DO FERRETS SMELL BAD ? | Tips to Reduce Ferret Smell

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

One of the most common things asked about ferrets, is "do they stink?". Ferrets have gotten a bad reputation for being extremely stinky animals. I do believe that ferrets in the past were much smellier, but as the years have gone on, ferret-care has improved, reducing their smell!
In this video I go over 'ferret smell', as well as 3 ways to reduce ferret smell.

They have their own strong unique scent. It will always be there. This is an animal that requires being descented beforehand.. it has to be Accept or chose another pet. I wish I had known this before and more ferret owners need to be honest and not so sensitive about their pet

People think Ferret smell because they belong to the weasel family and the species have a gland that emits a skunk like odor. I would like to get one but am hesitant because of it

I take my ferret out to the back yard every day for at least an hour. She loves crawling through the monkey grass, and rubbing herself in the grass. It’s fall now, and she loves playing in the crunchy leaves. She digs in her favorite little “den” under the garden wall, and, when we come back to our room, she mostly smells like outside. I use a combination puppy pad and paper litter, it’s easy to clean up, and keeps her poop smell to a minimum. I wash her beds and slings and blankies about once a month ( makes her mad) , lol

100% Absolutely Correct. 1. Don't give them a bath. 2. Keep their litter clean. 3. Wash their bedding. The only time I bathe my ferrets is if they get covered in poop or something.

@@oxcheycheyxo I have 8 in 1 Ferret Sheen shampoo for them but only use that if they are really a mess (actually only once so far in the last four years). I usually just use warm water. The problem with any soap or shampoo is it removes the oil so use it as little as possible. It's probably fine to use baby shampoo on feet where you're not going to dry out the skin. ALSO: if they poop on the pad wipe it up asap so they don't get it all over if they step in it AND you might need to clean the litterbox right after they use it because some ferrets won't use a dirty litterbox. They'll jump in to go and smell the poop/pee and jump back out again. Most of my ferrets will only use a dirty box if they're caged and expect the multiple boxes around the apartment to be spotless.

short story, on my journey to adopting my first ferret....i first held one at a local mom and pop style pet store..and fell in love. not only with their personalities but just generally...holding one while it was 'dead asleep' in my arms. when i got home that night and i was putting a feisty ferret home together to prepare for adopting my own, me and my daughter kept saying we MISSED the ferrets, we could still smell them on our clothing, it made us sad, and upon cleaning up i stumbled upon a tube of burts bees honey chapstick. popped the cap and smelled it, (seeing if it was still in good shape basically) and my eyes teared up...BECAUSE IT SMELLED EXACTLY LIKE THE FERRETS WE'D HELD. THEY SMELL LIKE BURTS BEES HONEY PRODUCT. my eyes teared up, then my daugher's, because we missed the ferrets we'd spent the day with and wanted to adopt our own. for anyone worried they 'STINK' they don't. they have a smell, it's strong...but as a ferret owner....im completely endeared and love their natural musky scent. it's a mix between honey and the very slightest skunkiness...that is in no way BAD either. our ferret is a member of our family, and her scent is something comforting to us all, just as a baby's scent is likely the best to their mother. if in doubt, go buy a tube if burts bees chapstick. that's the most accurate match for what they smell like!!

I think it’s just that they have a distinct aroma. When you say “stink” people add their own connotation because smell is subjective; think the worst like garbage. But we known it’s not like that. I wouldn’t even say they stink. It’s just a pungent aroma that can be over whelming. It reminds me of honey. Best comparison

Right! To me its just a musk. Changing their litter daily, washing litter boxes weekly, washing bedding every 3 days or once a week (in free & clear detergent & vinegar) makes a HUGE difference. And ofc diet is the main culprit. I noticed ferrets fed Marshalls kibble do straight up stink, and I noticed that food turned my white ferrets yellow! When I slowlt switched them to a different kibble & freeze dried raw their next coat was white and stayed white! I personally love the ferret Musk, cause I love them so much ❤ I've had a lot of ppl tell me I smell like ferret lol 🤣

Ok so, I'm stumped. I've owned 1 male ferret from a pet store (so neutered) for about 6 months. We just adopted/rescued 2 bonded pair for him (male and female also fixed). They hardly smell, AT ALL, but my 1 ferret (Dusty) smells AWFUL ALL the time. I clean his cage every day (deep clean) and wash his bedding 1x/week.... He eats the stupid marshal ferret food garbage... But he refuses raw chicken. The 2 I adopted are clearly VERY malnourished. The poor things are skin and bones, half Dusty's size and weight but about 6 months older. They were fed nothing but special kitty cat food.... (Praise God they ate raw chicken tonight for me!) Why does Dusty stink SOOOO bad but the other 2 hardly at all? Is it because they're not producing oil in a healthy way because they're so sick/underweight? Their fur is like, clumpy.... And let me add, I don't mind smells of animals... But when you walk into my son's room (where Dusty is) it's overwhelming... I don't understand. He still says moistened food, but I clean his poo every day, he uses the little pan, I just donno why he smells soooo bad. And it's not a musky like smell... It stinks.

Do you know if they smell more than rats? People told me the same when I got rats, that they stink and are dirty. But spot cleaning daily and deep cleaning once a week was enough so that strangers couldn't tell I owned any animal when coming over. You only could smell them, if you would stand right infront of their cage. And I even had male rats, which suposingly smell worse than females.

Just a different kind of smell. Ferrets have a Musk smell to them. When you fall in love with your pet ferret you'll love their musk. As long as their litter, cage, litter boxes and bedding is washed/changed regularly. Ferrets are a lot of work not going to lie, but to me they're worth it. They bring so much love and happiness, entertainment and cuddles. Silly little goofy creatures

on hot days I place large ice cubes in their water, place frozen blankets and bottles around their cage and keep a fan on the highest setting infront of the cage, then when I get home after wok I let my ferrets play in water or in the shower to cool off as temps can get round 30c. (sometimes i leave a container of water in their to incase they want to swim am I able to do this with out getting rid of their natural oils. What elce would people recomend to cool down a ferret. Also I ,dont work from home so their in their cage for about 7-8 hours on week days (I ,try and keep them out all mthe time weekends), Is their something i can add to their diet to help restore their natural oils
