Do Atheist Go to Hell? | Denise-OR | The Atheist Experience 672

The Atheist Experience 672 for August 29, 2010 with Matt Dillahunty and Jeff Dee.
WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Well with regards to the point they made about God creating hell and sending people there if he deems them as bad. According to the logic above, hell is for bad people, which means that there exists a standard for good and bad. In the argument it was also mentioned that God decides the standard and therefore is responsible for who gets sent to hell, and therefore He is saving people from destruction in His own hands. This is what I am going to challenge, based on what Scripture says about God. The Bible states that God is the same yesterday, today and forevermore (Hebrews 13:8). By the definition of being God, He exists since time immemorial, and according to this verse, His attributes also must have remained the same since time immemorial. This means that God is who He is since the beginning of time - His standards for good and bad are not as a result of choice or whim. In other words - God did not simply wake up one day and decide what is good and bad (and who is to be punished if they were bad) because He simply is who He is- the embodiment of good, and He cannot do any evil or condone any evil because He is this way by nature and definition - not by choice. Since God cannot be evil, He cannot condone sin and has no choice but to sacrifice Himself so that when we exchange our sin with His righteousness, only then we can be acceptable to Him in His holiness. If the law punishes someone for breaking it- do we call the law evil? Similarly, for the law, its righteousness must be satisfied, and anyone who breaks it and does something unrighteous in the eyes of the law must be punished. The law exists to protect society. God's law and standards exist to protect what is good.

@@chuanrenlow8506 Isaiah 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things." Creating evil is itself an evil act. Your bible contradicts itself. If God didn't *choose* what is good and evil, then good and evil are actually random labels, of no consequence themselves. And biblical law doesn't even say what is good and evil, merely what will get you sent to hell (pretty much entirely disobedience of the rules promulgated by the priests). And just so you know, many human laws have been overturned because they *were* evil. And the 1st step to overturning such a law is breaking it. Then you go to court and show the law is itself improper, and get it overturned. For that matter, many biblical laws are simply ignored these days. If God's laws are eternal, why do we eat shellfish now?

@John Lorton "because that is not how the burden of proof works " The burden of proof is on you the Atheist to prove that God does not exist. The burden of proof is also on the Theist to prove God exists. The burden of proof is not on the agnostic who doesn't mock others for their beliefs and doesn't affirm either proposition that 1. God exists or 2. God does not exist. That's how the burden of proof works and Atheists have been trying to mock Theists for years without shouldering any burden of proof by re-defining Atheism as a lack of belief in God rather than the positive affirmation that he does not exist. You know who has a lack of belief in God? A baby, not an Atheist!!! "Prove to me 12 legged fire breathing unicorn dragons don't exist. I'll wait." 1. There is good evidence that there is no 12 legged fire breathing unicorn dragons that live on earth. I have a positive affirmation that these beings do not exist on earth. I am strictly an agnostic as to whether or not these beings exist in another galaxy or another Universe and someone who claims to have some sort of spiritual experience from a god that tells them that these beings exist in another Universe, I am not allowed to mock because I can't shoulder the burden of proof required. 2. The overwhelming majority of Atheist New Testament scholars agree that the disciples experienced a group hallucination of Jesus so keep pretending that the propositions 1. 12 legged fire breathing unicorn dragons exist and 2. Jesus is the Son of God are analogous. His death on the cross is also a historical fact and the empty tomb is agreed by the majority of New Testament Scholars, too. There is evidence of Jesus' resurrection and even if you don't think it's sufficient there is literally no evidence of your caricature. ""1. "3 days later, Jesus rose again". Friday night to Sunday morning is 36 hours. How exactly is that 3 days? 3 days means we should be calling it "Easter Monday Night". 2. If God was "going to heaven", how exactly was dying on the cross a "sacrifice" ? More like a minor inconvenience, before retiring for a lfetime vacation in paradise.""" 1. He rose on the third day, not 3 days later. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. 1, 2, 3. That was what they called 3 days back then. You're just bringing your cultural bias to the Bible and concluding it's a contradiction. In fact, you're wrong that Easter would have to be at night on Monday, anytime on Monday according to the way we normally count 3 days from my experience works. It doesn't have to be literally 72 hours to be considered 3 days later today. LOL. 2. It's a sacrifice, not an eternal sacrifice. He suffered the wages of sin for all humanity by torment on a cross. How is that not a sacrifice? Calling it a minor inconvenience shows your lack of empathy. How would you like to be tortured by floggings and then being pierced onto a cross? This is just a minor inconvenience! The Christian doctrine also speaks to Jesus' sacrifice as much worse then what was visible to us. He suffered the pain of eternal separation from God in a finite amount of time. Lastly, you admitting that evil exists proves God's existence. He is the grounds of objective moral value. There is no grounds for morality on Atheism. Humans are nothing more than atoms in motion and things that we call evil are completely psychological and have been built into us by the process of Evolution. On Atheism, they are not truly evil!

And, even if it was built before I was born, there is likely to be documented evidence as to construction, citing who created it, and those who create will be human beings whose existence can be proven by other documents, ie a trail. @@chuanrenlow8506 You completely missed the point. Christians are constantly telling atheists that they choose to send themselves to hell for their lack of belief in Christ. That makes absolutely no sense when it was God who decreed that people who do not believe in him should end up in hell. That is like saying that a tyrant of the land goes house to house to give them a "choice": either follow him and live or not follow him and die. According to Christian logic the people who chose to not follow said tyrant die because of their own choosing not because that was the tyrant's decree. Now you might say that God gives us free will therefore he is providing us with a choice. It is not much of a choice when there is a threat of violence like: believe in me and spend eternity in heaven or do not believe in me and spend an eternity in hell. Normally a person would "choose" to believe for fear of going to hell, but is that belief sincere or is it fear? Is that love for Christ or God sincere or merely fear? Also, just because something is a law does not make automatically make it just.

As per my argument, the two hosts were basically challenging the Christian God by discussing about what is stated in the Bible, saying it's ridiculous that He put people in hell out of choice and tries to 'bribe' them out of it by asking them to believe in Him when He could simply spare them by choice. As you can see the focus on their discussion here is on the content of the Bible. Therefore I have to use the Bible as the basis to counter their argument. So I guess we're talking about two different topics here.

  • @krisaaron5771

@@chuanrenlow8506 I think I understand your point, but I may be wrong. The hosts are challenging the actions and reasoning of a deity based on what was written in the bible. You are presenting a different viewpoint by claiming the bible... is logical? Makes sense? The word of god? If I have that incorrectly, I apologize. But to claim any of the biblical claims are logical or accurate (the "Word of God") requires faith. Without evidence, the biblical and theological emphasis on faith as a virtue is useless. Belief/faith in anything without evidence to substantiate the claims based on that belief/faith rings empty. The hosts are saying it makes no sense to condemn people to hell when the odds or the “contest” is rigged so the condemned individual cannot win. You're saying (again, I may have misunderstood you) that the biblical claims about god and god's motives are valid. Now, we already have the writers' words about the claims and motivation of the deity in question. But if the CONTENTS of the Bible are based on irrational reasoning, I don't see how you can use the bible as the basis to counter the hosts' argument. Example: Donald claims has a cure for a deadly disease. He has little to no scientific proof for his claim, only a “hunch”, a “feeling”. He argues that his hunch and his feeling are a substitute for evidence. But even if his “cure” is eventually proven to work, all his hunches and feelings are worthless because he can't prove he has psychic powers to see the future and he doesn't have the education to back up his hunch/feeling. We don't rely on hunches and feelings to prove science, even though scientists may follow their hunches and feelings to find an answer to a problem. They're already scientists and working from solid knowledge and a usable base of evidence, so their hunches and feelings are coming from years of education and experience. Donald doesn't have any of that; he's a gambler, not a scientist. He threw the dice and made a bet; that's all his hunch and feeling are. A bet, with nothing to back it up. It's like betting that the number of gumballs in the jar is odd and not even. There's no evidence or logic to back up that bet. That's what arguing about god's intent is. We can criticize and debate the biblical writers' reasoning on a topic, but we can't pretend that a metaphysical being is real and has given those writers particular insight because we don't have solid evidence proving their insights came from an actual god and not pulled out of their... Please forgive me if I've misunderstood your position on the topic.

Assuming that God, as the Creator, has no rights (no sovereignty), but is that a reasonable position? Can your parents make no demands upon you that other people cannot? If a pregnant woman can choose to abort her child, why can't God choose whether you live or die? Doesn't He stand in the same position? [Remember that you in relationship to eternal life are pretty much in the same position as a fetus in relation to this life in your answer.]

    @BigSlimyBlob

@@michelepaige8080 I imagine that you're playing christian's advocate and making an exceedingly poor argument on purpose, but I'll answer anyway. A child needs to learn how to live in society, so it's perfectly reasonable for a parents to have some level of authority over their children for part of their lives. However, that authority is highly limited. You can't do anything you want to your children just because you made them. You can't torture them if they disobey, you can't murder them if they disobey, And you can't gaslight the child by misassigning blame (as described earlier), or that child will grow up to be messed up, and probably abuse their own children too. Additionally, after a child grows up, the parent has no right over it anymore; having created a child doesn't mean you can enslave that child for life. Especially not if you somehow have the magic power to make that child live forever. A pregnant women is not at all in the same position as some sky wizard with the power to create people and give them a second, eternal existence. First, an embryo or early fetus isn't a person. Second, even if they were, they would be mostly mindless and not autonomous), while a sky wizard making a fully formed person would be dealing not only with an actual person, but an autonomous one, and the wizard would have no right to tell it to do anything unless the person were violating the wizard's basic personal rights. Third, the sky wizard's creation isn't using the sky wizard as an incubator (and certainly not against its will) so the sky wizard can't call upon its right to bodily autonomy to let its creation die. Fourth, a woman terminating an embryo's existence is where the story ends. Even if it were left to become a person, would have a limited-time existence. But the sky-wizard's creation would (in the scenario you're describing) exist forever in its secondary, after-death form, even if the sky wizard murdered this person. Oh, and it's much, much worse than that, because the wizard is doing this even to its creation's descendants, people that he didn't in fact create. 1. A woman chooses to abort an embryo that is not a person and that even if it were would have no right to use her body as an incubator 2. A sky wizard makes unreasonable demands of an adult person he created, and when the adult doesn't obey, the wizard murders that person, magically makes them keep existing forever after death, and tortures them for eternity Do you think the embryo and the creation are "pretty much in the same situation"? Would you rather be the embryo that doesn't get to become a person, or the wizard's creation who gets murdered and tortured forever if it doesn't agree to live as a slave? We are fortunate that the absolute monster in scenario 2 is only a work of fiction, the creation of primitive people in the middle-east who didn't have the means to understand the universe and made up very very silly stories to fill in the blanks. If humanity discovered that this wizard was real, it would have to focus all its efforts into finding it and killing it.

As an Atheist, we do not believe in a God or a Heaven. We also, do not believe that a Satan or a Hell exist. If a God would not allow you to enter Heaven if you don't believe in God, what makes you believe that a Satan would allow you to enter Hell if you don't believe in Satan.

All you have to ask a Christian is “how much work they did for their salvation?” And if they say “none, that Jesus did 100% of the work for my salvation.” Then ask them “then why isn’t so-and-so saved?” Christian’s believe it’s the decision, which means they did have to do some work in order to be saved, even tho they claim Jesus did 100% of the work for their salvation on the cross. They just can’t admit how hypocritical and illogical their thinking is.

That assumes that a decision is "work." (The decision is actually grace, or the Holy Spirit's work in you.) In Christian theology, it isn't work (or, perhaps more accurately, it's not YOUR work, it's the Spirit's work in you). To avoid a straw man, you must give the other side its argument, not yours. In short, you make the choice, but God (through the Spirit) does the work.

The most awful thing about the concept of people going to hell, if there would be one, isn't so much how one would get there, but the idea that angels and demons can apparently come and go as they please yet humans supposedly can't. The idea that god would create humans powerless and feeble compared to angels and demons to that extent, means that god would be an extremely despicable being for creating such a huge difference in capabilities between the humans, and the angels and demons. If angels and demons have a shitload of powers and can come and go as they please, and even go to and from heaven as they please like satan apparently did in the book of job, then humans should be able to as well.

Why would atheists go to hell? They are just skeptic and careful who to trust. It's a good trait. They don't blindly follow the herd.

@@followerofchrist9800 Well, if god was able to convince everybody, they WOULDN'T have to deny it. To deny something exists, one has to be unconvinced of its existence. You cannot believe something without being convinced because you have to be convinced in order to believe. Being convinced is not a choice, therefore we are not willingly denying it. We just CAN'T believe it.

I do though, yet genuinely not knowing something, you shouldn’t be into fault for that. There’s not actual signs.
