Porsche 911 Battle of the 991.1 and 997.2 - which is best? Episode 13 Diary of a Porsche Specialist

With the arrival (and sale) of my first 991 series Porsche 911, I wanted to compare it to the 997 gen 2, both are now priced in the same bracket, so I am sure many people who are buying are considering both. Find out how they drive and how they are physically different in this video!
The 991 Gen 1 is a 2012 Carrera S 3.8 PDK Coupe, the 997 Gen 2 is a 2010 Carrera 4S 3.8 PDK. Both are equipped with PASM, PSE Sports Exhaust, Sport Chrono Package Plus and the Sport Design Steering Wheel. Both are also finished in Basalt Black metallic with extended Black Leather.

    Considered the 991.1 temporarily for financing reasons until I decided to go for a 2010 C2S about 3 months ago. It was a simple choice between the two- the 997 is the right size for a 911. I just liked how simplistic it felt- the instrument cluster felt classic German; reminiscent of a 90s Vauxhall/Opel I had back in Uni. Stepping into a 911 for the first time ever, I didnt have to relearn anything; nothing counter intuitive, visceral, analog and nothing that was out of place. I had to pinch myself as it felt like it was a dream sitting in a 911.

    Excellent comparison, you have identified the key differences perfectly. Personally I prefer the nimble, sporty playfulness of the 997 to the grown-up competence of the 991. In fact, I suspect that the 992 has had some of that lost responsiveness tuned back in. Unfortunately of course, the 992 is even bigger again!

    I’ve owned a 997.1 S and now have 991.1 base. Excellent comparison. Another big difference is the NVH is so much better w/ the 991. It’s much quieter on the highway, much better over rough roads (sound and ride). Tire wear (especially in the rear) is much better. Never feels like it wants to kill you like the 997 S would when it hits 4k ;-). Different - yes, better - mostly yes.

    Great vid! I have an old 997.1 and agree that the 997 in general is a much more old school 911.... arguably the last of the analogue versions, but I would say that as I couldn’t justify a 991 🙂

    Really enjoyed this comparison , the best I have seen. I love the modern up to date style of the 991, but something is really compelling about the old school 997.2 if you get a good one eg 997.2 C4S.

    Thanks Raj, how much would you say a 2009 997.2 C4S manual would be worth above a PDK ? any thoughts, they are quite hard to find , there were not too many made. Any idea ?

    The sound that Porsche developed in 2012 for their cars was incredible. This is one thing that I miss on my 987.2S. But this is the fun of progressing through their lineup, there is more, and more, and more!

    I am very happy with my 2010 997.2 Manual Transmission. With the Shark Werk exhaust, it sounds louder and also adds about 11hp making it 355 - 358hp. For me, to drive around the city, with my Radar/Laser detector ON (Uniden R3), I most often go way beyond speed limits but safe. I know, we all do :-) that is the fun part. I am waiting to take it to the Atlanta Porsche Experience center and take my own car to the track and then use one of their similar cars. I was about to go this Sept 4th, but, now it would be the first Sunday of October. I have to get my car inspected for track by a Porsche dealer and submit within 48 hours before track date.

    I love your videos Raj. I’m hoping to pick up an 08 997.2 c2s this Saturday if everything checks out. It’s going into the workshop today for its pre sale check and MOT. Fingers crossed. It’s arctic silver which wasn’t my top choice but 65000miles, sport plus, full electric seats plus a lot more seems like a good spec for the money. Your videos have been so helpful in leading up to my purchase. I do visit your site of course but as you understand you have to grab these when you can. Maybe we will cross paths if I trade later

    Thanks for your comments, the 996 Turbo is a gem, in my opinion it is a similar leap between the 996 TT to the 997, more feedback and more work for the driver, however extremely rewarding. Daily driving is possible but through winter it is less habitable, manual boxes can be clunky from cold (so is the 997 though!). The power delivery when on boost is addictive, the responsiveness below is understandably lacking vs the normally aspirated 997.2 or 991.1 - as expected. However they still make an awesome drive and well worth considering too in the price bracket. Hope this helps! When I next get one I'll do a video vs a 997.2. Cheers, Raj

    I have a 2010 997.2 manual. I’m lucky to be able to effort the 991 (or the 992) but the 997 has somthing (character?) that the other don't have, so I keep the 997.

    I have a 997.1 C2S and looking to change to a 997.2 C4, but I’m wandering can I connect my phone for audio via AUX or USB on the 997.2 car hifi? On my 997.1 Bluetooth audio was not available from factory, and there’s no cable inputs.

    Hi JazzRagu, you can, as long as the car was optioned with Universal Audio Interface and Bluetooth Phone Prep. This gives you wired audio for music and wireless phone connectivity. However, with a £35 device, you can get bluetooth music (wireless).Thanks,Raj

    Good evening Jason, thank you for the great comments and feedback. I would say the 991 in any guise is a super daily driver, they handle miles very well, are extremely comfortable also. These non turbo 3.8 dfi cars (997.2 and 991.1) are much more reliable than the earlier 997.1, 996 and also arguably the 991.2 as well - due to the turbos seals causing issues later in life.     997 and 991 are the most beautiful 911s in my opinion. The destroyed the harmonic looks with the "edgy" design of the 992.

    Hi Raj, I've been watching your videos for the past couple of days. Very informative. I just found a 2011 4s Cab manual with 50k miles - in beautiful aqua blue. This one is Porsche certified one owner with all service records to date. Price is actually higher than 991.1 base. Perhaps that's an apples to oranges comparison. If I buy it, I plan to keep it for a while and trade in my 718 Boxter PDK base. I've seen in your other videos that the 997.2 engines may actually be more reliable and last longer than 991.1 or 991.2 (with the turbos). Any red flags with the 997.2 4s cab that you can point out? Your videos are fantastic. thanks for your thoughts.

    Thanks Ben for the comments, apples and oranges indeed. a 991 C4S cab would be much more than a 997.2 C4S cab! Sure the series overlap, but like for like are not similarly priced right now (at least yet). The C2S are probably closest of them all. No major red flags, just usual Porsche stuff to look out for on cars of that era, you can see those mentioned in some of my other videos. 991.2 are not my speciality at the moment, I avoid them because of the smaller turbo charged engines, same as the 718s too.     Nice review Raj, I have a 2012 997.2 which is a transition year... could have been either a 997.2 or a 991.1 depending on build date. The production date on my car is September of 2011 (9/11). Only has 18500 miles, need to drive it more lol

    Great information. Thanks. I’m considering 2009 manual Targa 4s or a certified 2014 911 cab. I feel as though the certified 911 is the safer option and it may last longer and might have less repair issues . But the 997.2 is not only a manual 4s but also a Targa - much more rare. It has about 50k miles. Would appreciate any thoughts. Many thanks.

    Hi Ben, the repair bills for recommissioning work due to age related is likely to be higher for the 997.2 vs the 991, at least for the next few years, but the 991 will at some point also need some pipework replacing etc. The Targa 4S manual is a very rare Porsche, I've had one before. I have a 997.2 PDK Targa 4S with just under 50k miles due in next week, I am very excited about that! Cheers, Raj

    Great vid but it left me with one of the same questions I've been battling with for some time now, 997.2 or E46 M3? Can't have both, which do you choose for a weekend fun car and occasional track day car. I'm pretty sure I spy an e46 M3 in the background of the final comparison. I have an e46 M3 and want a Porsche, however I fear I'll regret selling it to get the Porsche. Talk some sense into me one way or the other please!!!

    Both are exceptional at what they do! I find owners are very different, M owners don't generally get the 911 way of driving from my experience, plus the M cars are at a much lower price point like for like. The BMW was a M3 CSL in silver-grey, fantastic example! Cheers, Raj

However, the 3.6 blocks are less prone to these issues. I’d personally enjoy it and just save a bit on the side in case an issue arises a few years down the line. My car's exhaust is so clean, and I always watch and expect a puff of blue smoke at cold start up but absolutely nothing, it really is a great running engine, fingers crossed I have a good one!! 🙏👍

    997 is a better design to me and when I change my 996.2 I will have enough money to buy either but I will be going for a very low mileage 997.2 not the 991.1. I just prefer the stance and design of the 997 and smaller car.

    Minus some dings on looks and steering, the 991.1 seems like possibly one of the best 911s in the modern age. I do not like 991.2 and 992. Prices should continue to come down in the coming years so there is no urgency on buying one, unlike the 997 where it might be bottomed out. I am waiting on a good 991. The 997 is still a bit risky on a couple mechanical issues.

    The 997 has the more beautiful shape of chassis - in particular the rear is much nicer. It has a much better chance of becoming a classic.

    The 991 feels more refined because its the new car, what happens when you compare 997, 991 and 992 together. Would the appeal of the 991 be lost?

    Definitely not. The 991.1 was the last naturally-aspirated flat-6 carrera. The turbo-charged later 991.2 and 992 don’t compare (in my opinion!). Thanks! Raj

    Porsche was always - since 1948 - all about a nimble little lightweight sports car - and not the battle shop sized cars they are doing today. If you find a mint condition 997.2 4S and install the X51 power kit you will have all the Porsche you will ever need and want in your life time. Do not purchase the car to make a profit but to enjoy the experience of a manual naturally aspirated drivers car. You can buy a new one, but it will never give you the core experience of what a real 911 was all about from the very beginning. These cars will increase dramatically in value over the coming decade and become exceedingly difficult to find. You will get so much driving pleasure and you will literally never want to sell your car. It might be a serious investment, but if you will never sell the car , just how expensive is it really ? One day or day one. Your move. Period.

    Hi Jeppe, I love your summary of what makes the older Porsche so special versus the newer examples. I can totally relate to it and it seems the buyers out there are demanding those 997.2 or older right now more than ever. Best time to always buy is now, as long as you can afford it! Cheers, Raj

    Thanks D S! The rattles you can hear could be my sound equipment more than the car, but yes in general the older the cars get the more rattles can appear, some suffer more than others, depending on whether door cards or dashes have had to be taken apart over the years or not. I find some buyers are very sensitive to rattles and others much more understanding of a cars sounds, as long as they can still hear the flat six and stereo! Cheers, Raj

    @abdul ali look for a 997.2. Pretty sure porsche fixed the issue around 08-09. Also, Turbo & GT models did not have the ims problem.

    Simple truth about 997 vs 991: 997 feels more like a sports car (ie a 911), the 991 feels like more of a GT car. Only the GT3 991s begin to feel more like sports cars again (albeit they begin to tread into supercar territory).

    I don't think you reviewed a 997.2, it's suppose to have the PDK, your car has the tiptronic crappy gear shifter.

    Thanks Michael, the static car I used was a Gen 1.5 Turbo, as the Gen 2 Carrera 4S PDK had already sold and I didn't have another in the premises, so yes the static comparison shows a Tiptronic box car, but with the Gen 2 dashboard and PCM. The driving part of the review was all Gen 2 PDK, not Gen 1 Tiptronic. Sorry for the confusion, hope this clarifies. Raj

    997 all the way ...less is more after the 997 the911 became a touring car to sell to the masses...also your steering wheel is on the wrong side!!

    Thanks for the comment, this is comparing a 997.2 and 991.1. The static comparison is with a Gen 1.5 Turbo, which has the gen 1 Tiptronic and 997.2 electronics console. Cheers, Raj
