Do I have a BURNOUT?

Do I have a BURNOUT? The last year has been pretty mental. Loads of work, a renovation in the house, and then I got covid. In this video I explain a bit more about this hectic time... my mind can't keep up.

Succes!

Dear Jessica, I do not know if you have a burn-out, but I can tell you that I had one 2 years ago, and what you seem to feel at the moment is exactly what I felt at that time. First, congratulations for your courage to speak up about this, because it is not easy and the tone of your voice shows you are experiencing a hard time. In my case, I was feeling guilty of letting everyone else down - coworkers, family, etc. Second, experiencing a burn-out is not the sign that you are weak. It is the sign that you are committed, you take care of what you do and of the people who count on you, and that this is at the expense of YOUR well-being. Focusing on our own well-being is not something we learn in school, instead we are expected to do what we are told. But if you are not functioning properly, and that includes the mental, you can't go on like that forever. Have you noticed that in airplanes the instructions says "put on your own oxygen mask before helping others" ? Most likely it is time for you to press the pause button. In my case, I started mindfulness meditation and it helped a lot because it pauses the mental loops that are spinning endlessly. A nurse also gave me a good advice, it was going to Intertoys and buy a couple of big lego sets, because building a big lego by following instructions helps you learn how to focus again, and that is something you do for yourself. And for the bike... Just go out and cycle from time to time. No work to do, no special route, no videos, nothing to post on youtube or instragram. Cycle to the next city which is far enough, and come back home by train. And enjoy your day :-) Take care Jessica, all the best.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I have been here before and yes, sometimes it is hard to focus on our own well-being. I am really slowing down at the moment, also forced myself to go on a real holiday. No deadlines, no commitments. It is not easy to relax, my mind is sooo occupied, but I am surrounded by nature and that helps. I might start yoga again. Also went on a bike trip for two weeks, with some work, but not too much. It will take time. Many people are suffering from burn outs at the moment, the pandemic didn’t help, and yes, pressing the pause button once in a while is a very good thing to do. Take care as well ❤️ .

It’s great to see you back. Your videos have helped me get through my own burnout and inspired me to get out on my bike and see more places. As you know, cycling is great therapy and your videos have also been great therapy. Thanks for that. I’m sure you’ve inspired many others also. Look after yourself and take things as slowly as you can. Covid can hang around for quite a while after you think your better…but it does ease and eventually go completely for the majority of people. Looking forward to your videos and your new channel when you’re ready.

Wow Gordon, this is great to hear, my biggest wish is to inspire other people to jump on their bike. And now you inspire me to do the same, jump on my bike. :) Last week I actually joined a bike & barge trip and I had a lovely group, mostly Americans, who gave me so much positive energy. I was filming and making photos, but it felt different - way more relaxed. I guess because I tried to ‘turn off’ once in a while, and fully enjoy. Thanks for watching my videos!

Great you are sharing your story in a direct, unfiltered way. My burnout was and is a great teacher, a guide to a life which is more aligned with with a deeper me. I am very grateful for that. From that perspective our society looks caught up in the things I have been caught up in. And at times still am. There is an awareness however which keeps me much more clear than before.

Sorry to hear you had a burnout. I guess it’s part of our society, sometimes we get caught up in things that shouldn’t matter that much. It’s good to do a step back once in a while.

Maybe you have to take each thing in turn, do less, choose what you like best, lower your expectations, slow down, put things in perspective... and do a bike trip :-)

Great advice, all true. At the moment I am trying to do less and yes, lower my expectations, which is really hard - but if I stop being so criticial, my work might even improve ;). I just got back from a bike & barge trip with some great people and this summer I definitely will do some more beautiful bike trips. Last thing: choose.

Sounds like the brain fog they talk about , séquelae or long Covid following a Covid infection. Lots of clinics set up in the uk to deal with it . Choosing colours to paint rooms can be an absolute nightmare ; choose a daring colour and repent a leisure.

Ha, thanks for saying it IS hard to choose colours. Sometimes I probably think more about what other people might say when they see it, strangely enough… The brain fog is also a fibromyalgia-thing, but it definitely got worse since covid. I sometimes use the wrong words for example, also in my videos. Today I really felt I’d like to read a book, that is a good start!
