Do I Need A Knee Replacement

Knee arthritis affects millions. Many people are told they need a knee replacement. Do you? This decision is up to you. We treat people, not x-rays. Your x-rays alone do not determine if the proper treatment for you is a knee replacement. This decision should take place after a long discussion including your symptoms, your story, your goals, your expectations, as well as your exam findings.

Interesting take on knee replacement - 'quality of life' rather than what the x-ray says. A refreshing approach.

Thank you Dr. Luke’s, I had a left total knee replacement last June. Before I could not walk without pain ( pain in not only my knee but ankle and hip because I was limping) . My R knee is also bone on bone but not this much severe like left one , I will try” gel shots “ and I can see if this will help me . I’m still professionally active and my job requires to be 99.9% on my legs. I completely agree that exercise is a crucial part to improve your movement and function on the daily basis. Also diet, pay attention what you are eating and control your weight as well. Thank you , stay strong and healthy!!👍

Hello Dr. Lux, I enjoyed your video. The video is a few years old and with technology advancements every year has your view on knee replacement changed any? Also can you advise if you feel prior to deciding on knee replacement surgery, is working out with weights better to support the knee and possibly reduce knee pain than the treadmill or stepper machine? Thank you very much for your time and advice.

Great information, thank you. I had arthroscopic surgery because I had meniscus tears and they were catching and causing me a lot of pain, swelling. I tried all the noninvasive treatments for over 6 months with no improvements. Unfortunately the Dr said I also have 8/10 arthritis in my knee and scope may not help. 1 1/2 years later and I’m doing fine. Vast improvement, not perfect, but I can do everything I want and can hopefully put off TKR for a while.

Brilliant information. I'm certainly gonna wait. I feel I can control the pain in my knees with the help of injections. Painkillers and definitely exercises my physio told me to do. Have noticed a great difference So thank you

Many thanks indeed for honest discussion. Any chance of a comment, please, for me? Especially becoz I have no chronic knee pain, no swelling etc at any time. Only that a few months ago, knee collapses & a 'lock' for 10 days. No pain since. X-ray shows 'severe bone deterioration' I have managed the osteoarthritis over a decade. At 86, not enthusiastic about long painful op recovery! But also avoiding falls with an op? Frying pan into the fire!? Medics ( U.K.) shy away from comment or guidance. Please ?

hello, can i ask a question regarding Achilles repair? i have bone spurs in both heels that i was in the process of getting repaired via surgery but ended up rupturing my right achilles in the process. when i asked if my orthopedic surgeon can do both the tendon and spur repair he said no and that the spur has to be done by podiatry. so now i'm waiting to be able to put weight on my right foot so i can at least get the left spur done by late december, early january 2019. do you think that's enough healing time to get the heel spur on the opposite foot done? the heel spurs have given me pain for over 5 years and i really want to get it done before my insurance runs out. also, CAN an orthopedic doctor repair both the spur and tendon? not sure why the whole dept declined to do both surgeries. thanks for your time.

Hello. I have a question regurding my collarbone. Not the end that goes to my shoulder, but the end that is closer to my chest sticks out. I notice scince yesterday my shoulder feels like it takes more work to constantly move my arm. It doesnt not hurt but it does not feel normal and I do have sone discomfort. Also i can push that part of my bone inward and outward while my other collarbone does not do that. Why do you think this is? Is there anything I can do?
