Do I prefer my 997 or 991 Porsche 911? Vlog

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Porsche Vlog 36. Having owned both of these cars, I thought it was time to make a video on my experiences and explain which car I think is best based on what I look to get out of a Porsche 911.

I had the same experience.....Being in love with cars and Formula 1 when being a child, a Ferrari represented the holy grail. Now as an adult, I recognize that a Porsche delivers everything that a Ferrari represents. The difference between Ferrari and Porsche is...Ferrari owners are proud to tell you how little miles they have on their car and Porsche Driver will happily tell you about their six digit plus mileage......

I agree, I tried a 991.2 and it was too perfect. It felt like my man could have driven it quickly without any trouble. I actually prefer my old 996 because I feel like I am the one making it go quickly. Give me a manual gearbox and hydraulic power steering any day over a car with an auto, electric power steering, rear wheel steering and more computing power than you average space shuttle. I can live with the out of date interior just to have the pure driving feel.

The 997.2 is the greatest generation of Porsches, you still have the driving experience of a 996 (manual gearbox, not too many driving aids) while having a really modern interior like the 991

Great insight on both cars and I appreciate your honesty when reflecting on the strengths of each. It really is different strokes for different folks. I love racing my Porsches on the track, but I have many Porsche friends who have owned Porsches for years and never been on the track once. They definitely prefer different options or even pdk vs 6spd based on how they will use their Porsche. I also totally agree with you about your Ferrari comments. I have been a Porsche enthusiast and owner for almost 20 years. Own several of them and can appreciate all Porsches for their joy to drive. In fact Porsches are so satisfying to drive that they really do check all the boxes and other cars are just not that appealing. Yes, it would be nice to have unlimited money and have a few exotic cars in the garage, but the Porsche would still make you smile and be an incredible joy to drive no matter how many Ferraris you had. I also totally agree where I want to be in control of what my car is doing 100 percent of the time. 6speed manual for me because I enjoy using all four limbs while immersed in the driving experience. I don't need a radio either ;^) I have my Cayenne S with all the gadgets to get around town in and relax in while I drive. Great choice at the end. One of the reasons I am having a really difficult time letting go of my 997 C4S too ;^)

Great video, and very well balanced comparison! Have a 997.1 with X51 powerkit, PCCB, manual, sports chrono. Having test driven 2 991's, completely agree with you about the way the cabin feels - also the 'drive by wire' steering. 991 is faster and of course a lot more tech, but it doesn't have the same 911 feel...

@@gusibrahim6961 the 997.1 had the IMS bearing issues and other issues, so you cant say its better really can you? The 997.2 fixed all of those issues so its basically how the 997.1 should have been on release. Cant really see how anyone can say the 997.1 is better than the 997.2 ? That makes no sense and after you get a 15k repair bill for bore scoring like I did you will realise that.

At 10:01 there is reference to changing gears in the 997 using a floor mounted lever. This can be done in the 991with PDK in Manual mode, when the lever operates the gears sequentially. At 13:42 mention is made of turning the sports exhaust off in the 997, but there is no PSE button shown in the video. The 991 does not appear to have the PSE.button either , but in the sound comparison at 4:15, it does sound quite loud. : ) Another advantage of the PDK, is to have the Sports Chrono Option, which will have the Launch Control.

Thanks for taking and the time and effort to make a great quality vid with some cool cut sequence tunes. I also like the review of the choices and came to the same conclusion as you. I have the 997.1 manual C2S which is great on the weekend drives but sitting in traffic and going to do errands I would rather do in something else like a 991 PDK. I think the solution is to get the 997 and then when you can whether it's money or space get the 991 for a daily. By the way both your cars look awesome. I really like the choice of white with the light interior on the 991. Never seen this combo before but looks the goods. (just your kids lol)

Great video. As an owner of a 997.1 C2S (6MT) and having a brother and dad who both own the 991.1 C2S (PDK), this video was of interest to me. Just a small correction, the 991 is MUCH faster around the Ring, time is something like 7:38 (PDK) vs 7:56 for 997.1 (6MT) and 7:50 for 997.2 (PDK, IIRC). So as pure lap times, the 991.1 is a quicker car. I also agree with you that it is more refined and it larger, so transporting people is easier. That being said, I also agree with you that as a purely fun car to drive around town, up a canyon, etc....the 997 is a bit more fun. Here is how I look at it. 997: canyon, around town, tight roads, pure driving experience/driver feedback. 991: best track times, transport people, impress neighbors (more refined), more modern infotainment system, longer drives/trips, traffic (for those that have long commutes on freeways that have a lot of stop/go traffic). Both cars are incredible, the 991 is more modern, the 997 has a more retro feel.

Great comparison, but the elephant in the room which was not discussed was about engine reliability. The 3.6 & 3.8 997.1 cars can suffer with score bores issue requiring an expensive engine rebuild to resolve (circa 8-10k). The issue was resolved in the 997.2 cars and onwards but that's reflected in their costs which are significantly higher than the 997.1 cars. That's a consideration IMO.

The 997 is the perfect amalgam of everything that is Porsche. Mine ( Carrera S Cabrio) is now 10 years old and I still look forward to driving it at every opportunity. The 991 and 992 remind me too much of the 928, as a driving experience. Bigger 911s are not better Porsches. The visceral feel of the car cannot be translated into mere words, and the experience cannot be duplicated by Ferrari or anyone else.

Great video, Having done few spirited track days in pdk 991.1s I agree I miss manual. But all stats show that 991.1 s is considerably faster lap times than 997.1s . Doesn't necessarily make it more rewarding havi g a 2 sec lap time but not rowing g it yourself. Besides im sure most of us are leaving xx seconds on the table that odd time were on track anyhow.

Firstly, just to say that I think the white 991 looked the best of all your 991s. Just something really classy about it. I get that the 997.1 C4S manual is best for you, and that you seem to prefer the Cayman 981 S PDK over the 991s you had as your more dailyable sports car option. As an older person, I'd choose a 991 or 992 as my more everyday sports car, and a 997.1 C2/C4 manual for a B road blast. I know there are engine issues with the 997s, but the pre-DFI engines have a special character, just as the air-cooled engines before them. And it's not that the DFI engines totally solve all the problems. I am always somewhat surprised that the majority of 997s sold with the Tiptronic transmisson. I understand that maybe most were sold to people who used them for commuting in big cities, particularly London, but I think I would have tended towards a Mercedes SL if I wanted an auto. However, I do think the PDK is a game changer, although I've heard of some people requiring new transmissions due to electronics failures, so they're not as perfect as most people seem to think. At the end of the day, there are so many personal factors that it simply comes down to what suits your situation best and what you can afford. We are blessed with so much choice.

Great video!! I think of the same thing when I look at a 991. Not for me at this time (tastes change). The body though has grown on me. The 997 has a wonderful shape and is as large as a 911 should be in my opinion. 991 is too big, but the interior is light years ahead. It makes the 997 look dated on the interior. Almost like an air cooled vs a non air cooled. I personally think the sweet spot in a 997 GTS. You get the best of everything and its still able to be a Daily Driver.

I drive a manual 997S, I like the way that it is still quite rudimentary. I love the way it drives and sounds (raw) and the way that it attracts people driving lesser cars like Audi’s, BMWs etc to come and make fools of themselves in front of me. A Porsche 911 is a thoroughbred sports car, not a souped up family car, I know that so let these idiots in their focus RS’s and such like have their fun. If it ever came to a race around the ring or any other circuit they wouldn’t stand a chance against a 997, it’s chassis is so good, they would get spanked!

Nice real-world review. We are always told that 987 boxsters/caymans are the same as 997's from the doors forward, so its no surprise that the 997 feels like a small car inside. One car can't really do anything, I keep considering chopping in a manual 987 and an auto V8 super saloon for a 991. But they are just so different, nothing can do it all - even with an auto gearbox with paddles, I rarely use the manual change - and yet as soon as I get stuck in a long traffic jam with a manual box, I get the rage. Being super-comfortable on long runs and very focused on a B-road blast are also difficult to combine. As is interior space and a car small enough to enjoy on UK small roads. So its two cars for me....

Just found your channel. Good video giving your perspective on the differences between your particular vehicles. I agree with you concerning owning a Ferrari vs Porsche. While a Ferrari is within reach, I have never thought that the 'smiles' per mile that I get out of driving any Porsche could be replicated driving any Ferrari. Ferrari is a beautiful automobile, but, IMO, doesn't provide near the experience that a Porsche does. The friends I have who own Ferrari's most always take them out early on Saturday and/or Sunday for fear of some lame brained teenage driver smacking into them. I'll take any one of my Porsche's (except the 993) out on any day or time of day. One thing you commented on concerning driving experience made me chuckle. In comparing the 997 to the 991 the main difference with your experience seemed to be the shifting of the transmission. If you are really looking for driver input/feedback & output from an automobile, then get rid of your late model Porsche's and go back to almost any sports car made in the 70's. Porsche 911T or E, Austin Healey MK 3000 or Sprite, MGB or Midget, Triumph TR250 or TR6, Alfa's, even some of the old Japanese Datsun 510's and 240Z (the list could go on and on). These classics didn't have the obscene power and electronics of today's cars. They demanded your undivided attention to their particular configuration to make them go fast, and most had rack and pinion steering (feedback?, OMG!). Talk about smiles per mile and a 'true' driver's car. Again, good video from a driver's perspective concerning your particular vehicles.

Nice story with the Ferrari…you are so right. With a Porsche you have all you need. When you have the money, buy a GT3RS or a GT2RS and forget the Ferraris, they are hot, iconic, fast & beautiful…..but there is nothing like a 911! Thats 60 years of history, development and evolution.

Great, great video. You gave me a good idea of the difference between these two cars and I would choose the 997 too, however, isn't the 991 the faster car?

How much headroom does the 991 have? I have a 997 and on track days with a helmet on I barely fit uncomfortably. Surprising since I am only 6 ft.

I’m hoping to buy my first Porsche this year hopefully a c4s 997 - manual . My bmw m sport 640d gran coupe is like driving the star ship enterprise stick it in sport mode full auto boom 💥 its doing 120 while whispering would you like to go faster ?? My old Subaru etc uk300 was like an analog screamer - you had to rag it in every gear and it was bliss -I’m hoping the future 997 will be somewhere in between those cars mentioned

I’m in the market for a pre owned 911 (2012 997 or 2013 911 price range) - I know you chose the 997, but was that because the manual set up was the predominant factor to sway your opinion? What I’m saying is, if your 991 was manual do you still think you would pick your 997? I’m also only considering manual in both for my choice, no pdk Thanks for the clarity and phenomenal video. I hope I get a reply and helps me make a choice.

I’m with you on this: growing up, I admired the Porsche but lusted after the Ferrari. Now (over 50), it’s the 911 all the way. After the Carrera, it’s the turbo, GT3 or the 911R!

I've owned both the 997.1 and 991.2. No question the 991.2 is better car for me. The 997.1 with 325 Hp never felt fast enough. It also has a very harsh ride and feels less refined than the 991. If that's what you like go for it. Personally I could never go back to a 997 after owning a 991.2 with the twin turbo.

Ready to buy a used Porsche and my choices are 200) Porsche 911 Turbo in absolutely mint condition for $62K, or a 2015 911 Carrera S for $66k. The 2015 does not have the chrono package. Can you provide your opinion on which car you would buy 😃😃 TY !

Love the video, but hate the music. But as far as the cars are concerned. In my opinion the 991 is getting away from what a 911 is supposed to be. It has gotten to big and refined, but still has a really small back seat. I don't see the reason for the car to exist. You can get the same feel with a Panamera and get a useable back seat. The 997 is smaller, lighter and a better handling car. It is what a 911 is supposed to be.

911Percent Thanks Jakob. It is tough. In reality they are both good cars. And the question of which car is better is a whole different conversation. But I do prefer the 997 for the type of driving I do. It we were talking about a daily driver it would be the 991 for sure. 👍 see ya soon.
