Really like the effort you put into your vids in explaining how Toyota engines work & from all your years of experience working on them...not just relaying something you heard from a mates mate Robbo who has a neighbour that swears by catch cans but has never seen the inside of an engine

Great information as usual. Why you say don't unscrew the built in filter... Surely no harm done in cleaning out possible sludge build up?

Would these apply to the 2GDs of the new hilux/forty? So these fancy provents are actually detrimental and won't extend the life of the engine?

Modern diesel engines are like toilets, they are great; you just have to give them a good cleaning every now and then. The pros certainly exceed the cons.

Great vid! Makes sense about restricting the output from the crankcase.. I was going to fully block my EGR but the 7mm hole plate sounds good, what would the major difference be between the 7mm and a fully blocked plate, the fully blocked system would be better yes?

Probably their crappy Engines burn oil and they need to catch it and put it back into the sump

@@Fourby4Diesel Hmmm, not quite the knowledgeable answer I was hoping for. You clearly state that your recommendations are just your opinion but from the comments, a lot of people take what you say as gospel. I have a brand new Sahara and yes I fitted a ProVent, which I would rather not have done, but I purchased it after doing a lot of googling and YouTubing. I bought the passenger side kit which has short, pre shaped hoses. I listened to your reasoning why not to fit one and they manly centred on the “can” causing other problems like blowing seals because of blocked filters or the hoses being too restrictive or the hoses being poorly fitted and rubbing on other components. These are fair arguments but nothing on a car is maintenance free. If installed properly and regularly maintained, with the filter changed as per the recommended interval then the “can” should last the life of the car. That cheap, flimsy, some kind of plastic you mentioned is actually a high quality fibre reinforced polymer used throughout the car industry. Yes, some build up may not be a problem but you don’t have to look far on YT to see vehicles in Australia with engine intakes being manually cleaned of enough gunk to clog the intake to the point of effecting the engine performance and fuel economy. Ok, if your car is doing a lot of highway work or towing then you may not ever need to clean the intake and a catch can won’t be necessary but for those of us with only one car that does all the short trips and city driving then it’s going to happen. Yourself and John Cadogan are the only two people that I have been able to find that have said not to fit one where as other mechanics, that I hold in high regard, such as Scotty Kilmer and Berrima Diesel to name a couple regard them as essential. I bought one as very cheap insurance and the way mine is set up it really looks OEM. At the first service I spoke to the Toyota mechanic and they had no problem with the “can” being fitted as far as warranty goes and when I asked him if I needed one he was a little cautious and said it wouldn’t hurt. I asked if he would fit one to his car and he said if it was a diesel then probably. Anyway that’s my 2cents worth. Cheers Stuart.
