    Got a Jones Frontier W158 with Burton Cartel bindings last week for my quite big feet (29 monopoint) and can't wait to try it. Given my quite long research for an all mountain board that is a little more freeride focused this should be one of the best boards on the market for a reasonable price. I'll report when I got to test it. Love your videos. Choosing the boots was a pita as my right foot is about 1cm longer and unfortunately this is my back foot on the board. So I had to try out a lot of boots and ended up getting very stiff ones as they support shifting your toes a little more to the center when you're in a slight bent knee position. I even considered buying to pairs in different sizes but there would have been little hope to find anybody that needs two different sizes the opposite way around.

    I'm 6'6" with size 13 UK feet, I ride a Burton custom 172 wide (265mm waist). It is a bit of a big beast but it does mean no toe drag and it's awesome in powder. Worth mentioning that people who need wide boards are generally big guys with more powerful legs so it's not the same as if my 5'6" wife was trying to ride it as she might struggle!!

    Totally agree- I've bought and sold a lot of snowboards over the years, thought I've been OK on regular boards after using them at a dome only to boot out on a proper hill. Wide boards are an absolute must for me now (UK 11) and of course, they are far superior at carrying any personal investment into Burritos and Guinness Currently riding GNU/Lib quiver - all wides, having found them a bit more playful and relaxed than my Jones (wide) kit

    Bindings also matter! Some bindings have a lot going on in the heel side! A more sleek bindings would allow you to position it further back on the board, creating more room for the toes.

    Yeah I bet, that's awesome. All the main board companies are too scared to put beginners off so make narrow boards that are easy to change edge on, but really when you have the basics down, the benefits of a wide board can be awesome! At least now we are seeing boards like the warping and party platter that are slightly bucking that trend!

    Wide boards may work great for carving and shorter sizes in pow, but try those bad boys in tight trees or moguls. Remember people it's relative to your riding style individually rather than just thinking these recommendations are true for every type of terrain.

    One tip that I don't see mentioned anywhere is about the bindings. I've notices some bindings like the burton cartel lift the toes higher up. This also reduces toe drag a lot. The higher your boot over the edge, the more you can lean. I'm also struggling with bootouts myself because I'm quite short and light but with big feet so I'm putting together a setup with some bindings that seem to lift your boots a bit higher up rather than being flat on the board. All the tips here in this clip are great as well.

    very late to this video, but you're mentioning "demoing" your board. I got really lucky when I started, because I got first misinformed by a shop, and then eventually got well informed by a shop in the ski area, and those people where super friendly and knew I was a beginner, and therefore gave me some really good boards to try out. They even came with me on piste, to help me get my first good turns, give me tips, so basically a day of free lessons and they paid attention to not only size, but also where I felt comfortable on. Is the board a board you have a good feeling about, where you feel confident on, all those things, and I eventually ended up buying my board, what I still use today, with them, with the binding and all, simply because it was just so good. They never pushed for the expensive ones or whatever, but really cared for what was good for me or their customers in general, what was just perfect.

I do have my back foot at 0 degrees. Anyhow reluctant to replace the board but it probably does need replacing. The sidecut was different to others at the time by having a shorter effective length for the main sidecut radius -the widest points at each end were brought towards each other. I have found the board manouvrable and great all round (more so than the 168 Burton canyon I had before) but I am a tall heavy-ish rider (6'5" and 92-102kg varying!). Volume shifted sounds like a similar idea.

    To be honest I've never paid too much attention to it either and just go with what's comfortable for me. I dont panic too much either about getting it exactly the same on each board. When switching over to a new board I normally just put the bindings in and have found that the gap between my bindings should be roughly the length of from my elbow to my knuckles in my hand (not the centre of the bindings but the inside edge). I know this isn't very exact but usually it works fine. If something feels out I'll know after a run and then I can tweak it. Everybody's bodies are aligned differently so I believe it's about finding what's right for you. That said though it can be fun to play around with it a little and different stances do work better on different boards. On a cam rockered or flat base board like my war pig for instance I will sometimes put my feet a little wider to help spread my weight along the whole edge of the board. Whereas on a cambered board you can go a little narrower as the camber will do alot of this work for you. And then a wider stance can help with balance and landings in freestyle tricks, whilst a narrow stance can be good fun to carve with, but again it's all personal preference! 👍

Wanting something more playful yet can still be good to progress with. My boot size is 10.5 -11 US. Mondo is 28.5 so I’m trying in boots now. I have to order all of it due to no local shops near me. Weight is 179lbs. Height is 6’3”. Really getting a lot of different views on it. I don’t really want a wide but want something I can use for a while. I wouldn't recommend union forces 😂 nah, I mean alot of people love them but I am not a fan. In my experience the straps always come loose and it us really annoying. But if that doesn't bother you, and some people say it never happens to them so maybe I've just been unlucky, then they do ride really nicely. I would double check their size chart but would imagine you'll be a large. Same goes for the board really, they'll have a weight chart there too so just see where you fit. If it's the choice of a few sizes decide what you more want the board for. Bugger means better in powder and when charging, smaller will be slightly better for jibbing around and freestyle. If you don't want a wide then don't get one, just don't be annoyed if you start booting out on the slopes!

    If your boots fit the M binding best then go for that and then you can decide whether you want the wide or not. It's not going to be a necessity for you but I would probably go for the wide. It's only 5mm to be honest so you probably won't notice the difference anyway, but because your feet are slightly bigger than average it'll mean toe drag on steeper runs is less likely. But either will work so don't stress!

  • @malcolmmoore

    @malcolmmoore

    4 жыл бұрын

    For riding on a piste I would go with the weight recommendations the manufacturers give for any given board. But for powder yes, you will definitely benefit from a longer board. 220lbs on a short board will be difficult to keep the nose up, even if it is a volume shifted board like the Warpig or party platter. Obviously nothing beats riding powder than a powder board, so it's a case of finding the board that ticks your preferences all mtn boards are generally a good solution to just having one board. But if your preference is more towards powder go for the higher end that it recommends for your weight. The trade off being slightly less good in the park and less nimble in tight spots. If you are a strong rider though you won't find a bigger board any more work, that is generally the reason why I end up with bigger boards!

    Just for reference we should really talk in mondo sizes as shoe sizes are very varied. Did think about Ryan Knapton, but then thought he almost always ride on groomers doing those beautiful carving, where local resort I'm around doesn't have that luxury, so often variable snow condition, chunder and icy, then slushy during spring... wider board, potentially less nimble and quick in engaging the edge, would it be a bit risky for me? Hi Malcolm, hope you've had a nice xmas & keeping busy. Super useful to break down the board sizes like that. I actually have a question about your bindings in this video- what model are they? I can see they are union and I assume they are a L with your shoe size. Even with a wide board like yours, the bindings almost go to the edges if not touch. As we don't want binding overhang, does this mean you need a wide board for large bindings? The board I'm looking at is 256mm; I'm a size 10 which is in between medium and large bindings for most brands so I'm wondering how your foot centres up in the binding and then on the board... as you are wearing 10.5 Burtons I guess this would be the footprint of a 10 in other brands, which is the smaller end of a large binding.

  • @malcolmmoore

    @malcolmmoore

    Yeah these were unions but I now use burtons, I am at the smaller end of the larger biding but you can slide the toebed back to prevent overhang on narrower boards, but this was something that I was close to with the unions, getting binding overhang as you say

    @@malcolmmoore Hey, so another question. Is toe drag as much an issue when riding in Pow than on piste? When using slam back inserts, your front foot is on a narrower part of the board so you would expect more overhang. You might counter this with more freeride binding angle (or not) but in the end does it matter as much? Or is that the wrong way round and overhang is worse to have in pow?

    Yeah you could definitely go smaller particularly with the volume shifted boards. Both boards seem quite large for you considering you're a beginner. But also we're only talking a little but so you could definitely make them work. On the 159 270mm is pretty wide. Whilst I love that for carving etc it can be a little tricky for beginners. I would say with your size feet you probably want around 260mm and maybe up to about 265 or so as you start to get more advanced. So for right now the 162 might be the better option, although yes, maybe it is a little long for you. But either of those board with a more softer forgiving flex could still definitely work for a beginner. Boards are just much shorter and easier to ride these days. My first board was a 164 that was really stiff. It wasn't the best but you'll still manage! Having a board far too small is more of a problem!

  • @thomasfiorelli1228

    Geat vid, exactly what I was looking for. I'm 178cm and my weight is about 72-73kg; unfortunately i have big feet (I don't know my snowboard boot size yet but I guess it'll be around size 12US since I normally wear size 45EU) so i don't know exactly what snowboard size I should get. After a lot of research and reviews, since I am a beginner to intermediate rider, I am planning to buy the Yes Basic 156 Wide (actually it s more of a mid wide with its 25,9cm waist width) but I am not sure it would fit me properly. Another problem is that the yes basic has also the underbite sidecut (to give you a better grip on the ice). So, would be a 156W (25,9 waist width) enough for a size 12US boot? Obviously planning to buy a boot with the best reduced footprint I can find to minimize this issue, yet I am still concerned. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

    The undeebite should help a bit yes, if you're not putting the board on too much of an edge angle you'll be fine, but it's something you'll need to keep an eye on as you improve!

    Hi Malcolm, This may not be pertainant to this video and I apologise in advance but would like to seek for your advice. I am an addict to snowboarding and became a nerd researching and watching too much review videos. That led me to being over zealous and excited that I ended up buying the YES Basic Decade on impulse as well as Lib Tech Orca. I am pretty much a 10-12 day experience snowboarder and bought the Decade on impulse when i know i probably can't ride it. My concerns are the FLEX of the Basic Decade as well as the 2-4-2 compared to the 4-4-4 that would be miles apart from my initial ride - 2013 YES Basic. How I would describe my level would be that I can now link turns in both directions (i.e. from my heel edge to my toe edge and my toe edge to my heel edge) on green (beginner) and intermediate (blue) slopes. My turns are now becoming "S" shape turns. I can now control my speed if I feel it’s uncomfortable. Went to Mt.Hotham and did okay okay on Blue-Intermediate runs except for flat cat tracks where i keep catching edge, and attempted a few blacks but was extremely slow and could not link turn smoothly without stopping on every turn. I've tried reaching out to the YES distributor to seek for any options for me to cancel my BASIC Decade Order and Swap for a YES Basic order, but because its a 2019 model and it was a special request they made to YES for me, they are unable to cancel the order. And likewise for the 2021 Lib tech orca. I definitely can't handle that. I am not sure what i should do now. Should I sell at a loss and get a board like the Ride Warpig or typo, or get the new Basic and continue with it. Hope you can advise please. Tks!

    Hi DPJ, I just had to do a bit of research on the YES Basic Decade as I'm not really familiar with it. The summary is I think you should just stick with what you have. The decade is going to be your go to board for most conditions and what you'll want to spend most your time on. Sure the reviews say it's more towards the advanced spectrum of the learning curve but it's not overly stiff that it'll be too difficult for you to learn on. It sounds like you understand where you want to be going with your riding so this board will actually give you more back in the long run, when you start riding faster and carving etc. I wouldn't worry about the camber profile it's really not going to actually feel that different. You're on a plank of wood and they don't differ all that much, I regularly switch between different profiles and they have a different feel but its not like swapping your car for a motorbike. The board will be less playful at slow speeds, and for doing little butters and jibs on the piste, but that is pretty much it's only downside. What's good about this board is that allow it is reasonably stiff tip to tail, looking at the construction of it, it looks to still have good tortional flex, in that you can peddle your feet to get the board to twist through the middle and make it easier to turn. So honestly, I would stick with it and I think you'll be fine, the amount of boards you can choose from these days can be intimidating, but it think this one will work for you. Don't put too much stock in all the review sites, if you read the reviews from the guys over at the good ride, just ignore it, I've watched alot of their videos and they really are not good riders. Moving onto the lib tech orca, this board will have a very different feel to it but it's going to be awesome board to take out in the powder but also super fun on the piste. I've just bought the salomon dancehaul, which is essentially their stab at tapping into the orca market, and I'm loving it so far. I would probably keep it on the shelf until you're at least carving reasonably well down blue runs. So by that I mean, you're changing edge before the fall line, holding your edge throughout the turn, but most importantly you're able to manipulate the turn radius to make small or large turns. The Decade will be the perfect howrd for learning these skills, and once you do it'll be pretty easy to jump on the orca and then ride that board how it's meant to be ridden! Phew! Long reply but hope that helps!

    Hello ! @Malcolm Moore Thank you so so so much for your prompt, detailed and professional advice. Essentially, you're saying that despite this board saying it is a flex or 7/10 (actual feel on snow could be more or less) and despite me being a med beginner or very very low intermediate, I'd still be able to ride this board? As I always thought and was taught that a beginner will get 'stunned' on his/her progression if they go for a stiff board which they haven't yet learn to control as well as torsionally, thus leading to bad fundamentals + catching edge and more... As for the LibTech Orca, understood. I will then keep them. Thanks for the advice. Lastly, I forgot to mention that I also won a 2020 Jones MT in a contest, and it seems to be on a similar level as the Basic Decade or could be softer. And since you recommended for me to keep the Basic Decade, should I sell the Jones MT? Thanks again! (p.s. oh, I got my reviews from snowboarding forums, google etc... not the goodride guys as I've come to learn from others to now listen to them...)

  • @malcolmmoore

    @@dpj9421 I have ridden the Jones mtn twin and it is a very capable board, when boards say all mountain, this board really can do everything and I really like it. It will probably be pretty similar to the yes but as I haven't ridden that one I can't say for sure. So you probably don't need both, so yeah maybe either send the yes back or sell the Jones, just keep the one you like the look of more! Yeah, with regards to catching an edge on stiffer boards, if you're not catching an edge when riding at the moment you won't suddenly start doing it on a stiffer board. The reason we don't recommend stiff boards to beginners though is that at very slow speeds they will require a bit more effort to turn, and you cant get away with bad technique as much. But as you are already turning I think you'll be fine, bear in mind that 90% of boards are only used 1 week a year and so even 'advanced' boards are these days generally ok for the rider who's only done a few weeks before and will only be doing 1 week each season.

    Thanks a lot for the advices @@malcolmmoore !!! I'll definitely figure it out. I was offered by my shop to be able to refund the Basic Decade and to purchase a regular Basic. Previously I was riding a 2013 Yes Basic board which I bought second hand and was catching edges on flat cat tracks quite a bit, so I am not sure if a stiffer board would make me catch an edge more in this case. Ahhh... thanks for the clarification on why stiffer boards aren't recommended for beginners as the reason is majority lies on slow speed turn that may harvest bad techniques... So my thoughts will be to just buy a new Basic Decade for my beginner/very low intermediate and progress till I am more comfortable before jumping onto Jones Mountain Twin. Or do you think I should be able to just straight hop onto the Jones Mountain twin as per my experience level mentioned in previous comments - making slow and steady S turns, not 100% second natured smoothness but can make S turns slowly in Green Blue and maybe Red runs. Tried Blacks with C turns only, and catching edges on Flat Cat Track terrains. Thanks again!

    They say for that one to size down 3 to 6cms, it's not quite as wide as the warpig that I use, so either the 151 or 154 will work fine. I would probably go for the 154. If jibbing around and spinning as much as possible of any small hits is more your thing then maybe the 151 is the better choice. But for all mountain riding and doing everything I would go for the 154. Just be aware this board is alot softer than the warpig that I've been using!

For someone who doesn't care too much about high performance carving, and is more focused on freestyle and jibbing, would you still feel the same?
