Pointing out that "not every person lives to work" is really important. A lot of people simply cannot fathom having a "dream job". This doesn't mean that they lack ambition or they have a bad work ethic, it's just that they get fulfilment from other places. I remember asking my high school chemistry teacher why she left her prestigious job at a pharmaceutical company and she said that she wanted a change of scenery. In fact, she later revealed that she studied chemistry in college just because she wanted to, but it wasn't her "passion"... she loved biology and business just as much. Don't get too worried about finding your "passion". It will put a lot of unnecessary stress on you when you're in your early 20s.

I went into restaurants out of high school, started got up to management. I LOVE it, even tho I just fell into it. Also, if you're into the medical field, get certified as a CNA. As a dude, you'll get hired IMMEDIATELY, and generally your employer (like a hospital) will pay for you to get additional training and certifications.

Yes definitely look into debt forgiveness and talk to the college dean and counselor. If you have valid excuses they will work with you. Plus with your parents getting a divorce should allow you to apply for FAFSA student grants (not loans, don't ever take out loans if you can). I had some issues with my college when my parents were going through a divorce and I didn't think I was going to graduate. But I had help and support from friends, my mom, and the college staff and I was able to get an associate's degree and currently working on my bachelor's degree in graphic design and I owe ZERO dollars in student loans because I found all sorts of ways to get my school paid for through grants and scholarships. Though I am currently working in retail, that is just to have money to survive. I plan to apply for some internships in graphic design so that way I can get an entry level job in that field after I graduate in a year or so. The lesson here is ask for as much help as you can from the people that have the power to help and avoid student loans as much as possible.

As someone who just graduated, I say go back to school but do it intelligently. I went to community college right out of high school and dropped out after a year because I couldn't handle it and the stress of things going on in my life. It took another year of working low end jobs to actually figure out that I wanted to go back. I did a shit load of research on 4-year public colleges to find one that was lower in cost and offered a good teaching style. Yeah, I've got a chunk of debt from it, but it's done and I grew up so much more than I did cleaning toilets. There are several programs out there for low income students back into school, and once you do get in your current loan repayment will be put on hold and can eventually be refinanced into something better. Moral of the story: go to college if you have the chance, but do your research on it. I went to a college that everyone makes fun of for being a hippy school and ended up studying master's level business theories.

My issue is that I can never seem to get through two semesters back to back. I have only ever completed fall semesters at each college I've attended. Something always happens during spring semester and I can't finish (or it's not worth applying for spring). However, when I see that inevitable coming, I withdraw to save my GPA. I still did badly in math though in the fall semesters and thus need the basic math course before I can take the higher classes, but I actually made dean's list at my technical college for Office Administration. I think I also want to go to school for software engineering...so long as it doesn't require a heavy amount of math (wish I had sharper writing skills since I love words way more than numbers. But an English degree would be expensive and long. I've so far managed to avoid student loans with pell grants and would like to continue doing so...)

Without watching this video before giving you all advice, I gotta say that getting a college degree doesn't necessarily mean you will get a high paying job. However, you should get a college degree. Why? It seems like most job postings require you to either have a H.S. Diploma and 1 to 3 years of experience OR a college degree and some (usually 1 year) experience in x thing the job is about. It sucks because I was sold the idea that if I got a college degree I would be able to get a nice job that paid better and that hasn't been completely true. I haven't had a minimum wage job, but I don't have a really great pay either. Heck, I haven't even used my degree. My jobs have had nothing to do with my major. So my suggestion for you is to go to College (get an Associates Degree at least, but a Bachelor's is better) and GET AN INTERNSHIP AS SOON AS YOU CAN. I cannot stress the last point enough. That will be the experience companies these days ask for. I didn't get an internship while I was pursuing my degree and now I regret it. Seriously, you should get at least one, it doesn't matter if it doesn't pay much. Also, network with people in the field you want to work in. Whether it's your classmates in the same major, or your TEACHERS that can give you a letter of recommendation later. People whom you know actually work in that field are also great. Just get to know people. End of advice. I hope it helps someone.

I have to disagree with you on the networking job. While you don't NEED a degree, to go beyond a bottom tier worker, you'll need one. It's not a job you can just get right out of high school and be making $50k+. A better suggestion would be to look at a trade: electrician, plumber, etc. Many of these have, as part of the apprenticeship program, a kind of "college" built in. But I do agree that if college is something you want to pursue, it's still possible. I got let go from my engineering program a few times due to failing grades but I explained the circumstances to the dean as well as my advisers and set out a course of action to help me (counseling, regular check-ins, etc). The college/university has a lot of resources and you'll never know about them unless you ask. Talk to the dean of your school, your adviser, etc. They're there to help you succeed, they don't want to see you fail.

As someone who's a year and a half away from turning 30, I still have no idea what I want to do with my life. I tried the college thing, and it's not for me. Maybe if I went right out of high school instead of waiting so long, but who knows. At least I have a job, though. Also in retail. Not the best, but it gets me out of the apartment for a few hours...

Rainbow Reading I didn't go to college right out of high school either. I went straight into working full-time. After working for 3 1/2 years, I decided that I had enough of doing something that I hated doing and decided to try college. I am about two semesters away from graduating community college since my high school GPA sucked. I plan on attending a 4 year university and getting my bachelors degree and maybe even my masters. I am going for what I love, instead of going for something that would give me a lot of money and a great job.

I'm starting to look at colleges again. Because I have so many interests, I weeded out the ones that I only wanted to do because they look "cool" on TV (like forensics, lol). Since I love animals more than people most days, I'm looking into something veterinary.

Sorry Matt but your solution is not very realistic. Its hard enough for someone to find a job with a college degree more the less with nothing! Not only will employers not want to hire someone with only a hs diploma but those jobs that you mentioned that are "high paid" not everyone will have even the slightest of interest in them. And any other job you could get you will be very underpaid because of your lack of education. So unless you want to make life very hard/stressful for yourself or have to be forced to get a job you dont have an interest in, and get underpaid, and last but not least might be forced to flip burgers for a living if you cant find one of those "high paid" jobs then dont get a college degree and live that unhappy life. Its pretty stupid not to if you have the means and the funds to do so. My friend isnt going to college and he is gonna flip patties for the rest of his life.

DubsOddysee Ya and a lot of those people have created their own business. And if you arent going to do that good luck. And for those who do have a degree there are a lot of degrees that wont do you too well. But if you get a good degree then you can do fine. A good degree could be like in engineering and a not so good degree could be in religious studies.
