As this story goes on, it is becoming incredibly clear that the GM had it out for this player for some insane reason. And NEVER force pregnancy on PCs. Even retired PCs. I let NPCs get pregnant, but never PCs.

2 things. First I doubt the DM had it out for the player. I think the DM just didn't know what to do with a woman as bard and just thought of the stereotype of a horny bard and oh yeah pregnancy can be something that happens to a woman if she has sex. Second when I DM I decide that with the player. Same goes with relationships in general for PC's. If I see the character wants something from a PC or tries to engage some relationship I will talk with them about it. I won't initiate it because it often feels forced if a DM initiates a relationship. Same would go for pregnancy in my opinion. If the player wants their character to be pregnant thats fine with me as long as they don't want to make the baby making an rp with me. Not something I am into. but hey if you wanna have a pregnant character thats fine with me. I just warn every character that if they play a pregnant char they will have to be careful as I won't spare them just because their char is pregnant.

The dice said: "we've seen his plans for the finale, you dont want any part of it. This won't be pretty, but we're doing you a favor." And proceeded to give the two results that ended her character's story immediately and fucked the GM's plans for that unborn npc.

I've had a DM do something like this to another character at our table and myself in two separate campaigns. It was also 3.5. I'm not sure why that's the GO-TO for some DMS for long standing adventurer females. Please Dms, even if your campaigns going WONDERFULLY, please ask your players before doing stuff like this that 100% changes the outlook that character will have on their life. I feel like its a given, but from someone who had it done to them, it really fucking sucks. Also, be sure to communicate with your DM, if you hate it say you hate it, don't lie. If its a DM worth their salt they'll figure out another plot hook.

No matter how the Forced Pregnancy was presented, the only answer, after two years of being strung along, two years of being weaker than the actual NPCs, and two years of being shafted in every respect, would be "I take the nearest sword and commit C-section on the spot." DM either allows a retcon, or your character dies and you quit the campaign in protest. It's your character and your story to tell, not the DMs. If you can't even have that, then neither does the DM.

I personally wouldn't have been able to proceed after the DM explicitly ignored "don't make my character pregnant". I would've given them 1 chance to retcon it, then left after wishing my compatriots best of luck. I hate when DMs force things. It's been nearly two decades since I last played, but I had a half elf that succumbed to a sleep potion slipped into my ale. Then after we were blackbagged, bound next to one another, the DM slips a pocket knife into one of the players hands so they can use it as an IN-GAME knife to free us.....yeahhhh I was out after that.

@timwoods2852 apologies for not being clear. The DM forced us into the scenario he created. Elves & half elves aren't susceptible to sleep potions or spells. And when he realized that none of us had a way to escape from our bondage, he hands a player a knife that suddenly enters the player's inventory. Forgive me for being stubborn or obstinate, but if we're in a situation where we're going to die, let us die. But even more than that, don't force scenarios onto characters if things aren't progressing the way you want it to.

  • @MarkDarc87

@xtrem5428 sorry for not being clear. For one, half elves are immune to sleep potions, so that should not have happened. Secondly, he forced us into a situation where we were screwed; no one had a means of escaping. He always planned that we would be captured, but in the event that we couldn't escape, he was gonna use "DM Magic" to give us a get out of jail free card??? No, just let the story run its course: if we die, we die. It's not like we were level 15, we weren't even 4 sessions in.

I remember having a problem in one of my campaigns where I felt relatively useless. And this is despite me having a dragon for my subclass (ok, drake, but also does become dragon). You would think that cool right? Nope. Had to hide the drake almost all the time. I couldn’t even use my feat without revealing my dragon associations, and I honestly couldn’t even use the skills that my class is made for. Didn’t even really get to use my tool proficiencies over 90% of the time. So I sat down my dm and we discussed. I made it very clear how useless I felt. We spent a good few hours working it out as I laid out my issues. It was a slow transition to implement things but we did get to a point where it felt like it eased up. I got to actually use my drake and use my feat and stopped feeling like I was fighting with a hand and half behind my back. I managed to get to use my tools, and was given more opportunities that were just me to roll for the skills I focused my build into (and the player who’s build wouldn’t have usually had that stuff but did because of how he later built, backed off and let me do those checks more, because he realized he overstepped despite my session 0 communication on how I was building, which I got an apology for as it had slipped his mind, wasn’t his intent as he built that way for something else, which he focused on later). Honestly it worked pretty neatly. Still didn’t feel amazing though, because of that hiccup. But it finally turned around officially when we got to the enemy side’s npc that was a dear friend of my character from their backstory. Oh I had a blast in that scene! See, I had also discussed with my dm what my preferred playstyle actually is, which is pretty roleplay and storytelling heavy, and how I tended to be adaptable but really was enthusiastic about that part. This arc was already coming up, was an arc planned from the beginning, so my dm and I worked on dropping foreshadowing throughout the sessions leading up to it. By the time the official reunion scene rolled up and played out, the rest of the party lost their minds at it. It felt really amazing how invested the party suddenly got into it. I got pestered for questions on things for weeks after. The party is still invested too. Now, for me, this is what I like. My dm even made a cool moment of giving me an upgraded armor by embedding it into that scene with a very story strong reason for it to happen in character. So yeah, I stopped feeling so useless because I started moving the plot and my connection also helped save our party and give them much needed rest. I also got to take the time to roleplay out the reasons I took the tool proficiencies I did. Now, this is still a work in progress. This group still has its hiccups. We all have different styles and different priorities at times but the good thing is that everyone wants to include each other and make sure we all feel good about things. Which is honestly very rewarding in and of itself. Lol, you would think that that over half the party being, technically, evil would be the issues. It’s really not. The funny party is that we are a mostly evil party who still does heroic things…just…evilly. Lol. (My character is technically one of the “good” ones but the fact that their dearest person, the npc mentioned before, is someone who is on the antagonist’s side and who my character has sworn loyalty to, and has been in love with since childhood, yeah that makes a very big grey area). Anyway! Enough rambling from me. Maybe I’ll come back and edit this but mean time, thanks for reading!!!

I never really got a chance to get into DnD, because not just one, but BOTH of the first campaigns I tried to start ended right as I joined (in 1 the DM disappeared and in the other one of the core players disappeared and both were canceled as a result) and being a shy introvert, all the courage I had to join those two was used up and I just gave up.... But morally speaking, if you're a player in a DnD campaign and the DM tries to force something on your character you're clearly not ok with, I think you should have 100% right to retcon it with all your might. If the DM refuses then you should appeal to your fellow players to pressure the DM until they acquiesce.

What I heard was, "All I had from the random dungeon rewards was a game-breaking ability to just crit whenever, plus some other cool stuff, and all I got from my free background stuff was an OP rogue character that would never betray me. Also, when I was given the chance to say that I was upset, I lied and said I was having fun, and it turns out I actually wasn't the 'chosen one'. Wah." The DM is kind of shitty, but the OP's also a bit of a whiney ingrate. Don't blame the DM if RNGesus doesn't smile upon you and you can't think of a way to use what you got. You think this is Baldur's Gate 3 where you can just plan out what items and abilities your character will get? That's not how D&D works, and even if you think it is, it's your fault too for not speaking up.

The "Other cool stuff" were completely useless, there wasn't a single challenge where those came into play or would have been useful through the entire campaign. You're right about me lying, I shouldn't have done that in hindsight, but don't talk like you know how strong those were, because they weren't at all. As strong as that nat 20 skill was, I could only use it two times per day. I am right to complain about his gacha system, cause that system shouldn't have existed in the first place and that's what I told the dm. It created way too much power difference between players and it allowed the dm to tailor make the skills of the npcs since those weren't random at all. And since the DM created them on the spot, it made absolutely no sense. I didn't blame the dm because of rngod not being my favour, but for how shitty he treated my character giving her no plot revelance at all when he did for all the other party member, he even gave them powerful story skills, for not allowing me to partecipate in the final boss fight after 4 years of awful treatment and for not listening or even ignoring my complains. That rogue npc wasn't even avaible at all times and as I said, I wanted MY character to be powerful not have a cohort. On the reddit thread I explained even more, the paladin even shared his thoughts.

She gave in far too many times so that she wouldn't hurt the DM's feelings, and simply hoping that things would get better. Fun fact, they don't. From what I'm seeing, the DM eventually recognized the power gap and attempted to write in a character arc for the PC, but either kicked it off too late, never fully hashed out a real plan/couldn't figure out how to shift the direction of the campaign, or simply placed the arc as a side quest option. Put your foot down, didn't be afraid to hurt the DM's feelings every now and then, and do not roll over and accept what happens if you don't like it.

Sounds like your GM didn't like female characters or thought very chauvinistically against them. Unfortunately there is a large majority of GMs like this and is growing amongst the internet LFG D&D community. Also, I feel your pain about being cut out of every important moment in a campaign. For 30+ years this has happened to me as a player. Not once have I been part of our played any role in the important parts of the campaigns by being cut out of the scenes by the GMs. That's why I was forced to GM to right the wrongs in the community. Maybe I'll be a part of a one shot before I pass on from this world and the hobby I love. Who knows.

I see it opposite. The person was forced to marry a NPC and get pregnant when the person said that's not what they wanted. The DM could have admitted they didn't have any ideas for the player and worked with them to make one. No, just a NPC friend. It sounds like no emotional bond was formed. If the DM wanted to make the NPC into reality, then why not a special epilogue with only them working out on how to introduce the NPC or get a new special power? This did not happen. It was just a NPC, something the person didn't care for and even another NPC they're forced to carry. Is it really wrong to WANT to feel important in a game where you are a team and you can't do ANYTHING to actually be useful?

@@Daltonisntabot And who's fault is that? The player failed to actually change any of this, instead hoping that things would get better. The character's story arc (which is a ridiculous concept to begin with) should be a collaborative effort between both DM and player. But the problem here is that we don't have an unbiased account of what went on in this game besides the OP's griping about not getting "ideal" powers (another ridiculous concept given it is random) and the fact that their character became pregnant to which they failed to object to. As to what a player gets, whether it is an NPC, magical item, or ability, the DM is under no obligation to make any of it useful or optimized to a character build (also known as power gaming). It is up to the player to decide what they are going to use and which NPC relationships they will develop. Being bitter about what random homebrew powers they get when such is decided entirely by chance is just sour grapes. Relying on the DM for handouts is just a sad way to game...

@@craigtucker1290 That's true. A more fun story would be the bard dropping out of the game and instead revolting against the DM entirely and making the story more told by the players rather than the DM's weird fetish and story he had in mind. DM's fault entirely. Without Ayers, he can't tell the story. The players without a DM has no plot and has to make their own. I do feel the player should have been more vocal, but I also understand how being new to something you're not sure if it's okay to speak up as you might believe it's the DM's story to them. Still, that's 6 years of things not getting better. I'd be bitter too. A game should be fun and the DM failed ultimately. He didn't include every player or even try to reach out, it sounds. The major issue is choice. They had no choice to make, it was forced. See the issue I find? It became the DM's story of what the player character should be. They should have said something, but fear does that to someone. Social anxiety is real and being new makes you probably think your issues are unfounded. After all, it's not a big deal, it's a game. I feel at least some communication should have been discussed with the player rather than changing or forcing the players. DnD is about choices and story, right. What's a game all about choices and story without choices and just a linear story without multiple ways to finish the game? Although, a story where the players revolt against the DM or 'God' of the story sounds kind of fun admittedly.

@@Daltonisntabot No, not entirely the DM's fault, something you just can't grasp. When the DM asked if the player liked what they had done, that was the opportunity to change directions. Instead, the player lied, which is their fault for things not getting any better. That is entirely on the player. The DM can't "fix it" if they don't know what is broken. That 6 years of allowing a game to continue one is not happy in is the players fault, not alone, but mostly. The player could have found another group or game, yet they chose not to. The player could have given an ultimatum, yet they chose not to. The big nothing end was inevitable once the player had quit, like what else would they expect since they dropped out? What we don't know is how the game really was. The other players seemed happy, so the DM was doing something right, just not what this player liked. And no, this is not how the game works, not a good one anyways. The DM only presents a scenario, a hook, or an event in a campaign setting, not a scripted plot. A plot is a railroad, that has a beginning and an end where the player's actions turn out to be inconsequential in where the story goes. Muck like character's that have story arcs. The player can have goals or things they want their character to accomplish, but that is all they have. Their character could die in the first encounter, accomplish their goals, or find their goals have changed. Any of these are the character's actual story arc that can only be told once play is done, not beforehand. A story arc is not plot armour against death or other negative consequences. Anything else is nothing more than fanfic with the illusion of choice. As for the distribution of random abilities and NPCs also having them (which they should), this is about the OP's pettiness and dissatisfaction with the powers they *randomly* received. Such occurrences are likely when one plays in a homebrew with such house rules, something the player knew and yet still to play in that game. The player might have assumed NPCs shouldn't have received such powers, but again, this is on the player for a ridiculous assumption. Most of this sounds like sour grapes over what powers and abilities were meted out under a set of homebrew rules from an OP that is bitter and entirely biased. As to "I feel at least some communication should have been discussed with the player rather than changing or forcing the players," that depends. Some choice are entirely the players, like player autonomy, some are the DMs, game world reality, and others are collaborative. Deciding when a character gets pregnant is sticky topic as such a choice is not entirely up to the player unless the character is celibate (though there were some rare exceptions). A player that decides their character is going to have those kinds of relations is risking pregnancy (sounds like a roll of some kind), that is if the game has any verisimilitude, unless their character is sterile (which was part of the game). Such topics need to be discussed beforehand as a group with what the group is comfortable with, such as violence, PvP, and other mature topics and how such will be handled. If the DM states that a character can become pregnant or sire offspring, such needs to be stated, and the player needs to accept what is in their control and what is not. The DM just deciding their character was pregnant without first consulting the player was the *wrong* thing to do, especially if the character was going to be played again. Not so much once a character becomes a NPC, but the DM should still consult with the player as a courtesy if nothing else. Both were at fault, but for different reasons.

@@craigtucker1290If you say, that characters should run a risk of getting pregnant, do you also roll everytime after characters get wounded to see if they're infected with tetanus? Or if they don't specify that they eat fruit for some time, do you roll for scurvy? In my opininion, this kind of selective realism isn't very rewarding for the game or the dm-player-relations. Especially, and this is really where it comes down: If the DM wants to introduce an item of selective realism, they ought to ask the players beforehand. Period. I would consider myself a very shitty dm, if I didn't announce changes to the core rules to my players (like for example getting infected with tetanus/ scurvy, developping mental illnesses, getting pregnant or giving out inspiration)
