Do I regret buying a $1200 push mower?? Toro Timemaster 30 review

The Timemaster is a residential, 30" cutting width push mower, using a 223cc Brigs & Stratton engine. With the 30" deck it couldn't have a better name, I use it to cut roughly 12,000sqft twice a week and it definitely cut down the time it took to get it all done compared to my Honda HRN. After using it for a full year, I don't think I could ever go back to a smaller deck size to cut my lawn, its so nice covering the extra area every pass.
While I will always have a Timemaster in my garage, its not without its faults the fuel tank is far too small and the deck clogging are issues I would like to see changed. That doesn't mean its not a great mower overall, its a beast of a machine and should be considered by anyone looking at the larger profile mower market.

When I needed to replace my regular push mower, I was considering selling my zero turn and going back to a Timemaster 30 that I loved but that blew a head casket in year five (previous Briggs engine with 8.25 ft/lb torque). I've come to learn that I can mow my lawn quicker and less troublesome with one mower; a Timemaster 30 than with a zero turn and then finish off with a regular push mower. But these things list now in 2022 at $1,450 and can't be found for less than $1,400 at the big retail stores. I also learned that all other walk behinds have also gone up 40%. I decided just to replace my regular push mower for the small areas and ditch line and keep the zero turn, but even doing that was a $400 setback.

I have written Toro with an idea for this. Take a similar gas tank, and remold the underneath so it screws onto the existing gas tank like you would the gas cap. Well, the exmarck is its own brand but Toro makes one as well. Sounds about right at 50%more though. I suppose they expect the commercial versions to run for 8 to 10 hours a day. I top off my tank before I mow and two weeks later I mowed without filling and it just ran out as I finished. On the plus side. Less fuel to sit around and gum up that carb and less to waste at the end of the season doing a run off. I wonder if that's what they were thinking when they designed it.

I've owned mine for 5 year and regret having bought it. I've had to replace the engine [warranty, but still] and the timing belt will snap if you hit a rock or two, requiring a fairly involved replacement process. I've replaced mine twice in as many months and several times before that. It's a pain to work on yet you'll be working on it a lot unless you have a fairly flat, debris-free lawn. For the price of the timemaster, why not just go for a commercial toro 21". They are about the same price but are way more durable than the Timemaster, can mulch or bag wet grass quite well, and move pretty quickly. If property is heavily landscaped, the commercial 21" may actually be quicker than a timemaster because it's easier to turn and more nimble. I currently own a 21" toro commercial with the Kawasaki engine.....fantastic machine. Mulches and bags grass...wet, dry, or thick....with no issues. I've looked at the timemaster but many dealers steered me away from it because of the durability issues and recommending spending the extra money and going for the commercial turfmaster.

I was researching and following reviews right at the time that Toro went to the new, larger engine, but with the same-size tank but now also with a slower and more troublesome filling process, and this complaint came up in every single review from the very beginning. The older model would run just long enough to mow a half-acre lot, so this was already a weakness of an otherwise great mower concept that Toro invented at the retail level and also the commercial level. There are, of course, other weaknesses of a compact, wide-cut mower, such as a tendency for grass to overwhelm the deck and clog the chute area whether its the bagger chute area or the side chute opening area; but these other weaknesses are more than made up for by the benefits you get for the wide path and ease of use via Personal Pace.

I had Hondas for 30yrs and last yr switched to the TimeMaster bc of the 30” width. HORRIBLE quality vs Honda- in the last yr I’ve replaced the rear grass flap guard (so thin compared to Honda), blade drive belt and yesterday the spark plug boot pulled off when I changed the plug (plug wire is WAY too short). Starts horrible compared to a Honda (2-3 pulls). I kept my Hondas on average 8yrs and did nothing but oil change, plug change and blade sharpening. The TimeMaster seems like a maintenance headache, which could be easily be greatly improved with better quality parts. Plus side is the cut quality is good - I also sharpen blades 2x yr and obviously the time savings. But this is a Chevy compared to the Honda Cadillac.

I do the same thing...Part time lawn care... I have a 2018 Timemaster 223cc. Ive had no major issues with mine... This is a non-commercial mower and needs to be treated as such. All the issues folks speak about have truth. The deck will clog in tall wet grass, however in tall dry grass i've never had the deck clog and many times when folks are talking about the clogging they should be double cutting at different heights. Here in Texas I've never had an issue with inclines as its fairly flat here, however the personal pace needs adjustment from time to time and Ive found this resolves most issues. I have upgraded the pulleys to commercial grade(Turfmaster pulleys are a direct fit) I did this at year 2 just because. Ive changed belts twice not because they broke , just because its smart maintenance. I run non-ethanol gas and Amsoil small engine oil, I clean the air filter weekly as in my opinion this is one of the most neglected maintenance issues. The rear grass flap under the mower will tear up, I've replaced mine and when I did I wrapped it with heavy duty gorilla tape and so far it has not tore. Cut quality is a B+ quality whether bagging, mulching or side discharge. I use Toro's 3 in 1 blades bought at Tractor supply and find they do just as good as as gators, ballard rippers or copperhead blades. Mine is an electric start and I have no issues, usually bump it a time or two in the morning then hit it and it starts right up, later through out the day it starts with just a bump. I charge the battery usually only twice a year. I simple love the Timemaster and frankly think its the best 30" on the market. I love the personal pace propel system. The Toro HDX Turfmaster may be the better mower for a fulltime commercial operation but for my needs the Timemaster is the way to go. If mine blew up tomorrow I would buy another one or another B&S engine and bolt it on.

PLEASE HELP ME FIND A POWERFUL LAWNMOWER!!!!!!!!!! I currently have the Toro 22" (56cm) Personal Pace® All Wheel Drive Mower (21472). On paper, it looked like a decent enough lawnmower. Unfortunately the only way I can get this lawnmower to run smoothly, is if I raise the deck significantly. I like to cut my lawn close (low to the ground) & this mower just can't cut the mustard! I kid you not, every two steps the mower will shut off. You can just hear the motor struggling like it's on life support. It's pathetic. And I don't want to raise the deck because the lawn won't be cut the way I want it to be cut (nice and short). I'm looking for a self-propelled lawn mower that's a beast. Something with *ample power* that can cut through tall grass, even wet grass (we have a little dip in the backyard, and water runs through it, to a sewer grate in our backyard) and WEEDS. Can someone please recommend a *POWERFUL SELF-PROPELLED LAWN MOWER.* I'm not interested in a mower that you ride. That's crazy overkill for my lawn. Don't need it, don't want it. I'm at my wits end with my current lawnmower. I genuinely want to have an Office Space/printer moment with that lawnmower. A 20 minute job becomes a 2 hour job. That's not a gross exaggeration either. My FitBit was congratulating me for all the cardio I was doing. Pulling that damn pullstring on the lawnmower every two or three steps. Ridiculous! Absolutely ridiculous!

My advice after owning one for 9 months. You need to be honest with yourself. If cutting damp or even wet grass is a fact of life the time master is NOT for you. The platform clogs faster than any mower I have ever seen. It clogs and Boggs the engine sometimes with in 30 feet !!!!!! and I'm not talking about supper wet or even long grass. I really should do a video on this clogging and bogging. If you live in a dry area that allows you to ALWAYS cut dry grass then yes this is a great mower if not....... MOVE ON !!!
