The new season of Timeless Travel has been announced with buffs to pokemon like talonflame, toxicroak, and azumarill and nerfs to steelix breaking swipe and medicham. Here is a full analysis of the new buffs, nerfs, and pokemon with new moves.

    Why higher attack IVs can sometimes be better in the Great League: it has to do with a proportion of damage done by the fast move vs charge moves. When pokémon mostly do their damage from charged moves, bulk is more important. But a pokemon like Steelix, a higher attack stat can actually result in more wins.

    I caught a 0/14/14 rank 1 Alolan Marowak at Go Fest 2020 and it was very noticeable how much extra bulk it has compared to one with raid IVs. IVs don't matter for every Pokemon, but for some, especially XL Pokemon, they do.

    I have been running a rank 1 XL Oranguru in UL, and that thing ends up on 1hp in so many matches. Especially great with all the incinerate users running around, getting through a boosted confusion or that last charged attack usually helps the next matchup get a farm down I may not have gotten before, or just takes them out. Some pokemon do well and good with any decent spreads, some you just gotta go for that rank 1, and some can perform better with certain stat check points. Know your pokemon.

    I think it’s really important to mention “zero/low attack” hurts you often with super Meta Mon. I can’t tell you how many times my Swampert has lost me a match due to CMP mirror matchups.

  • @brianhuang666

    @brianhuang666

    You’re saying it right but just half of it is right. It hurts when the meta Pokémon is more of a glass cannon that the extra bit of bulk doesn’t help much as you’re pretty much saving the shields for that Pokemon or for example, getting hit by a charge move does 50% health of your bulkier swampert, and 53% at the higher attack swampert, which is not going to matter as you both are going to faint after catching two charge moves. In this scenario winning cmp is more important But for meta Pokémons that already have bulk, i.e. lanturn in the mirror match in the lead if you both don’t swap out. You’re more likely able to tank one extra surf from the opponent as thunder bolts hits not as hard and the spark damages are adding more up on your opponent. Pokémons like lantern or whishcash as I’ve used often, there are many games that was secured by them by having lower attack stats so even if they lose cmp quite often, they were bulky enough to tank a charge move and remain like 1-3 hp and to throw the charge move afterwards to K.O

    especially in meta mons that can do super effective in the mirror or can basically one shot itself, for example swampert or trevenant. Its not as important in mons like lickitung or skarmory..

    I think it’s important to remember that having the rank 1 doesn’t guarantee these wins. You still have to use them correctly eg knowing when to take a charge move, know when you can farm down.. in order to take full advantage of the prime stats

    I remember one of my first PVP mons was a 10+attack Umbreon built when i had no idea about PVP IVs. The bulk difference between it and the top 20 I now have is huge. 7 more wins in PVPoke against GL meta. So those PVPoke sims are also pokemon dependant, IVs will matter much more for some mons than others.

  • @lizrrdbreath

    I would hypothesize that as more moves are introduced into the game, pokemon get more optimized move sets, and moves are better balanced, matchups become far more binary making stats matter less. I think though that the ultimate answer is "it depends". On some pokemon stat product obv does matter, on others the pokemon will win/lose its matchup regardless. I also think it matters a lot depending on what level you're playing at, if you're just looking to jam games then no really it doesn't matter you're skill and your opponents skill will probably introduce enough variance that the matchups are kind of mutable (to a degree). But if you want to be the absolute best, ranking high on the leaderboards, winning tournaments and such, then your actual matchup breakdown will matter way way more. Whether that means you should run the highest stat product or focus on break points will ultimately be up to that player though. Personally I just worry about stat product because its the easiest to measure and look for pokemon that are "good enough" because I'm not playing to be the absolute best, I just enjoy jamming games.

    For Master league the matrix simulations get a lot easier, and it can be surprising what works when it isn't a hundo or even level 50. My level 46 Groudon at 15/13/15 loses several matchups but is still very usable. And at level 50 (if I ever get there) it'll be basically the same. It's pretty easy to just check the matrix with several different levels and IVs. IVs matter, but doing some checks can help you thrift in the right places.

    So the pros of having a good one in my mind has always been that you usually come out from winning matchups with more hp and/or die from losing matchups with having done more damage. I think winning more matchups with a more attack heavy one, ranked worse is interesting but it only seems worth it in some cases.

    I think the instances where they matter are really only when a high attack stat makes it so its not XL. As soon as it becomes XL due to a low attack stat, it makes a lot of matches which are already negative a lot closer. I think it's more about making matchups closer rather than picking up matches, which in general, if you don't see those specific matches, you're better off against the general meta.

    This is why I don't always go for the Rank 1s. Having 2-4 in the attack stat helps in the mirror and as long as you maintain certain bulk, then you'll be fine. By rank, I stay in the top 100, maybe 150 depending on the Pokemon. My Virizion is rank 759 and Double Kicking the Open UL in neutral or positive matchups, and usually winning CMP (or CAP?) against opposing Virizion or Cobalion (same stat product). I'll either hard win or hard lose, so rank doesn't really matter all the time. My Azu is also rank 242 with 4-15-15 spread, and winning CMP/CAP in the mirror really helps.

  • @siphon_x
    @siphon_x6 ай бұрын

    Hi @DanOttawaPOGO, good video and I agree with the conclusions. However, I feel like some of the explanations are - uhm - a bit misleading. You always make it sound like higher level has some inherent quality, which striclty is not accurate. Also, there are some other slip ups here and there. To start: In GO and mon has 3 relevant stats for combat: attack (A), defense (B) and stamina (C). The formulas for A, B, and C you show at around 1:30 are correct, i.e. the effective A/B/C values are the (base values plus the IVs) times this CPM. The CPM is multiplier is a number

  • @siphon_x

    @siphon_x

    6 ай бұрын

    Ah, just realized, I lost my train of thoughts on the "why is stat product relevant" thing. So, we had mon X with A_X/B_X/C_X vs. mon Y of the same species but with A_Y/B_Y/C_Y. If both use the same move that produces DPT base damage per turn, the damage mon X will take from mon Y is DPT * A_Y / B_X. The total damage after t_X turns thus is t_X * DPT * A_Y / B_X. It will faint if this value reaches C_X, so C_X = t_faint_X * DPT * A_Y / B_X or t_faint_X = C_X * B_X / (DPT * A_Y) and likewise t_faint_Y = C_Y * B_Y / (DPT * A_X) Now we can look at the ratio of the to faint times by dividing the two equations and get t_faint_X / t_faint_Y = (C_X * B_X * A_X) / (C_Y * B_Y * A_Y) So, the ratio of the faint times is the same as the ratio of the stat products. The ratio is > 1 when the stat product of mon X is larger. In that case, mon X faints later i.e. it wins. For a ratio < 1, mon y wins.

    I think my takeaway is: 1) stats matter, but not so much you should hunt for the rank #1. 2) for legendaries and XL investment Pokemon, they are worth a little more analysis and time to a) find the best rank and, b) look to see if break points, etc matter.

  • @brianhuang666

    @brianhuang666

    I think with skill and good team reading (so you know how to align your Pokemons ) hitting veteran was not an issue at all I’m not that sure but I remember even in tournaments there are players using horrible iv mons but still were able to take many games And I think iv really don’t matter for glass cannons like shadow charizard or greninja that they are going to faint to the same certain amount of charge moves the opponent throws if you don’t shield no matter what ivs you have, in this case higher attack may even be preferred as you always win cmp even if the ranking is lower But for bulkier Pokemons like lanturn or whishcash if you have used a lower attack ones before you would have noticed how many times you tanked a charge move and survived with 1-3 hp remaining and throwing your charge afterwards to KO

    Dan, question do the actual physical size of the Pokémon matter in GBL? Like a XL size Lickitung vs a xs small one leveled up to the same CP?

    If I get a pokemon in the top 80 I use it if I don't have a better one. The top 10 pokemon all are expensive af. So in the meantime, I rock with the cheaper and still very good #10 #80

    Pvpoke rankings use all valid pokemon when it calculates individual rankings. That's why the Sableye rank 1 is so bad compared to the meta. If you compare them to all valid great league Pokemon the rank 1 wins more matchups. So there's also that to consider.

    Yeah, IVs definitely matter. All it takes to confirm this is experimenting with the PoGo PvP Battle Simulators. Higher stat product/perfect IV versions of the same Pokémon pick up wins usually and typically lose a few wins with bad IVs. Yes, there are caveats to this where a higher attack weight can help with CMP ties and hitting fast move damage breakpoints in some cases but “generally speaking” a higher stat product does matter and being able to survive with 1 HP to throw that last fast move or Charge move can win you games for sure. I’d say IVs matter about as much as they should - it’s not the end of the world usually and the differences can be rather muted but they do matter so hunting for good IVs is worth doing.

    CMP should be remodeled ! Its currently the greatest shit ever ! Im currently on the Raid of trading Cosmog until I get a at least a 15/13/14 or 15/14/13….so yesterday I got a 14/15/14… still useless because of CMP. Pls remodel this system to like „CMP goes to the Pkmn who has more IV points“ this would make Def and HP more equal to Atk …..its not only Cosmog …I have countless of 14/15/14 or 14/14/15 legendaries and they are basically useless …

    Why does the extra damage matter if the CMP will always go to the opponent? Even 1 extra power move let alone a few is way more damage than 0-15 boost
