Do Ho Suh: Fallen Star - Stuart Collection

Do Ho Suh’s work explores the notions of home, cultural displacement, one’s perception of space and how one builds a memory of it. What is home, after all? A place? An idea? A sentiment? A memory? A small cottage has been picked up, as if by some mysterious force, and “landed” atop Jacobs Hall at UC San Diego, where it sits crookedly on one corner, cantilevered out over the ground seven stories below. A lush roof garden of vines, flowers and vegetables, frequented by birds and bees, is a small gathering place with panoramic views of the campus and beyond. Upon entering the house it becomes apparent that the floor and the house itself are at different angles, causing a sense of dislocation - some would say vertigo. One must adjust both physically and mentally in order to accommodate a whole new view of the world. The surroundings are familiar but the feeling is not. [2/2022] [Show ID: 37823]

UCSD is moving into the future so fast, the campus community doesn't have time to plant roots before they have to speed off into the world. This little house atop the engineering building reminds us that something like family and home are the basis for all our other engineering visions and that some things so precious as home and family cannot be a side consideration left precariously off-kilter to all our other exploits, but should be a mainstay for our visions for humanity.

A very cool piece of art. Fun. And I'm really glad everyone got it built. These used to be called fancies or follies when people didn't need deep reasons to justify building a mad piece of architecture. Today, academics and the fine art community want to spin a story about disenfranchisement, diversity, overcoming prejudice and so on in order to explain and fund a piece of art like this. To those outside that circle, that talk is, as Jose put it below, "Nonsense." Make up all the stories you want, but joy, wonder, and astonishment, for their own sake, is as valid, or more so, than any convoluted nonsense us dumb folk are supposed to buy into. Again, very cool.

For the price of that conceptual architecture--; repair 1,000 real houses and keep 1,000 more families from living in a car or nowhere--; but, yeah, cute, sure--.

" repair 1,000 real houses and keep 1,000 more families from living in a car or nowhere" - It's almost as if artists are not going to be slaves to the political impulses of the masses.

*puts on my morpheus shades* what if I told you that the wealthiest decile own 72% of wealth, leveraging superior rate of return to grow indefinitely, while the bottom half own just 2% while the educated quibble over the allocation of meager public spending?
