@loopop You can click-drag the horizontal-slider parameters in that view with your mouse, to re-order them. If the default behaviour of the hardware is to select the first 8 params in that list, then rearranging their order in the expanded device panel should mean that Faderport can see those params that you moved to the head of the list. Which would mean you don't *have* to rack the device... Altho, of course Racks are only a good thing...

    Just one thing makes motorized faders better than without. Imagine that you load a mix your working on. With NO motors then if your faders is NOT at the same position as in the mix then you be screwed because you easy end up with all faders in your mix in wrong positions and have to rebuild this mix. So when you HAVE motorized faders and you load a mix then the faders simply just move to correct positions as in the mix. Another nice feature is that if you do fading of some channels in realtime then the recorded fader positions will automatic play back as in the mix ( on the screen ) So conclusion is , If you first ONE time try motorized faders then you will NEVER go back.

    For me, It's not BETTER but it's slightly faster and more fun. However, since the price of controllers is mostly expensive, it's no longer fun. I'd rather use a DIY infrared touch screen (faster but less fun than having real faders and knobs) or, if I want to spend more, I'd rather go for a used/new digital mixer like the Behringer Wing. I believe this will increase my workflow speed and be more fun.

    Faderport wasnt really intended for Ableton, just like push 1 or 2 is not intended for Studio One. but people started to complain from cubase, fruity pebbles and ableton. so presonus was forced to make it more compatible with other daws.

  • @loopop

    I guess it's up to the software. In Ableton touching the fader automatically takes over control of the parameter. You can then click "re-enable" automation to get it moving and the recorded automation be active again.

    spot on, as always-thanks! question: if we ran the Arturia V collection (that you got me hooked on!) as plugins in Live, couldn't we use the faderport to map and navigate the synth's various controls as plugins, and not have to exit, power off, and reboot in midi mode? I'm looking for a midi knob/fader controller for the V collection without buying a new keyboard and this seems like it could work for that, plus all it's uses for Live...

  • @loopop

    @loopop

    5 жыл бұрын

    MIDI mode here wouldn't help you - you'd still be controlling 8 parameters. The way I would use this with V collection is by using Analog Lab as a container. Then you could choose which 8 Analog Lab parameters you'd want to control, and then you could always dive in to the actual synth. BTW Arturia keyboards are of course great controllers for AL with more than double the 8 parameter controls here

I did have a quick question which hopefully you have time to reply to. I have a somewhat older Fantom G and was wondering if I could use this to also control the faders and operations on that keyboard? I am thinking about getting the new Fantom as well (great video on that one also) and was wondering about using the FaderPort on that keyboard as well. I also have both Ableton and Studio One DAWs, so this might be a great addition
