I've been watching your videos for a few years I get alot of your videos, thanks. We share alot of similarities. We both love short game, our games are pretty close, I'm thinking about leaving CA for Georgia and we have similar swing flaws. I share this one you are trying to fix here and I had a revelation while watching you try to fix it. Watching you do it made it look so easy. What I saw was the position of your hands, wrists and partially your forearms are why you/me are getting across the line. So I had this idea to fix that for you, and me......attempting to point the club downrange at the top instead of thinking about 12 o'clock, but 11 or 10 instead. As well I sometimes will think about the butt position at the top too. Pointing it to 4 or 5 o'clock instead of 6. I took this to the range and I liked it. For me, focusing on my right hand and its position seemed better to me. I'll keep working on it. Thanks Matt.

Great video. I’m a club pro working on the same issue with my swing. I have the plane mate. Actually two of them. Best I’ve found so far. Played 18 holes with it on and hit the ball so solid. The muscle memory to the full swing takes a lot of practice but I think it can happen. I use it with my students as well.

Great video. 6 index, also working on the top of the back swing. My issues is more with bending right elbow too much. Planemate is great. Do the 7 day protocol w short band and sand wedge. This has lead to the most progress I’ve ever had correcting top of swing. I also use Sure-set, but put in my trail (right) shoulder.

My swing is very similar to yours. I like to start with my upper body and of course that causes a little out to in and steep. A training aid called the Inside Approach is the best I have found for me. It changes your swing instantly. I think it would help most golfers. By the way love the channel thanks for making time to try to help people out.

I’m started playing three years ago, and according to Garmin, I’ve gone from a 36 to a 17 handicap in that time. I think these gadget are great, if they fix the particular problem (or problems) you have. The fact is most high handicapper don’t know there issues . Due to this, they cling to every new gadget / video that claim to fix the result you see without addressing the underlining causes. To really improve (in my humble opinion) you need to get off KZread, get infront of a pro who can diagnose your real actual issues, and give advise on how to fix the specific issues. But that’s just my opinion

I saw a guy on a different KZread channel use a 3 foot piece of pipe insulating foam tucked into the top rung of a practice bucket.. place the foam about one foot back from the ball .. you have to swing under the foam to hit the ball.. We have similar driver swings with crossing the line at the top, except I tend to cast some. And I have tried a bunch of swing training aids. mainly to fix the cast though. The watson hanger, gbox, planemate (a favorite for many), a knockoff version of the swingyde, structureball, tour angle, some grip thing with spikes, gforce club (like the lag shot) and some I prob forgot. Funny thing is, cheap alignment sticks, and an old folding chair have helped me the most.

Best training aid for the full swing is the Explanar. It’s costly bit works. Now for the driver I am good but also cross the line and I had my son video me and I obsessed about it. Finally got to the point of forgetting about it as it messed me up. My swing is my swing due to surgeries, etc and I went back to hitting is solid again. I’ll never be a PGA pro so I work with what I have and I’m happy with it. I’m down to a low single digit and I’m ok with it.

Bought the Tour Striker Smart Ball. Had it about 2 weeks. Seemed to help. Unfortunately lost it after final round of the year, so I'll have to get a replacement. Hardest part I found was holding the ball in place at the top of the back swing. Have all winter however to do 25-50 swings a day. So potentially could get in 6000 reps by May 1.

When I was watching the Masters I took note of the second place winner Sangeau Im . He would stop at the top of his backswing. I plan to practice a very slow backswing. What’s slow to me may not be very slow. Since timing is everything maybe fractions of a second can make all the difference. Maybe by applying more thought to the top of the backswing will help you stabilize that point in the swing.

I use the TourStrike Plane Mate trainer which is the aid that you demonstrated. I have a similar swing problem in that I am trying to shallow out on the downswing and create more lag and have a increased shaft angle at impact in order to further increase compression. Well my results after using Plane Mate for about 2 weeks have been very positive. I've been a pro since 2004 and I'm usually skeptical about this sort of thing but occasionally I do find something that works and this works for me.

Hey Matt these aids have been around for ages in one form or another! If you are looking to improve your swing start from the ground up! Heard it a 100 times I know but you are focused on a position and hit vs transition and finish. I know it’s hard to have a thousand arm chair critics telling you to do, but like you I suffered from the same issues till I travelled to Australia after school and ran into a female instructor who said after a couple swings said “I bet you can’t dance either “ ouch☹️...She pointed out my total lack of foot, leg and hip work. I was trying to “Hit the ball instead of letting my bottom half of my body move my upper body. Just for the practice and feel try swinging like Matt Wolf but do not hit a ball after a few reps you will understand the bottom half feel and “Focus “. Proper weight transfer can add 20-30 yards check out “Zen golf mechanic and the wood balance board he uses to achieve this. Good luck..P.S the best trading aids are the cheapest ones!

Try this....set up with a wall behind you, maybe 2 feet. Get into your posture and take your normal back-swing....as you do, keep the club-head on the wall throughout. Now, on the down-swing keep the club-head on the wall as long as you can as you swing through the ball. I had the same problems you have and this was the drill that fixed me. Good luck.

I'm not sure why he thinks the "swing thought" technique worked the best when the video actually shows the Planemate helped him the most. For example, replay the video and look at where the shaft intersects with his shoulder and bicep. With this "swing thought," his swing is still too steep. However, with the Planemate, his shaft is now bisecting the bicep on a more shallow path--also fixing the little move he had at the top. Impressive. I may need to order that Planemate.

Lay the tee perpendicular to the target line several inches left of the ball. If you can hit the ball and the tee when practising on a golf matt the fats and the thins will disappear.

I love that you're finally addressing this issue. The reason you're having a hard time curing it is because you've got the cause of it wrong. Your right forearm is rotating counterclockwise as you start down instead of clockwise. Mike Austin called it "spinning the meatballs." I made a video that included this topic before I'd learned about that concept. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWink7KGfN2bmbA.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6Ce1Lyoh5Sto8o.html My swing isn't perfect. I have faults as well, but we can always be better. I'm not trying to preach here, I'm trying to sincerely help. One final thing, your right elbow should remain pretty close to the swing plane and you're coming way off of it. Really, the only reason the hands raise up is that the elbow pushes them up and off and above the swing plane which it should remain on. If the elbow raises above you're lifting your hands too much. It might be that there's too much perspective in the camera. It's best to shoot from as far away as you can zoomed in to get a more oblique angle. I'm shouldn't be giving camera advice as my camera work sucks, but I don't have the sweet equipment that you do. How 'bout those Georgia rain storms, huh? And the lightning that sounds like a bomb went off above you ... Crazy!

It would be great if Mr. Short Game would embrace or at least give consideration to your concept. He is clearly looking to improve his swing and concluded by saying that the power of the mind seemed to be the best solution. The mind needs the correct concepts to apply or it just wanders aimlessly. In my opinion your concepts are exactly what he said he was looking for, although he might not know it yet. It would be fantastic to see someone of Matt's considerable talent apply the perception changes you suggest . The results would be remarkable. That would benefit so many of us and probably lead to the creation of even more enjoyable content to view.

Hey Matt, I have a couple questions: Are you thinking the swing path is too far inside to out because you’re working on shallowing the club, and now that you’re doing that, it’s automatically more inside to out? I’ve seen other YTers say theirs was too inside to out, but they were at like 8° inside to out swing path, and they mentioned that you want 3-5° inside to out. Also, I’m not 100% sure but I think you have the Planemate on incorrectly...might want to check out Martin Chuck’s videos on that, since he invented it...just a thought.

I have always noticed that move you do. I honestly noticed a huge difference when you tested the G-Force. You even stated in the video that you liked the results you saw on video.

Before you even tested it, I was thinking the Plane Mate was going to be the tool to fix your move. It immediately addresses your move. I think ultimately, the issue is that you turn up your wrist at the top of your swing. The two that seems to address this is the Plane Mate and the wrist wrap from the total swing trainer.

Best training aid is an alignment stick. Obviously alignment and they also have a pointy end to stick in the ground and work in swing plane

It seems at the top your trail elbow become disconnected from your "triangle". That is why the ball kept you best in line, keeping your elbows together.

To fix your problem.....put a tee in the bottom of your club grip...in the lil hole....when you bring the club down make shure the tee goes across your ball as you swing...

Bobby Jones said at the top of the swing the club should point to the right of the objective! Stop worrying about it😂 As for the cupped wrist , every golfer before 1940 had a cupped wrist, was considered correct form , didn’t seem to hold them back indeed Ben Hogan called it his “secret”😂

I've tried loads of swing aids.. not one ever worked... i've the same issues as you (across at the top and steep down) get pull hooks and blocks out right.... the only drill that worked for me to not cross the line at the top was a long pause at the top of the swing (think Matsuyama) the hard part is timing the downswing. The other part i don't get is that my practice swing is fluid and in all the correct places but as soon as a ball is there.. back to out of position... but your body can do it... i just not figured it out haha

Your turning the screw maybe should be a slow action. So that the completion of the backswing is when the screw is fully turned and set.

The biggest tool to help you improve your swing is the equipment you have to record, review and analyze what your doing, most of us cannot afford 10 to 20 thousand dollars worth of equipment to do this

Enjoyed the video as always, Matt, but I would have rather seen you review each device according to exactly what the manufacturer says it's designed to do instead of how they work on your one individual issue. You corrected nicely at the end summarizing that it's a mind issue. Once you fully understand what you're supposed to be doing with the swing, if you practice it properly long enough, muscle memory should take over and it becomes repetitive. Just my 2 cents worth!

Five minutes in you mentioned the crux of the issue for most, if not all of us. You said you wanted it to work “quickly, really quickly.” And that’s the issue. We all have been conditioned to want instant gratification now. It’s understandable but you know as well as anyone that that just isn’t realistic when it comes to swing changes. It will take commitment and time with a particular aid/protocol/etc. to see real changes. I like your conclusion though and think a camera and a good swing thought are more valuable than anything. Just takes time to ingrain the desired change, otherwise it will be fleeting like you mentioned earlier in the video.

Thanks that was interesting and I agree with your conclusion that the mind is far more powerful than any "external swing training device". One of the issues that I see these days as a result of all the video tech that we now have, is that some golfers have become obsessed with their swings. To the point were they have stopped playing "Golf" and instead are now play "the perfect golf swing". Instead forget what your swing "looks like" that is irrelevant. All that matters is can you hit the particular shot that you are intending to hit at that specific moment. If you can that's great, if you can't "allow" your body to make the specific movements that it needs to do to perform the shot.

Not sure if this is still bothering you, but it looks to me (not an expert) that you'd benefit from starting your hip rotation a but earlier, just before the top of your swing. It seems like the downswing starts with the shoulders a bit early.

It "looks" like that little move you make from the top that you don't like is because your hands are going straight at the ball. I think they should go more in an arc that starts a bit away from the target and down?

Ok im 11 minutes in and ive noticed a patern. Every time you get across the line at the top, you do another thing before that. That is getting it on the inside on your take away. Every time you get it on the inside you cross the line at the top.

Any swing trainer has a prescribed course of training. I feel that your review was not at all consistent with the results shown because you didn't follow the manufacturers guidance. In case of point I mention the Plane Mate only because I tried using it as a shortcut and failed miserably. Then I went and watched their videos, took the time to first work with the low power chips and pitches and after about a week took my first full swings (where you started out) and had extremely good results. Another thing I noticed is that you did not have the Plane Mate in the same body position recommended - problem? I don't know. Bottom line - any trainer, swing or otherwise, requires practice with feedback along the way. In general I have always before gotten great value from your videos and in this one not so much. Thanks for a great vlog.

Cuz you were experimenting and feeling those different feels with the pizza or whatever else you were imagining. I would say 90% of the essence of the golf swing is the wrists. The bowing left wrist will shallow the club the cupped left wrist will steep en the shaft etc etc. That's why the total golf trainer was working because it actually changed your wrist angles. In my mind that is the essence of the swing that everyone seems to ignore a lot.
