DNA Family Secrets: Do I have sperm donor siblings?

Podcast: Tink's story • DNA Family Secrets: Do...
turiking.co.uk/
Over 45,000 people in the UK are conceived through sperm donors.
25-year-old Tink, only found out as a teenager that she is one of them.
Tink wants to test her DNA to learn about her ancestry and find out if she might have any half brothers or sisters.
So, you were conceived via a sperm donor?
Yeah.
When did you find all this out?
I was 17. I was about 6 months pregnant, and my dad called me downstairs. So, I sat down, and I was just sitting on my phone, and he was like, ‘no I really need to tell you something’ and I was like okay. And then he just said that he had a vasectomy, they tried to reverse it, to have me, but it just didn't work. So, he then said, ‘oh we used a sperm donor’. And I just burst into tears, didn't know what to do.
So, up until that point?
I had no idea.
You thought that was your dad, your biological father?
Yeah, he was the man I was living with, yeah, thought that was my dad.
It was just surreal.
Would you like to know who the sperm donor is or was?
I want to find out if I've got siblings and I want to find out, you know, where I come from, but I just feel like my dad is my dad and I don't want to upset him, at all.
So, in an ideal world, what would you like to happen, how would you like to see this play out?
I find a sibling, we get on, that would be amazing, and just to find out where I come from. Have I got any heritage in different countries I don't know? If there's other people there, then it takes away the feeling of… well I was just born in the clinic.
Until now the only thing Tink has known about her sperm donor, is that he was a student from Leeds.
The results of Tink's DNA test are back and she's meeting Turi to find out the truth.
Hey.
Oh, Tink how are you?
I'm good thanks, how are you?
How you feeling?
All right, nervous, very nervous. Might sound strange for other people but for me its very life changing.
Totally, no it's monumental.
Alright Tink well I'll wait here, good luck, you'll be brilliant and then we'll catch up in a bit. Good luck.
Thank you.
Hello, come on in.
Okay, so when we first met, and you had two main questions. So, first was could we tell you anything about your father's ancestry and then the second bit was that you were interested in seeing if you could find any sort of half donor siblings. Okay, so I'm going to start with the ancestry side of stuff.
So, we take your DNA, and we are analysing it against millions of people and when we did that, and we took away the bits that we knew must come from your mum, that actually gave us a really clear answer. So, your father's DNA is pointing really strongly to Northern Ireland.
That is just amazing.
Yeah, did you have any kind of thoughts as to what…
No, I never thought that I just thought he was a student from Leeds, that's all I've ever known. So, to know he's not, it's just mad.
Yeah.
Mad.
The DNA match is really concentrated around this area, so South Derry, Londonderry, East Antrim.
So, we think it's pretty safe to say your dad was Irish.
I wasn't expecting that, at all, at all.
Yeah.
I can't get over that.
That completely ties in with the genetic evidence, absolutely.
I can't believe I'm basically half Irish.
Yeah.
That's mind-blowing.
So, the other thing that you were kind of interested in, was, could you find any donor half siblings. So, we helped you get signed up to a number of donor conceived registers and you've been waiting for information to come back so it looks like you might have a match.
Okay, so that's the email that's come in, this is for you.
We have looked for relationships between you and other donor conceived individuals and have found a link that suggests that you are likely to share a donor, with at least one other on the register.
It's exciting.
We will be undertaking some additional tests to help further verify any links and we will be in contact with you again once those are complete.
Okay, so looking at those results it sounds like you have a match, but we really need to be absolutely sure, which is why this extra testing is going to be needed.
That's the really good start.
Okay and they're on the register.
They're on the register, so that's the thing, the registers are only as good as whoever signs up to them.
So, if they are does that mean, because they're on it as well, that they looking?
Probably, if two people have joined, they're looking for donor conceived siblings.
So, hopefully at the end of this you will have what you were looking for.

The father could have easily been an Irish student at Leeds. The 2 parameters are not exclusive

I know that my father was a donor in the late 1950's. I have my DNA on several sites in case a half-sibling turns up. If they do, I look forward to sharing medical data and family history with them.

Children must be told at the earliest opportunity about their birth/sperm donor/ donor egg/ adopted. Better to be told as a child than finding out as an adult

I read of an incident in the US in which a man unknowingly had an affair with his daughter (then in her early 20’s). She got pregnant, which turned out badly.

I know you comment is 2 years old, but there has recently a case in the US of a lady learning that her first boyfriend was actually her half brother. I can't remember specifically if neither of them knew at the time that they were donor conceived or if only one of them knew, but either way, they were intimate as teens and then discovered 5 or so years later that they shared the same sperm donor. The lady is part of a group campaigning to try to change the laws in the US around donor conception to make it safer and better for the donor-convieved people.

Well. I guess this is going to prevent a lot of people from having children from sperm donation, if an anonymous donor is going to be harassed.

Prior to 2005 donors were guaranteed the right to anonymity though they can waive that right if they wish. Since a legislative change in 2005 donors must consent to the release of their identity when any donor-conceived child reaches the age of 18. Donor concieved children can access non-identifying information about their donors at age 16 and the donor’s full identity at 18.

I agree........... all these clips seem very lack luster and void of a lot of further details that would make it enjoyable. I understand they are respectful of the privacy of many of these folk but just confirming they're from a certain place or saying "yep you have a dad" is ... boring? Lost and Found is superior if you're looking for something to watch :)

@@MsChifran These are just clips from longer episodes where more details are revealed. I agree that there's no point in uploading these, considering that there's no option for people from outside of the UK to watch the whole episodes.

HELLO! I have a LOT of sperm. The problem is different, namely: I have a neurosis, and I don't even have very good blood tests. But they all come from a flu that was about to kill me. Thus I thank the Lord Jesus Christ that I am alive. One more thing: Does chemical treatment affect sperm quality?! Sincerely, Erwin.

The whole sperm-donor thing is so wrong on so many levels. Human beings deserve parents, not DNA donors. We NEED to have a connection with parents. They are showing someone who had parents, who was in effect 'adopted,' but for those who are just a designer product by a single woman... devastating and a crime against human dignity. Just adopt an existing child, already. Don't let them grow up knowing that their 'father' masturbated into a cup for money and didn't want anything to do with them or knowing them or taking responsibility for them. One of the most devastating things a child can realize is, 'I was not conceived in love.'

Well the thing is that the sperm donor isnt a father He is just a man that provided the sperm needed for her father to be able to get a kid. Where the sperm came from shouldnt matter.

@@carinaejag But it does matter! That's the whole point, it matters to people who have been conceived through sperm donation. You can dismiss people's feelings all you want, but it doesn't change their reality. Look how much time, money and emotional effort people put into looking for their sperm donor relatives. Why would they put themselves through it if it didn't matter?

That's not how it works..Yes a child can have a very good father even if they have zero blood connection, but a biological father has a lot of influence on how the child turns out. It's character and looks of course, but on many levels the genetics matters A LOT. Especially to the child. That's why I'm horrified how people can just find an egg donor online of a 20 year old girl and get it inseminated with a 40 year old man that she's never met and then the fertilised egg gets implanted in a 40 year old woman that sometimes doesn't even tell the child how it was conceived. And since the child will get to see photos of her/his mother pregnant and maybe even during childbirth, the child will never know unless it happens to take a dna test. Of course I understand the situation of women that are having difficulty conceiving, but never lie to the child. It's a person, not an it you buy online like a bag.

Figaro it must be nice never having to be in a position to even have to consider fertility treatment options. You are a bitter person to think what you have written here. At least children born with the help of donors are the most wanted children out there. Not some drunken one night stand surprise, or other unplanned pregnancy.
