Do it! Restring a Roman Blind
00:00 How to Restring a Roman Blind:
Why watch me? Because I love making my own curtains and blinds! And I can show you some tips from when I taught my own students how to make soft furnishings.
00:35 What you’ll need:
A tape measure
Pencil and paper
Non-stretch, braided blind cord
Scissors
A stepladder, maybe?
00:57 Calculate how much blind cord you'll need:
Measure the drop, from the top of the blind to the bottom, then double that figure.
Now measure the width of the blind from the left to the right-hand edge and add that figure to your first doubled one.
01:13 Example of my measurements:
Drop: 117 cm drop (46"), which doubled is 234 cm (92").
Width is 87 cm (34”).
Add that to the doubled figure which makes 321cm (10'6").
A Roman blind has vertical lines of rings. And I’ll need 321cm for each line.
I’ve got three lines of rings, so that gives 963cm, which I rounded up to 10 m.
I’ve chosen a 3mm diameter cord the same colour as the lining because this blind is made with fairly heavy fabric and it's interlined, so I want to make sure the cord’s strong enough for the job.
02:08 Take down the blind and remove the old cord:
Hold the toggle on the pull cord and cut above the knot.
Pull the blind off the Velcro.
Then lay the blind on a clean table, with the wrong side facing upwards.
At the bottom of each row snip the cord above each spring-loaded toggle and pull the remaining cord out.
03:02 Cut new cord and thread blind:
Cut a length of cord twice the length of the blind, plus its length to the right-hand edge. My pull-cord is on the right-hand side. If yours is on the left, just reverse these instructions.
Thread the cord through a quick-release toggle. Give it a little tug to make sure that it’s caught properly.
Please look at the information relating to UK blind safety in this link:
www.rospa.com/campaigns-fundr...
Check local regulations if outside of the UK.
Start at the bottom ring (or rear cord safety device) on the left-hand side and thread vertically through all the rings to the top. Repeat this step with each row of rings. Peg the cords temporarily to stop them slipping out.
06:26 Fix the blind back above the window and string through screw-eyes:
Press it firmly onto the Velcro tape.
Starting with the cord at the left-hand side, thread it through the screw-eyes towards the right-hand side and repeat, threading the cord through the screw-eye above each row and all others to the right.
08:17 Tensioning the cord:
Bunch the cords beyond the screw-eyes and pull each one individually to ensure the tension is even. If the cords are too tight, the bottom hem will pull up. So each cord needs to take an even amount of the load.
Knot the cords together about 2.5 cm (1”) beyond the last screw eye to form the top of the pull-cord.
09:40 Plait the pull-cord and finish:
Enjoy your achievement. You’ve just mended your own blind for about the cost of a takeaway coffee.
If you have questions, ask me in the comments.

I’ve looked for a while trying to figure out how to fix a very large, very heavy Roman blind. I’ve called many places to ask if they did repairs to no avail. I found your video and thought what do I have to lose. I now have a working blind! I can’t thank you enough!! The cost to replace this blind today was unbelievably expensive plus this blind was a special order a long time ago and there was no way to get an exact replacement. Thank you again!

I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. Makes me believe I can do this! I was struggling to figure out how I was going to staple my fabric with a staple gun with such a narrow edge...my window sill frame edge beyond the window itself is only 1/2 in. I will do as you've taught, I will velcro it to my 3/4 in by 3/4 in l shaped corner edge mounting board then install it with l brackets into the window, and string it at the window just like you've modeled for us. I'm ready and super excited to give it a go and see it through. My dear spouse works nights and we need a shade behind our blinds!

@makeitdoit5495
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Laura! I don’t have a video on making Roman blinds. Maybe I should do that one day…
Thank you for this. I've just re-strung quite a wide blind with 7 vertical cords. Because i needed to feed them all through the eyelets at the top, I used a slightly narrower cord than you did (I think), but it's still a bit of a squeeze and the blind is therefore a bit 'stiff' to pull up and down. Do you suggest a narrower cord?
@makeitdoit5495
2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for watching the video. Yes it sounds as if you could do with a narrower cord. You can get 1.2, 1.5 & 2mm depending on the weight of the fabric & therefore the finished blind. Those sizes are probably more commonly used. The reason I chose 3mm for the blind in the video was that it’s a thick, embroidered linen with interlining and lining, so it’s quite heavy. Originally it had about a 2mm cord and that lasted a few years. Try a thinner cord and see how it goes. Well done!
Great video! I was hoping that you had a video on how you made this Roman Shade but no luck. Being able to fully remove the shade to be able to wash it is what I'm looking for (kids!). Where did you learn how to make this?

Thank you for this. Our blinds operate with a chain mechanism, but it is the string that needs to be replaced. Will your tutorial still work for this?
@makeitdoit5495
2 жыл бұрын
Hi, unfortunately it’s not the same as the blind I show. However, if you carefully follow the blind cord in the cartridge, it should be replaceable. Good luck!
The trouble is that the top of my window frame is about 15ft up so I have to do all this on a ladder, and I can’t go round behind the curtain-who can?-to do all that threading. I had to do it without sticking the Velcro in place otherwise I couldn’t see the holes to thread the cords through. I would like to see her extend the video and demonstrate threading the cords through the eyelets from the front of the blind.
@makeitdoit5495

Hello Suzy, thanks for watching my video. That’s an interesting conundrum you have there. I’d want to get behind the blind to re-thread it, if it can’t be removed. Sounds as if you need to call a specialist if you don’t feel you can do that… Good luck!

Do you know where I can source a blind kit? I have 4 vertical rows of rings. No rings at the top but some plastic things instead - poss to do with self-licking mechanism … no locking plastic things at the bottom - strings are just knotted onto the lowest rings, and there is a single length of cord going down to the pulley handle. I have spare cord already.
Hurray! Mission achieved and it looks great. I have dorma windows - presume the triangle shapes are the same idea, but what measurement do I use for the drop? Maybe half way down the diagonal side? Many thanks. Didn’t think I could do it!

Hi! Thank you so much for this video. It was very useful. What I don't get is, why are there double screw eyes at each end of your mounting board? You seem to have used only that extra one on one of the ends, so I assume the one on the other end is just there in case you would like to thread it on the opposite way. Could you confirm if this assumption is correct?
@makeitdoit5495

Hi, thanks for your feedback. You’re right, I only use the double screw eye on the side that I have the pull cord. As you say, the other one is there incase I wanted to have the pull cord on the other side - so it isn’t used in this case.

@@ronmac-ff3sx yes you can buy readymade ones in various sizes in the UK. They’re sold with all the kit you’d need to mount it on the wall, so I guess you could buy one and then use your existing kit to attach your new blind material to it. I suggest you ask in a department store, then you can have a look at what the fixings are. Good luck 🤞🏻
Please can you tell me how strong the cord is as yours looks thicker than mine.
@makeitdoit5495
11 ай бұрын
Hello, thanks for watching. I’ve used a 3mm cord because my blind is heavy: the fabric is thick/embroidered, and it has interlining as well as lining. You can get cords that are very strong, but only 1.2mm diameter. This makes them ideal for use in cord connectors and with cord beakaway connectors - any thicker and threading these connectors is fiddly. Try your cord and see how long it lasts. Even thinner cords are available for sheer blinds where you want them to be less visible, and the weight of the finished blind is minimal. Good luck! 🪡🧵
