Do Big Cats Purr?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Do tigers, lions, leopards and other species of big cats purr like domestic cats? We're often asked this question so check out the video for answers.
BIG CAT TV is a close look into the wild cat conservation efforts we support, and the exotic feline residents of Big Cat Rescue who we now support at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. Big Cat Rescue is a registered non-profit 501c3 so your donations are tax deductible.

    Interesting fact: The domestic cat reserves it's purr (in a positive manner) almost solely for human interaction. Feral cats that have been documented rarely, if ever purr unless it's in a negative context (possible for the endorphin reasoning in this video).

  • @ChaosNe0

    @ChaosNe0

    What I do not understand is: Why cats try to get endorphin when they are most likely to be happy, like when a human pats the cat? Does in this case the cat do it without the increasing of the endorphin-level?

  • @mistylee717

    They do purr in the nest - both the queen and the kittens. And there is often purring in the mating process. Some believe cats purring with humans is a form of neoteny (reverting to infantile behavior) - much like the pawing ("making biscuits") they do when with us. It is generally accepted purring is less about happiness and is more about communicated desire for attention. It is referred to by experts as a "distance reducing communication". I believe - as do many experts that it is more complicated than that. It has been compared to the human smile. There are many reasons a human may smile either purposefully or spontaneously and not all of them are because of a positive emotion.

    That is a very good question. Thanks for asking. The Jaguar and the Leopard are often confused with one another in zoos. Their coloring and markings are so similar that it is difficult for people to distinguish them. The difference lies in the center of the Jaguars rosettes, because unlike the leopard, the Jaguar has spots inside of its rosettes! The Jag is also a much stockier animal than its cousin, with shorter legs and tail - giving it more of a pit bull type appearance.

    When I think of their ability to sleep in the most messed up positions without getting a stiff neck or back-pain. Their ability to survive a fall from the fifth floor (injured, but still amazing). Their paws ideal to absorb impact and sneak (running feels horrible for me, even with thick soft soles; I can feel every impact from heel to head) Their ability to jump and climb, but also their sense for balance They might not be able to sense as many smells as dogs, but their noses are equally sensitive ...

I have two rescue kittens that I got in October (they are almost grown now) and they really are lovely curious creatures. It makes me cry too to think that one day I might lose them, or that they might get sick and die. I swear, I don't think I could have kids if I can't even handle the idea of losing cats.

    I asked a tiger trainer once if her tigers can purr. She showed me. I was as close to their cages as was safe and she talked toand rubbed her favorite tiger's cheeks and neck and ears. He purred, but as stated in the video, it was only exhaling. But it was surely a sound of affection and pleasure just as in a domestic cat when you stroke it.

The way you rescue them from traumatic conditions and ill health is note worthy. Big applauds to your founder Carol Baskin for devoting her life to the care of these beautiful animals. I feel so ashamed that there are people who are happy to malign her image by considering the claims of a psychopath like Joe Exotic. Good luck to you all. You have my full support

    The idea that the hyoid bone is responsible for the either/or relationship between roaring and purring was introduced by Richard Owen (1834/1835) and was established by Richard Pocock (1916). It is, however, not the only factor considered (and is to some degree discredited), and it has been suggested that e.g. vocal pads found in the larynx of the bigger cats might be partly responsible for the roaring capabilities of the pantherines, and that a more flexible larynx in general might be required for roaring. As for the hyoid bone, the main issue is whether the epihyal (C2) is cartilaginous or ossified. As for what counts as purring, the most stringent definition so far published is: Peters, Gustav. 2002. Purring and similar vocalizations in mammals. Mammal Review, vol. 32, no. 4, pp. 245-271. For more information on purring, and an exhaustive bibliography, see: purring.org

    1:55 did you hear that kids ? you can heal with sound. this is because your pure nature is simply a vibration, such as the feeling of love. try meditating to the frequency 432 hz or with what are called biaural beats (using headphones specifically for the latter) -- you could have an outer body experience and realize why YOU exist on this planet at this time !!

    wow! if purring can repair bones then maybe the medical community or the naturalists should make tapes of big cats purring and use them to heal. i know when my cats purr right next to me i sleep better and i feel better. my cats will always come and stay with my in bed when i am sick too and they will get as close as they can and purr like mad. i wonder if they are trying to help me? wouldn't that be amazing?

  • @epic0wnag

    @epic0wnag

    it doesn't work like that. The reason that it helps to repair bones is because of the internal vibrations. Listening to an audio tack isn't going to help your bones unless you put it inside of you or something like that.

    they may well be trying to help you. my mama calico usually leaves the bed cuddles to our not-a-kitten, but i get them every now and again when my chronic stuff flares up. if you sleep better and feel better with yours there and purring at you, that by itself is healing. (it's probably more on the psych end, but our bodies and minds are pretty damn linked, and good sleep is important to both if possible. also my therapist and at least one of my ex-therapists are "yeah kitteh cuddles count as therapeutic for dealing with secondhand trauma stuff".)

    I have heard that the earliest sound movies with dinosaurs in them used recordings of roaring lions for the cries of the dinosaurs (which of course no human has ever heard), which could be why to this day we have the idea that dinosaurs sounded like big cats.

    Trish O'Connor Very true, especially the use of the male lion. However, they also used the low growl of an elephant, and even it's upper vocalizations for the bird species of that period, such as a pterodactyl. Hanna Barbara was famous for that sound effect...

    "Cougars" are technically lions. They are actually called "Mountain Lions".

  • @SamuelJamesNary

    @SamuelJamesNary

    Lions are of the genus Panthera. Cougars are of the genus Puma. Cougars are not Lions. The term Mountain Lion was used in reference to the habitat in which they were found in the American West and the fact that adults are a largely single color with no markings the way other cats have markings. But the Cougar is not only found in mountainous terrain. They are also found in the Florida Everglades, where it is called the Florida Panther and even ranges into the Amazon. Scientists believe that the Lion's closest relative within the Cat family is the Tiger, due to the similar sizes and body builds between the two cats and in many ways the similar behaviors of the two cats.

  • @superblahman

    Sam Nary This is how it went... Clouded Leopard, Neofelis, evolved first, then Snow Leopard, then some extinct species, then it finally started to split off to other species. Jaguar, then this, then Leopard and Lion. Tigers are more closely related to Jaguars and Snow Leopards, then Lions. Look it up. Lions and Leopards are the youngest evolutions of Panthera.

  • @SamuelJamesNary

    @SamuelJamesNary

    10 жыл бұрын

    superblahmanofdoom That may be the order in which they evolved, but from what I've read, "Tiger" by Stephen Mills and seen in documentary evidence, is that the Tiger is more closely related to the Lion than other big cats... Which is more believable than claiming Tigers are more closely related to Jaguars. Typically, Jaguars kill by biting through the skull of the target, whereas Tigers target the spinal column or throat (depending on the size of the animal) more in common with Leopards and Lions. As far as I know, Jaguars evolved in the new world and particularly in Central to South America whereas the Tiger evolved in Asia. As the same time there is stark differences between Tigers and Jaguars. While the Tiger is bigger in terms of height and weight, the Jaguar is stockier and if scaled up to the same size as a Tiger would look like it has twice as much muscle as a Tiger does. Given that Jaguars and Leopards are about the same height and length, yet the Jaguar is twice as large as the Leopard. Yet in comparing the Tiger and Lion, the differences are hard to tell apart. The skeletons are virtually identical, and even experts can have trouble telling a Tiger's skull apart from a Lion's. In terms of their muscle mass and layout, Tigers and Lions are also virtually identical, and there is documented evidence that Tigers have also displayed surprising amounts of social behavior that was originally only thought to be present in Lions.
