Do EV tires really work? We test Sailun ERange tires on a Tesla Model 3 to find out

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I’m back again to answer the question: Why do you need to equip your EV with tires that are designed specifically for EVs?
It’s one thing to simply explain the benefits of EV tires, but it’s another to truly experience them and why they’re so important to your ride. So, today we’re going to Los Angeles, California to get that experience for ourselves, courtesy of a Tesla Model 3 spec’d with Sailun Tire’s ERange EV tire.
Now, the streets of Los Angeles were the perfect place to test these tires - first of all, it was an opportunity to do some real-world driving, taking real-world routes that drivers on the west coast might be taking every day.
Also, there were a variety of roads to drive on - we took a lot of city roads as we drove through downtown Beverly Hills, but we also had a chance to take some of the winding, mountain roads as we checked out some of the multi-million-dollar homes of Hollywood’s elite, and then also State Routes 101 and 1, which, 1 runs along the California coastline and was just beautiful. That meant we got everything from bumper-to-bumper traffic to tight, winding turns and merging onto crowded highways.

I am running them on my 2017 Model S and so far I am very happy with them. I plan to get a pair for the front.

I just bought a set recently because the oem Pirellis bubbled. I have a 22 m3p. With oem 20 inch rims/pirellis my avg was 184wh/km. With 20 inch sailun erange ev my avg is 146wh/km. The tires are quiet, my wife says it’s ride more comfortable but most importantly my range estimate is more accurate than ever, Always beat trip estimate nowadays.

Now that you've had them on for a while, do you still recommend them? I also have a '22 M3P that came with summer Pirelli P-Zero's that still have good tread remaining but I need some rubber that will handle winter cold and some snow. These don't have the foam ring to quiet down road noise so I've been very curious about how they perform in the real world on 20" rims. Also on a reddit thread I was looking at someone said they were not happy with these at all, cornering grip was not what they were used to with the P-zero's.

I didn't know there was tires made for EV vehicles specifically, that's cool.

just bought a set for MYP, and will install it this weekend, On paper, this is so competitive with major brands, I really hope they do well in all aspects!

Any 6mos update on the tires? How is it holding up?

@@baldpnoy410 I used on my model Y, 21 inch in OEM size trim. Did about 10k miles on them, I can’t complaint about the any traits. Because it brought down the kw/miles. If I had to pick on them, it doesn’t stick as good as Pirelli P-zero. That’s given.

@@TonyTsaiThinking about getting them... Replacing my oem Goodyears that probably does not stick as good as the P-zeros. How does it handle in the rain? I know it's been raining a ton in Cali. Also hows the highspeed freeway noise?

@@baldpnoy410 in rain, it’s not bad at all. Granted, I’m at OEM suggesting tire pressure. Less contact patch helps in the rain. Noise are about the same to me…

@@TonyTsai I went to my tire shop today for a quote pn a set of Goodyear OEM replacement. Shop told me that the Goodyear is not that good compare to the Sailun, which his recommendation to go with. They are also about $450 cheaper for a set than the Goodyears. I was surprise that he is recommending a cheaper alternative that he thinks are better tires. Have you taken them for a long drive or any road trips?

Can we use these for gas cars too

You should be able to use these for gas-powered cars as well and many of the benefits of using tires designed for EVs should carry over, but we recommend double-checking with your local tire dealer before pulling the trigger to ensure there won't be any issues with fitting them to your particular vehicle.

Why won't anyone say what tire they are comparing these tires too? On the Model 3, is the quiet ride and range increase compared to the OEM Michelins or some non-specific aftermarket tire? This video is useless without that one key piece of information.

A comparison with EV tires would be FAR more useful than schilling for this brand without much knowlege of the topic than what the manufacturer says.. EV tires are ALL quieter due to foam lined interior and tread design, have better range, and better load capacity.

from what I've been reading and seeing these do not use any foam but still achieve a quieter ride than the OEM tires

These do NOT have the foam. All tires are quieter when new. Curious how loud they become at 50% tread. The michelins on the model 3 are OK new but get very noisy when worn down a bit.
