Do Film/TV Prop Makers Consider Fans in Their Builds?

Ғылым және технология

When props are created for films and TV, do prop masters consider that fans will replicate them later? How much did Adam Savage interact with scripts when he worked in film? Does Adam ever get embarrassed telling people what he's working on? In this live stream excerpt Adam answers these questions from Tested members Ian Rigby, Thomas Esson and Michael Schnell, whom we thank for their support. Do you ever get embarrassed describing your current projects?

Peter Capaldi has said that when providing his input into the 12th Doctor's original costume he deliberately pushed for something that fans, some of whom maybe didn't have a lot of money, could replicate easily (partly, I suspect, of course because he was famously a fan himself as a youngster, wrote letters to the production etc. so knew exactly what it meant to them). (as if we needed _another_ reason to appreciate him in the role :)

I sure don't envy design around all that. The doctor being a man of action you can't really rely on accessories, like the fez isn't really that iconic because the Doctor can't practically wear it often. Or sunglasses, while a nice addition they're a challenge acting and silly in many scenes. So there's really the clothes that need to be particular bu not outlandish that similar garments can be found or altered, yet the ensemble has to be distinctive enough that the fan doesn't just look like themselves in a suit.

paramount is a good one. I recall when they were discussing Discovery props and costumes, paramount staff were delighted they had a uniform so complex it could NEVER be replicated by fans and it would spur a lot of first party costume sales... and fans had replicated the uniform before the first episode came out. So, speaking of not recognizing people, Adam -- about a decade ago, you came to a manufacturing center I worked at to film some corporate promotional video. I knew that one was being filmed that day, but I hadn't known who the hosts were going to be, and so I walked in in the morning, walked past the room with the printers, and took passing note through the windows of somebody in what I thought at the time was a kind of silly hat being shown around the room. I took the measurements I needed, and went back to my desk, and a little while later one of my coworkers got in and asked what was up, "Oh, there's somebody with kind of a funny hat back in the shop getting a tour." My co-worker asks, "Oh, who? Were they with Adam Savage?" I might not have recognized the hat, but I loved Mythbusters, so I don't think I got much else useful done that entire day, other than listen in to the discussions and stuff during filming. I was insanely jealous of the colleagues who'd gotten to be in it more. (I think the back of my head made some B-roll shot the previous day.) So sometimes people know who you are we just don't....you know. Know that you're you.

2:30ish This feels almost like the gaming community and modding... For pretty much every game, it's written in the EULA that we all "sign" just by installing it, that modification of assets is not allowed. AND YET, the vast majority of game devs/studios/publishers never follow up on it. Yes, SOME do, like Rockstar, but I think in most of those cases it's because they can be used in multilayer (MP) mode and give unfair advantage. Even then, there have been times when MP games have allowed modding to a degree. World of Warcraft in the early days had an amazing HUD mod that tapped into a website and provided you with information on enemies and loot. And since it didn't offer any unfair advantage, they allowed it for YEARS _(I do think that it eventually changed later on, for whatever reason)._ It's great when those with the power DO turn a blind eye to things like this. ♥️

What a world. I feel embarrassed when people compliment me. Feels undeserved, yet at the same time I want to be appreciated when I try to do a good thing. Talking about accomplishments feels arrogant even when it's not, but I have come to learn recently that reflecting on what I have achieved makes me less embarrassed, because I believe in what I can do. Still, it's hard being a person, especially an introvert in a world that likes loud, shouty people who get really emotional. To your point--that's why I try to avoid emotions and try to keep things calm. Because I am always struggling with my own feelings and just want peace.

I was a security guard at a music festival once, and I guarding the entrance to this exclusive lounge for the stupidly rich people. This guy walks up with a posse of people and asks to go in. I asked to see his wristband, and he didn't have the necessary wristband for that lounge. I tell him he can't enter, and he briefly tried to argue with me. Saying he paid a ludicrous amount of money for all access to literally everything. I showed him the list of accepted wristbands, and how his wasn't on it, and he was like "ok. I guess that's that." And the whole gang walked off. As they're walking away, a guy that was with them was like "do you know who that guy is?" It was Johnny Galecki. I turned away Leonard from The Big Bang Theory, and didn't even know it. Not that my decision would've changed had I realized who it was, because I do my job properly, but still. Would've been cool if I'd known it was him.

There are too many people who seem to think that models and props exist not to look good on screen but to be put in a museum despite the majority of it rarely surviving past production. Most of it gets the same treatment as the stuff from Star Trek The Motion Picture -some guys with axes show up after the filming and smash everything into pieces just because the production company doesn't want to pay for storage.

Don't be embarrassed by what you do to earn a living and support your family. Its your craft and what makes you happy and if you found a career doing it , so much the better . In my case I find that most people are interested , some are uninterested or don't understand when you tell them and others think that's cool, you are doing what you love. I find it odd how some careers and hobbies are looked at negatively vs others simply because the person is not interested in that subject. I don't follow sports, don't care about it. I often find that when people find out that fact they are put off by it or even shocked because that happens to be more socially acceptable. Follow your own path and don't worry about what people think. They aren't living your life you are. If you are a maker or into cosplay and it makes you happy then do it embrace it!

After years of seeing the alterations that occur from concept drawing to finished product I remain baffled by the need to release kits in bizarre box scales. With the enduring popularity of 1/72, 1/2500, and 1/1000 kits, I wish there were ever more industry people who'd stop for a minute and make a design adjustment for scale's sake. There's money in merch, after all.

One person asked me who he was so i named off a few things, they didn't know but insisted he looked familiar. I know that "tip of the tongue" can be frustrating so i really wanted to help so i was like "he was john connors asshole step dad in terminator 2" Xander stopped what he was doing, gave me the stink eye and said "ive done other things since then" and then let out a big laugh. Whether that be fandom things or work things. Inside the envelope, I feel embarrassed, but entirely because of imposter syndrome. And not without reason. I recently spoke at a conference after more than a decade of being pressured to do so, and covered my nervousness with humor. I said we were using our current architecture AND arcane dark magic, implying it was out of date and obscure. Someone afterwards made a comment implying our architecture was the out of date thing, and that pretty much shut me down. Even though he was wrong to a shocking degree (it's literally the second most common).

My personal opinion: I think Star Trek selling books with ship designs and what not is something the studios should consider. Sell a book with scale drawings and a license to make the object not-for-profit. Or patterns for outfits. It wouldn’t really be any different than any other merchandise. The problem is keeping the studios from being greedy.

I'm not a cosplayer or fan prop maker, but I wonder... Would there be a market for the studios, once everything has wrapped, to SELL "Maker Kits"? So for example: - If they had to make a costume almost entirely from scratch, offer a "costume kit" that contains all the materials/baubles/pstches/doodads that might be hard to source, as well as a BoM List of the easy to source items, to still let the fans literally make it to their size requirements. (maybe labeling the kits as "Sm to Md", "Lg to XLg", "XXL to XXXL" which have sufficient material) - Prop Kits would similarly have all the hard stuff to source, but not anything circuits that might have been custom made since having to make more would now be entering into a produced product. The maker would still have to do all the legwork in crafting it, cutting stuff to size, and then painting and/or weathering. Therefore, presumably, still giving you a sense of pride in the end. Or, would this actually NOT interest folks? Since now many, _many_ people would be walking around with that prop, or as those characters, robbing you of being more unique compared to before? 😅 I can totally appreciate that if so... 🤔 On the flip side, it might still sell alot since now so many others who considered it too laborious to source stuff, would now be able to build their favorite costume/prop... 🤷‍♂️☺️

My wife tells me about unhoused and abused students she works with all day and my biggest complaint was that it took me 45 minutes to find the right reference for Spider-Ham.

if a movie company made their 3d models for iconic props they already have public and free, it wouldnt do anything but good, they are so scared of loosing a few extra dollars that they wont even make in the first place if they dont sell a prop/toy/figure.

At one time in my life I designed my own spaceships and built models of them. I became embarrassed when friends would question my choice of hobbies and destroyed all of them. I still have the design drawings and now that I am older and much more inclined to remake them better and more detailed, I want to. time is my critical factor. I have begun a new life with a new family and I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to take time away from them but I have the desire to remake all of them. I am so frustrated!

While you always need to give time to your family, you also need time to recharge so you can give your best to them. I suggest carving out some time each week to carve out your spaceships. Even if it's just a couple of hours, it's always a good thing to feed your soul.

Follow your heart and passion for your own happiness and sanity. Good luck

I think in many cases, when asked, “Who are you?”, the best answer is, “Nah, I’m nobody.” And laugh it off with a smile. Sometimes you just don’t have the time or the inclination to get into it, especially with someone who probably isn’t going to appreciate it. And you avoid the awkward feeling of self-promotion and bragging.

Holy crap! So you're tellin' me the only problem here is the money? A nothing-thing we made up and put in between us and all of the some-things we need to stay alive. Like what if we had as system that helped people find fulfillment through collective actualization rather than everyone wandering around searching for self-actualization in a consumer-centric capitalist corpocracy. People doing and making what they want and love doing and making because it's a benefit to everyone, not because they can't feed themselves if they can't. We literally have drones and robots now to take care of the things we don't want to. What if we stop using them to them to TOS brown kids 1000s of miles away, which in turn is stuffing billions of dollars in the pockets of U.S. arms manufacturers, and start using them to help people. Humans get so much benefit from the act of creating weather it's Art, Infrastructure, or life itself, let's make it so everyone has access to be able to engage in more acts of creation, instead of being complicit to k!ll!ng.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people who try dining out on something they did that’s long since past. @@jagdson2701 The US didn’t get involved in WW2 out of some moral imperative. If they had, they would have been fighting since 1 September 1939. It wasn’t until the USA itself was attacked at Pearl Harbour on 7 Dec 1941 that the USA joined the war. So yeah, had they themselves not been attacked, the USA would have sat on the sidelines and watched.
