Super late to the party, but FYI sand fleas aren't fleas, they're tiny immature barrel-shaped crabs that live in the sand along the waterline and jump like fleas when disturbed. They are harmless, and they grow to be about as big as a small shrimp. As a kid we used to find their holes by the bubbles and try to dig them up before they could dig themselves deeper and get away. On the other hand, you have sea LICE, which is just the term for microscopic baby jellyfish that give you an itchy rash when you swim in tropical waters during the summer.

Fun fact: Horseshoe crabs are in the same subphylum as spiders, Cheilcerata. This makes horseshoe crabs more closely related to spiders than they are even to other crabs. Like spiders, horseshoe crabs do not have a mandible and instead have chelicerae in front of their mouth parts.

They do their research about the area in which they are searching for animals, and attempt to learn about what dangers each one can pose to them and how to avoid it, along with how to handle them properly and professionally if they come into contact with them. They are also very experienced people, who've been doing this for a majority of their lives. I believe Mark himself is a wildlife biologist on top of all that. Of course they know about them already.

Horseshoe crabs are really common along the North Shore of Long Island, near the shores of the beaches of the Long Island Sound. I used to see them, and even pick them up, often as a kid. they never harmed me, but they always bewildered me. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized they were arachnids!! Fascinating creatures!!

i really want to meet one of these, when i went to Greece the only crabs i met were blue crabs. they were really entertaining though, ive never seen a big crab before and they were everywhere, most of them were really agresivne and i even watched two of them fight, they were swimming so fast, like an anime where they move at the speed of light. I tried to catch one with iron tongs and it grabed the tongs with its claws and ripped it self out, it was so EPIC. Best vacation ever.

I remember a a kid going to the beach in the summertime at Wildwood or Cape May, New Jersey and seeing horsecrabs all over the beach and that was around 1970/1975 but today I haven't seen any on the beach in NJ. I don't know if they are going extinct or just not coming to New Jersey beaches anymore and I don't go there as much anymore but I haven't seen one since the 1970's !
