Do Cheetahs Eat Carrion? Man Plays Dead Inside Big Cat Enclosure To Test Predator Theory

With 'Gabriel The Cheetahs' help, we test whether a cheetah eats carrion as I play dead inside his enclosure. Ok, I was just funning but it is a known fact that cheetahs eat very clean. They don't hoard food, don't return to their kills afterward, don't track down carrion to eat and are easily run off their kills. There are various reasons that cheetahs do not eat carrion and it is mostly due to their smaller stature compared to other larger predators and their genetic design.
I've mentioned before that Cheetahs are physically and mentally designed to run and not fight. They sacrifice a lot of muscle, strength and design to be able to hunt the fastest prey that other predators can't chase down. Cheetahs have a special niche of prey but can and do tackle larger ones when they have help from coalition partners, like brothers or introduced coalition males from other mothers.
So, why don't Cheetahs eat carrion? Multiple factors which some are fact while others my theory. Most health problems cheetahs have are due to their lack of genetic diversity due to a genetic bottlenecking that occurred before the last Ice Age. They turned to Inbreeding to survive as a species and that resulted in a weakened breeding stock; making them more susceptible to diseases.
Cheetahs don't have a robust digestive system like hyenas, lions, crocodiles, or vultures. Yes, they can digest bone like the other cats, but are more susceptible to diseases from bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungus. Cheetahs have NOT historically fed upon carrion and so not designed genetically to handle rancid foods. Ask a vulture or crocodile to eat days old rancid meat and they will with no problems. Gabriel got very sick once for a few days with an intestinal problem and I highly suspect it was bad donated chicken. Since legally owning Gabriel, I buy him fresh game meat to help avoid that.
But, the temperament of Cheetahs is also why I believe the don't eat "the dead". Cheetahs are highly skittish and don't like conflict and will innately bluff and avoid conflict because they cannot win battles against leopards, lions, or even hyenas who are much more powerful. So, Cheetahs don't challenge other predators for their food or kills. For instance, there is no instances where a cheetah climbed a tree to feed on a leopard's kill or any other predator's kill. They simply can't chase off other predators from their prey; not even smaller predators, like a caracals and jakals.
A Cheetahs sense of smell is not as keen as a lions, leopards, or tigers. They have enough to sense a cheetah in heat but they have to get very close to a scent to properly identify it. I often see them dipping down close to the ground to get a proper sniff of something. A Cheetahs large eyes and great sense of hearing is more important to them for survival.
Also, in the wilds of Africa, nothing of nutritional value to a predator lasts long. True scavengers quickly consume anything left over from a death; making the opportunity to feed from it limited. A scavenger's design is to look out for the dead and that is NOT what a predator like a cheetah does. A Cheetah makes the kill. So, I think for a Cheetah to suddenly switch to eating carrion would be a detriment to its health for this and other reasons I mention.
Ok, in the wild there are no clean drinking fountains and the brackish water is certainly something to consider when talking about ingesting rancid, bacterial waters. Wild animals do get sick from drinking this kind of water... ones where animals constantly defecate and urinate in them but also get killed and create decaying debris in it. Cheetahs don't wait for it to rain to drink fresh water. Cheetahs drink from lakes, ponds, and rivers, but they also get much of their liquids from the blood of t heir kills. Certain immunity occurs from drinking and surviving such dirty parasitic and diseased waters but I think the Cheetahs limited genetic mix is a reason for them to avoid eating carrion.
Captive cheetahs raised with their mothers helps them build immunity, size, and strength. I've seen cheetah mom suckle their cubs up to 8 months old. When they do, the nutrient and protection from that milk is an advantage to the cub. Captive bred and hand raised cheetahs without their moms are much more susceptible to diseases than ones raised without their moms.
A Cheetah will not eat me as I play dead inside its enclosure because of its nature, but in Gabriel's case, it is because I am his best friend so why would he? :-)

Your average man beats your average cheetah in a fight with low diff. They aren't that strong, they can run fast but compared to big cats they're not. They weigh around 70 lb. and their claws aren't retractile like other felines. They don't have the power to disembowel you effectively. The only they're able to hunt similar sized prey is when they form groups of 3-5. A single cheetah has little to no chance against a man. I'd say the odds of a 5'6, 170 lb man beating a cheetah in a fight is 80:20.

@@The_Andromeda_Galaxy this is not true. Give it a male adult cheetah with an average male adult human (about 62kg) and cheetah wins every time or in worst case scenario runs away. Humans do not posses natural ability to kill animals of their size or even a smaller predator. Cats aim for your neck and humans neck isnt protected by anything really. I give a cheetah vs average human 10 seconds max before they kill.

At least thats what he learned from his mama,. Learning how to fight from young age with their brothers and how to take care each other from their mother.

@Khair Muhammad There are sanctuaries like that... handicapped or old retired cheetahs that have forever homes in South Africa. I know of a three legged one that is part of a breeding program. I would like to care for a couple of rescue cheetahs myself, but ONLY if they cannot be released or be part of a breeding program. Then I would not object to caring for them even in my home but grant them freedom to come and go with my home inside a large enclosure. Use them for educational purposes to save their species.

@@loop5720 The only way we as human caretakers of this animal world could justify having a captive cheetah, or any wild endangered animal (not as a pet) would be if the animal needed sanctuary because they could not be released for these following reasons... handicapped, sick or injured too much for release and possibly used for breeding, old and we had them captive for breeding purposes (in other words NOT taking an old cheetah out of the wild because it is old and we want a 'pet' cheetah), also, for quality research to save them from extinction (like sperm or egg collection) and in 'some' cases in quality zoos for educational purposes (but the zoo must have proper space and focus on the animals welfare rather than the publics for profit). That is what I have concluded from years of studying life sciences and observing captive nature of wild animals. Gabriel here is at a breeding center and an active member of that project trying to re-populate his dying species. I get to interact with him but not like a pet. We are friends and I respect his wild nature and allow him free and wild as possible to include his behavior. Nothing he does is scripted or taught, but just him being him and me observing and being his friend. I would approve of training him to go on hunts with me to teach him to be a wild cheetah. One day I want to do just that on a game range. I hope I can...

Smothering you has Always been Gabriel's preferred way of showing his affections and greeting people, not just me. At his age now (5yrs), I am the only one that is brave enough and have the relationship with him to allow it. Not even the staff that grew up with him would dare it out of fear. Gabe has slap my face a few times doing it over the years and poked a hole in my forehead... But 98% of the time, it is nice like this and then he wants to play bite and wrestle. I may show him playing/wrestling in a video as well.

Dolph what a good and interesting video as I have not looked at your site for a while, you certainly know Gabriel, he is truly an Arch Cheetah I feel if you were threatened he would protect and fight for you. It was interesting to find out that Cheetahs don`t eat carrion, as it is food after all, they must know something we don`t. Fresh is best!! until the next one my friend regards from John in England.

Cheetahs are in peril and not just due to their lack of genetic diversity. Some annalists suspect the cheetah will become extinct in the wild in our lifetime if things are not reversed. Only 7100 left in the wild. :( I am and will do my part to help conserve them. Plan a new cheetah breeding project for select high quality members and designed for cubs raised by their mothers and released.

It’s a shame that Cheetahs are not able to adapt quickly enough to save themselves from extinction. They cannot fight off other predators, have weak immune systems, and are prone to genetic diseases. They are lucky to have people like you who care about them and want to save them from extinction, so future generations can enjoy this wonderful animal!

It's actually human activity that is the reason that they are doing a lot worse. It's humans who need to stop controlling their own behavior. One example: "Another of the big concerns about cheetahs has been the illegal trafficking of cubs, fuelled by demand from the Gulf states, as reported by the BBC earlier this year. The young cats can fetch up to $10,000 on the black market. According to the Cheetah Conservation Fund, some 1,200 cheetah cubs are known to have been trafficked out of Africa over the past 10 years but around 85% of them died during the journey." www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38415906

Does Gabriel cop "attitude" when you've been around other cheetahs? Cats are top masters at attitude and will often "punish" their humans when they pick up the scent of other cats on their humans. (You are very lucky to have Gabriel in your life).

  • @CheetahWhisperer

    @CheetahWhisperer

    5 жыл бұрын

Thx for the question! Gabriel, and all the other approachable breeding cheetahs LOVE new scents on you; especially if they are from another cheetah. It is a safe way for one cheetah to be introduced to another... they don't need to see or touch them to greet in case they don't get along. Even the females enjoy the scent of another cheetah... they do that typical horse style 'flehmen' response where they roll their ears back, open their mouths, pull back their cheeks to get gather all the scent particles in their mouth to taste it (using their Jacob's organ on their pallet). All these cheetahs love scents on their keepers. It is actually a enrichment activity for them. Place various scented objects into their enclosures. But when it is on me or those they love and affectionate with, they just sniff and make this 'funny face' to take it all in. There is no other reaction. I did have some zebra meat juice on my sleeve once that Gabriel tried to bite off me once. I make sure i don't have food on me unless I am hand feeding it to him.

Ahhh Gabriel is very special. Although I do legally own him, I hate the concept of owning him. I bought him for a breeding project I want to start and because I love him and wanted to protect him. I didn't want anyone other than me owning him to be assured he would get the care he deserves. Gabe is his own animal and although captive as a breeding cheetah, I'd prefer he be free to visit me in an open game range. One day I will try and make that happen; granting him free will to visit me or not. That is how I interact with him now... he always comes to me rather than the other way around. His choice. It is best that way.
