I remember one time I went to New York, I just had this gut feeling telling me to scream/shout and so I said, "Kapwa Kabayan!" (Fellow Countrymen!" and out of nowhere several heads turned towards me and they raise their fist before saying, "Mabuhay!!" Just so you know, those people were total strangers to one another. And well, because of what I did, it actually brought us together like we're a bunch of old friends having a reunion. This happened 8 years ago and it was hilarious!

Absolutely true when you meet kapwa filipinos here in the states you end up being invited at their houses for food and parties! 😄

I am here in the US and whenever I meet Filipinos around I greet them Kabayan :) I will never ever forget where I came from. I cried when I was taking the oath of US citizenship. I feel like I was betraying my country when I did that. I really choked up. Others may mistake it as some kind of happiness being a US citizen, but no. Even if I took that oath, deep inside me I will still be a Filipino. I am staying here only until my husband dies and my son will be grown and be able to take care of himself. Hopefully, introducing him to our culture will make him change his mind and decide to stay in PI as well. I am praying for that. Most of all, I want to come back so I can help other Filipinos in their poverty. Somehow, someway I will be able to do that.

Who am I to judge how you feel, You know better amongst us what/how you judge your act regardless of emotion. When I was young, everytime I see white(westeners) person, my impression to them is they are above me in everything., and when I turned 23, i went in middle east to work w/o educational degree & experience(9th grader), I just bring myself w/ bravery&sense of respect, after 6 yrs, my friend told me to apply in Canada, same thought, I will just bring the same person there but I doubt to make it, Then Canadian embassy in Riyadh sent an email to provide my transcript & it should at least 21units, at that moment, I turned it down and told my friend that I will not meet the requirements even I can find ways for financial with this application. Then I went back In the Philippines, my sister told me I have to try in USA, I said no, I will not even think of that because of 1 pc of requirement, but still she beg me to try so we can have a better life, I told her ok I'll try it but I'll never expect, I went to US embassy in manila and failed the last round of the interview, I saw most of there are eager to go in that country a lot of them are begging and crying just to have a visa, but not me, when the last interviewer told me that I wasn't eligible with it, I said well that's fine, can I have my passport and left the building. Then this old man pop out saying you(filipinos) should be proud to be one, should be a patriotic, should have dignity, should have pride though lot of you doesn't have a choice but to work overseas for the meantime, I'll do my best to lift up our nation. Dyan ko naramdaman na tama ako na karamihan sa atin ay my inferiority complex towards westeners. Masaya ako na may pangulong tulad ni duterte, Kaya last time sa smart office s my SM merong kano na sunod sa pila ko para kumuha ng ticket at sinabi nya na dalian ko, lumingon ako sa kanya tinignan ko lang cya from foot to head then down to his foot again w/o any word. That moment dun ako nakaramdam ng inis sa puti, dun ko naalala yung pagpunta ko sa us embassy.

i remember one time in kyoto japan i was just looking on a place to go then on the spot where i stand, there were three filipinas which happens to have a trip to kyoto, because i heard them speaking my language i tell to them "pinoy pala kayo ^_^ (oh you are filipino)" then the ending, i was now part of their trip and they ended up as my bestfriends ^_^

my guess why filipinos know each other is because maybe we think we are a minority. so we always have this thought/principle which is "the only person that can help you besides yourself is your neighbor". it's all about being neighbors that we know each other. i may not know you, but if my neighbor knows you, then i know you, too, maybe not personally but i trust my neighbor, so, then i know you. 😁

I was skeptical, do we really _know_ each other? But then, it is true, in a sense, that the Filipino's camaraderie as a nation is so powerful. Sometimes scarcity do cloud us, otherwise, we treat each other as family. How we see our neighbors' house as our own and ours, them; how OFWs meeting for the first time yet, it looks like they've known each other for long; how we empathize with victims reported on tv; how we pitch in singers/artists to every single youtube reactor; how we crushed internet/text polls to support beauty queens; how we raise views of international talent shows to support full, half-, 1/4, tad-blood Filipino contestants; how everyone, in one mind, watch in anticipation of a win of a boxing pride; how people come together in non-violence, disregarding their own safety, for democracy. All for one, one for all. Now that's family.

This might be sudden, but right now our kababayan is currently being bullied by DOH, FDA, business conglomerates, government? (who knows). *Do you know Dr. Farrah?* She's a doctor who treats cancer (with miraculous results). She doesn't do chemo and believe in treating it naturally (organic farm & herbal inventions), eating healthy and changing lifestyle. She does free consultations and check-ups. Once in a foreign country, strolling down with my family on a busy tourist area, there's this family (also parents with kids) about 30 meters away walking down the opposite side, who turned and locked eyes with us, then we simultaneously waved and smiled.... those are filipinos of course, like we are all 'family', we just felt it.😊

We Filipinos are not racists but everytime we see a filipino it’s automatic that our hearts connects us like Wifi and tells us we are one race and be glad to meet them.

That's being natural for every Filipinos,, that even we don't know each other we love and respect every fellow men

when we were in wellington new zealand for a training, pinoys working there takes time to call us kabayan whenever we came across them and have a little chit chat. my friend with me is a good cook and he presented to cook pinoy food for a family we came across after a little talking, then they buy all needed ingridients and we were offered a night stay in their home doing videoke , so we.skip staying in the hotel for one night and the family was very happy eating pinoy food they really missed. we are now a close friend on facebook.

The video made me realise that we don't just like each other but we love each other we are family and that made me a softie but reading comments of my fellow Filipinos made me cry..

This video is from 2011,I've been away for many years and still the same, no bus stops. How about at present time, still no bus stops? I wonder. So much has change and progress , still the same. That's good in a way because I will feel like I've never went away when I go back home.

When I moved back to the US and got my first apartment at age 18, the landlord's wife was a Filipina. Since I didn't have any furniture, they gave me all their their old furniture and everything that I didn't need to buy anything for the apartment except for food. Several years after I got settled in, I made friends with another Filipino who was going thru some hard times and I allowed him to move in with me while he was looking for another job and another place to stay.

I love how you observed us Filipinos, You are now part of the Family...actually i look like from India and my sisters looks like from China...but sometimes my looks change to Latina...hahaha....and when i walk on the street of Tokyo...i know if someone walking towards me is a filipino or not cause she looks more Japanese..but then i know...and you know what? We Filipino when we feel that someone( specially here abroad) is Filipino we both look at each other’s eyes...and then we know...and to make it sure she’s a filipina...we smiled back and talk saan ka dito...or Pinay ka no?And the other Pinay...will talk to me...i’m not sure if ur pinay cause u looks like latina or somewhere from a america sur....and then we laugh....even the most suplada, a sun hit or snob...is the best clue that’s she’s Filipina...hahaha....kunyare suplada cause, the truth she’s shy or afraid na masungitan din...but when they talk...it’s non stop...lol

ha ha ha strangest community - yeah, we don't know each other - but I had an experience when we went to Korea with my sister last May without any tour guide just an address - we met a Filipino family at the airport going to Jeonum Province and we went with them. When we met their relative, they introduced us and we asked the direction going to Naju City. She brought us in the ticket booth and paid our transportation and directed us in the bus. You see we just met and as if we knew each other ha ha ha. Thanks for that person.

What's nice and happy is, when in another country, a kababayan you chanced upon always have that warm smile and ready eagerness to help out when you are lost or confused... although total strangers, they feel like 'family'. Thanks God for the close knit family culture of the Philippines that we still enjoy beyond our shores.

I remember I was in the Dominican Republic and I heard someone speaking Filipino and I hurriedly talked to him.

So true my friend...

Am just remember my flight back to the Philippines from Hongkong. I'm in the middle sit in business class. My left side is Filipino guy and in my right side is American guy. We didn't Know each other. But when a Filipino guy try to talk to me in Tagalog, we started chatting and laughing as if we're close relative. And the American guy in my right who's tring to sleep was Disturbed. Then he asked me if we've known each other and I said no, Just now. That time, he start chatting us. And told us why he is coming to Philippines. He said that it's his first time, but because his wife who happened to be Filipina, he has to know the country. Although he is not confident of going alone.

what you said is 100% true. we do know each other. i was in hong kong last month and i got lost going to stanley, what i did was to look around, spot a filipino, and viola, i have a "sister" who took me to the bus station, gave me the right instructions as to where i should get off and i reached stanley. going back to the hotel, i did the same thing.

Great speech! I agree with this observation. Filipinos form a bond of sorts. Once we were in an airport lounge in Schiphol and the duty manager was a Filipina. When she saw our group she brought an entire cart of snacks for us! I also experienced something similar aboard a cruise ship with my friend’s family. We got treated to all the Filipino dishes during meal times. They were so happy to see their kabayans on board. And this is why I encourage my friends to teach their kids and grandkids how to speak Tagalog. It is the key that unlocks this privilege club.

Thanks, @Dinah Salonga! The whole thing roots from our ancient past where these beautiful islands nourished us abundantly. We did not have to grab, scam, or hoard stuff. We shared, cared for, and respected each other. We still, consciously and unconsciously, live out values like 'kapwa tao', and 'bayanihan.' I am not a native, but I have learned through osmosis:)

As a Filipino, I just take for granted this trait that we possess and good thing you have this lecture and it served as an eye opener because you, as an outsider can determine the difference or the unique trait that we have because you have experienced other cultures as well as you are from a different culture & also have observed other cultures like the American culture. Dear Heaven Ablaze, Thank you for your appreciation. I used to be an outsider. Now, on the outside I may not look like it, in my heart I know that I am an insider. Mabuhay po!

It's funny and a bit sad. When Filipinos meet each other overseas, it's all heartwarming and glad smiles to be with a kabayan in a foreign land. But when we get home, the labels that kept us divided - wealth, social status, regionalism, religion, even race - all kick in. Metro Manilans feel superior, Cebuanos despise the "taga-Luzon" in general, everybody hates Chinoys because they're rich and refuse to "integrate," Indians are perceived as loan sharks, Africans don't get the same treatment as Caucasians (and recently, Koreans), the Iglesia ni Kristo are seen as a religious mafia of sorts, Muslims are believed to adhere to some passage in the Quran that says they can take advantage of Christians without consequence... Sure, there's largely no pain or suffering as a direct consequence, but these divisions (to be fair, some may be justified) have kept important legislation from being enacted and have held back policies that should have moved the country forwards.

I learned at a young age to respect people of all ages; whatever their status in life was. I learned that the hard way. We had a "katulong" in our house when I was 12 years old and did not really appreciate how she made our life better by doing everything for us. But, by its very word and meaning, "katulong" means somebody helping you out. Not a slave. When we had to move house from the province to the city, I had to do EVERYTHING. Clean the small house we moved into, go to the market with my mother, help my mother out in preparing the meals, IRON my own clothes (I hated that the most out of all the household chores I had to do :), and do my own LAUNDRY. Then, I remembered how tirelessly she worked by herself when most of us just do nothing. My mom helps her out though. But not me. I did not have the opportunity to say sorry to her and thank her for helping us (even though she gets paid to do it) when we got back to visit my grandmother in the province and that really made me sad. From then on I resolved to give respect to people who have jobs that others may think is too lowly. I thank them wherever I may find them: in the CR's working to clean it for us to use, the man or woman sweeping the streets for us to traverse without stumbling over trash that PEOPLE throw haphazardly (litterbugs), greeting the guards, salespeople, and vendors. Bottomline: RESPECT ALL PEOPLE WHATEVER THEIR STATUS IN LIFE.

Mr. Raju, i totally agree with you.. wherever Filipinos met each other, they greet to each other. Like here in the middle east, even me, when I met a Filipino just a simple raise of my eyebrow and he/she replied back the same gesture. And that's how unique we are compare to other nationals.

That is our nature. Even we are in other country and just look in eyes. We smile and ask are you a filipino? If yes then we talk in our language. We ask are work here, etc.

You don't really feel this as much when you're in the Philippines but when you go overseas then this makes a lot of sense. Everywhere I go here in Canada I always hear the word kababayan even though I don't know these people.

I watch this over and over again feeling like ""ohhh yes that's us"" thank you mr raju... i just hope that the world of fast tech and modernisation won't rub us so much of that "" why are they sitting so close, do they know each other thing"" we, ofw will no doubt remain like we know each other for always .... Wish for more speakers like you...

Hey Mabelle, the gurus of research who study social sciences and culture did a research a few years ago raising the question if modernization and information access and travel will harmonize the whole world into a common culture and the outcome of that research was a resounding "no!". We may change our superficial habits like eating McDonalds or dressing like Benetton but our deeper values and our true culture will sustain for thousands and thousands of years. We, Filipinos, are tribal and islandic and caring. The spirit of Kapwa Tao and Bayanihan will be always with us. Mabuhay!
