These board games are a cool D&D introduction, and if you own several, you have an excellent collection of Minis and boards to run a campaign with.

These boxes are a great deal for the minis.... you can usually pick the boxed games up on amazon in the 45-50 dollar price range and you get approx 40 or so minis in the box.... if you're into painting miniatures, this is a great deal.... I like painting them to use in my actual D&D campaigns.....

While I agree with many others that the graphic design is fairly bland and could use a nice makeover, I do really appreciate that they've kept it compatible with all the previous games in the system. I think there would be a much larger outcry if they changed it up to the point where you couldn't shuffle the cards and tiles from the previous games together.

Nice overview. @ 7:50 you got that backwards. the dragon is the monster placement space. the elemental symbols are used for the adventure 5 scenario in which when there is a fourth symbol of the same type ie air then the air elemental villain is placed on the tile. It adds advantage disadvantage which is a 5th edition mechanic. it also has town scenarios. I like the art a lot.

when buying alternate advancement, if character A wants to buy tier 1 plus 1 to dmg and Character B wants to as well, they each pay 500 gold right? For the tier 1 for each of them? Or is it 600 for that second character to buy the tier 1 +1 dmg since Char A already bought it?

I got Castle Ravenloft when it came out and I guess it wasn't what I expected or hoped for. I started playing it again solo during the pandemic and decided to accept it for what it is. This and C.R. have the same character classes: Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Wizard with 3 having the same races, too. So I guess if combined you'd get more skill cards to choose from, but not true new characters. It looks like they changed how you level up, and added critical success and failure (1 & 20). And maybe trap encounter cards for tiles with trap tokens? I'm wondering which follow-up would work best with Castle Ravenloft?

Really like these games; have the first three and they're just staight up D&D monster-slaying action, with some other goals tossed in to keep you interested. Pure, simple, fun. I'm just a little surprised they didn't take the opportunity to redirect the series a little. A different environment would have been worth the price of not being able to use the tiles with the other games (we've got three massive stacks already). Even if only half were forest or something. I just have no compelling reason to add this one, and I'm a big fan of these.

i played this and was so excited to give it a go, having grown up with heroquest and dungeon. it was... ok. more linear than heroquest, and too complicated for most people these days. oh how i miss the relish of complex board games! but their day is sort of done; computers handle the complexity way better than folks these days, and, maybe that’s good. we wasted a ton of time poring over our dnd books, and it was fun, but in hindsight, games like dungeon were way better. good review, that’ll do, pig.

The only thing Tom mentioned that made this version unique was the markings for the trap tokens. There are larger character upgrades in this version that were not in say, Ashardalon or Ravenloft. Also there’s a cool town mystery sequence in this one that you don’t find in the others. That is all.

Strange that they went from the "roll a 20 and spend 5xp" levelling mechanic to "pay 1000gp". I know that the Legend of Drizzt doesn't have a need for gold per se, but I wonder why they changed it. Were they just concerned that people weren't leveling enough, or at least not regularly enough? How long does it take to collect 1000gp in the game?

  • @KKDT

As far as I see it, this is optional way to level up *between* adventures, when you play campaign - you spend 1k gold and your hero starts next adventure with level 2. During adventure d20+5xp rule should stay in normal way. (And instead of leveling you can invest your gold between adventures in other bonuses, like these +1dmg or +1hp tokens / working like some enchantments or potions).

You know, as simple as these games are, they just work. You can quickly teach someone the rules, and you don't have your friends pissed at you for being a dick (Descent 2nd OL deck anyone?). Compare this to something like "Shadows of Brimstone" that still has you searching through poorly written instructions after 3 plays and I say it's a win for anyone with friends that will play, but aren't big into table top games.

The D&D IP is a burden on these games. People insist on expecting a P&P RPG feeling despite it stating it is an adventure board game. It's a dungeon run, a co-op hack & slash, and a very fun one at that. Our playgroup was avoiding these type of games because we want to play together as a team, we're tired of someone always having to be the bad guy, and Myth was completely unplayable out of the box. Thankfully we got Legend of Drizzt and Castle Ravenloft to scratch that itch.

I know! I hear people pronounce it that way so often. Where is the second "i" coming from? When you say the word "list" or "mist" do you struggle to avoid saying "lisit" or "misit"? If not, just change the "s" to a "z" and you're there! Having said that, Tom, I would pay money to hear you pronounce the word "Menzoberranzan". Just an idea for next year's Kickstarter stretch goals.

I agree with Tom, this is a co-op puzzle game, NOT a dungeon crawler. I disagree with Tom when he says its fun. I would much rather play Dead of Winter for a co-op or Last night on Earth if I wanted models OR pretty much any other dungeon crawler for a light RPG. For a pseudo RPG there is so little choice to be made in this game. Almost always there will be only one correct course of action. "Well, I have to explore or bad stuff happens so lets explore". "Well, i'm fighting so I guess I attack'. "Well its the boss so everybody pop your daily". And it very often boils down to 1 person telling everyone what to do because its painfully obvious if you don't do it your character gets punished. Personally I buy these games, and throw out the rules, and player cards and use the components for playing better games or RPGs.

I have wrath of ashardalon and it honestly doesn't get any playtime at all. I was so excited when I got it but the game mechanics just kill the experience. You are pretty much forced to always explore which means you end up with a ton of monsters on the board and you are usually running away from them instead of actually fighting. The monsters always get the first attack. There's no way to avoid it. You explore - the monster comes out and then it immediately activates. It's not that the game is hard - it just doesn't feel like a good dungeon crawl.

  • @jamesedward3619

If you get the Elven Cloak the monsters don't attack immediately. They have to wait for ages then. Plus we house rule it anyway with a stealth roll.

A stealth house rule sounds like a good idea. I don't know if I'll be able to get the game to the table again though with all the other great games we have. Why play it when Agricola, Pandemic, King of Tokyo, and 7 Wonders all play great. I'm also not a fan of having so many scenario specific tokens. Searching through the bag for them when a specific card comes up.

  • @jamesedward3619

    @jamesedward3619

Ryan Wilshere Yeah I feel you bro. Always hate it when games have too many components. That's my big complaint with so many Fantasy Flight games. With the D&D Adventure System though we usually don't play the specific scenarios. We just play random dungeons where everything that happens depends on the tiles and cards. Avoids too much fiddling around with specific components and what not.

I agree 100%. Game looks cool but mechanics are atrocious. Practically every other dungeon crawler does it better. Play Super Dungeon Explore, Descent, Mice and Mystics, Hero Quest, pretty much anything is better. Hell I think the Pathfinder card game is a better dungeon crawler than the DnD boardgames.

  • @stevequincy388

Ryan Wilshere If you look on the boardgamegeek website, there are some fantastic fan-made advanced rules for these games that take out a lot of the crappy mechanics (like monsters always attacking first). There's even a great character leveling system for campaign play, all the way to level 9 I believe. I liked these games a lot before, but once I discovered these "advanced" rules, now I love them. Too bad WOTC didn't implement some of these rules, but oh well.

Anyone going into this game thinking it's a dungeon crawl will be disappointed, because it really isn't. This is a co-op board game that happens to take place in dungeon-y spaces using D&D combat mechanics. If that's not your thing, there are plenty of other co-ops to choose from...even the zombie ones...if you're not sick to f**king death of zombie games.

Tom basicly reviewed the previous games. This standalone/expansion has a lot going for it. The biggest change is the focus on campaigning. Players are encouraged to play the game as a campaign and the game even comes with coins that players can earn and spend on buffs and upgrades between games. The game also customise the monster and encounter decks depending on how well or how badly you played. You even keep your level between games. The minis in this game is also much better quality than the previous games. I feel the focus on campaigns are a nice addition to the series and big reason owners of the previous games might want to consider this iteration.

I bought Wrath of Ashardalon and Descent 1 & 2...even sprung for Imperial Assault. Every time I regret my purchase after I gave into the "new shiny, appeal" and rave reviews. At the end of the day if I want an RPG-campaign I revert back to real RPG's(I play DnD, Iron Kingdoms & SW: Edge of the Empire). I understand the niche that these "light RPG boardgames" are meant to fill, but they never succeed as scratching that RPG-itch(for me or my family, anyways). They become incredibly fiddly and, at least for me, never capture the feeling of an epic journey...instead feeling like just a smash-up of disjointed firefights. I wanted to like all of them...but at the end of the day they all feel like combat skirmishes, not role-playing games. I am going to try to resist the urge to buy the next big entry in this genre...I should know better. I think I've persisted in the vain hope that I can get an RPG experience in a boardgame. I think all of these types of games could act as stepping stones from other boardgames to true RPG's for the uninitiated, however.

  • @Raphaelus13

The thing is, they were designed as a combat skirmish game. As a fan of Descent, it would never cross my mind to recommend it to fill a tabletop role game niche. Bringing this mindset or expectation is prejudicial to its enjoyment. Commonly, when people bring the comparative term, "RPG" refers to the pop phenomenon of the rpg game (think the elements video games use/ fantasy/ XP), and not tabletop role games. The heart of TTRPGs is definitively telling stories socially. Swords and orcs are just the frosting. When people in forums ask if an app or whatever game, can serve as a RPG substitute for their short time, I am always confused.

William Smith So do what any other self respecting GM would do and use those as a toolkit for a system you enjoy. I mean, seriously, it's so easy to tweak these games to be exactly what you want it to be, and I can't imagine a RPGer being the guy saying "But I wanted that out of the box!" Okay fine, I said that too then took matters into my own hands. ;)

William Smith - I guess you just expect too much from a board game. Not wanting to sound paternal but that is why these two game genres exist in the first place. Although some might argue that playing D&D 4th edition gives you a boardgame experience with a roleplaying game... ;) Now, having said this, you might want to look into SHADOWS OF BRIMSTONE. This is one boardgame that is so close to an rpg I think you might like it. You should look into it.

Big disappointment. I never thought the original system was very good. They would have been better off redesigning the system rather than just making another game for the old system. They completely missed the opportunity to make an expansive world where characters to level up from game to game. This is pretty much an expectation now with these dungeon crawl systems. The encounter mechanic when you don't explore a tile was not a very good one imo. I just took options out of the game where it was all about moving to the next tile and not interacting with anything on the tiles. If they had redesigned the system, but kept it so that you would use the minis from the other games, tiles and such they could have been step ahead of what the newer systems are trying to do. They could have produced cards for higher level monsters and so forth and set up a line of expansions and new adventures for leveling persistent characters. Plus they have the D&D name. There are just better options out there right now, and probably better ones on the horizon. Most of them are all kickstarter babies and have suffered from lack of adequate testing and development. Wiz Kids really coulda shoulda made something that topped Shadows of Brimstone, and even Myth with all of it's problems. They somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Epic fail.

The design quality of the pieces as well as the diversity of the gameplay seems poor. I expect a much higher standard at this day of age when it comes to these big IP's. An D&D inspired game should be grand and fantastical, it's not the days of ol' AD&D, and it sure aint Basic Roleplay or Rolemaster, it's D&D and this just feels very pedestrian, not even grimdark, just bland in gameplay and production quality and that's a real shame and another wasted opportunity.

It is strange, gameplay is fine, miniatures are amazing and cards and tiles look so... bland and boring. I don't know what it is, but for me the graphic design of those is kinda off.

Uuggghh Tom...I mean seriously, c'mon you are better then this. 1. The DRAGON symbol is where you place the monster and how many you draw for the tile. 2. Not every tile has a monster that gets placed on it. 3. The back of the monster cards have a different design so they are pretty much not compatible with the other 3. (Bonehead mistake by Wizkids) Not hating on Tom, bcoz Tom and this channel has done wonders for board gaming, but just thought he rushed this out before he actually played the newest version of the game. Yes small changes but still, their are changes.

***** Which is fine for me. I personally do not like role playing. Back in the 80s, I heard of the name D&D, but had little to no knowledge about it, except for the cartoon and Gauntlet (had no idea they were officially D&D - funny that). Years later I enjoyed every D&D computer game between Eye of the Beholder and Neverwinter Nights. When I found out that the "real" D&D was role-playing (e.g., "getting into character"), a page full of stats, a whole lot of reading, and required someone to spend days or weeks setting up a campaign for everyone else, I simply wasn't interested. I wanted to play a board game, not try my hand at ad-lib acting in some long drawn-out campaign with a piece of paper and a pen. When Castle Ravenloft appeared, I was one of the first to buy it. I thought to myself - "at last, D&D the way I always imagined it" (except for the computer games of course). These games fill exactly the right niche for people like myself.

Joseph Lynn Graphic design looks totally fine to me. Nothing gaudy on the cards, the graphic is nicely positioned, the borders are crisp, everything is very clear & easy to read. What do you not like about the cards?

President Jyrgunkarrd They are boring. Simple as that. They look cheap and unimaginative. Compare with Descent 2nd Edition or Shadow's of Brimstone tiles to see how tiles can be while maintaining all of your mentioned positives. I don't disagree with your points, I just know from experience they could have made the extra effort.

  • @ItWasSaucerShaped

Joseph Lynn This is going to be a matter of personal preference, but the Descent 2E cards are quite busy & filled with decorative elements that sometimes look rather gaudy. The 4E Board Game cards don't feature illustrated details that are individual to each card (there is no graphical representation of the Tide of Iron or Battle Axe, for example), and I agree that this makes them boring, but that's different from having poor graphic design. Shadows of Brimstone is extremely gorgeous as far as the tiles are concerned, but again, that's related to the detailed nature of the artwork - not the graphic design.

Miles Stevenson Descent 2.0 vs D&D Adventure board games....answer? Both! Price point? Really? I bought the first three D&D board games (ravenloft, ashard, drizzt) for about 120 bucks. Descent was $60. You get about 40 miniatures per game...all pretty equal in detail and quality. FFG gives you tokens for bosses or whatever (just like imperial assault) while the D&D games give you nice big models! I love both games but Descent nickel and dimes you. Love Descent and don't want to spend a fortune for minis? Get the Descent 1.0 conversion kit and use the multitude of cheap Wizards of the Coast minis as proxy. Both games are great and completely different in own ways. Use that to your advantage as a gamer and have fun with both!

+Suzumebachigr I've been playing D&D since '79 and i'm not a fan of 4th or 5th. As to what you need, a DM's Guide, Players handbook and if your just starting i would suggest a good low level module. Of course if you want you can get a MM(Monster Manuel) to add monsters to the adventure. from there it depends on where you want to go. If you can find an old Forgotten Realms book, snag it, the new realms suck. The book will give you a whole world to play in that the DM can alter as he pleases.

The "point" is that these 1- Take MUCH less time 2- Require no DM 3- Can be played by as few as 1 person... and 4- are simple to learn and jump in, unlike most "real" RPGs Perhaps you consistently have a group of seasoned, knowledgeable "real" RPG players available to you any time you want to play. The majority of the rest of the gaming world doesn't have that. You can pick these games up and play them easily and only take an hour or two to run a fun little session. ALSO.... this is a GREAT introduction to RPG's for kids. Playing this game w/ a kid is a LOT of fun.
