I can agree and relate 100% I never knew my dad until I was 19. I built him up to be like D.L Said a “mythical,” creature. When I met him he was sickly and mentally ill. Everything he has been through in life you could it all over him. And it broke my heart completely. He never understood why I didn’t come around to see him a lot, and I didn’t have the heart to tell him. R.I.P daddy, I miss you.

My mom keeps pics of my dad in the final years. I don’t. I keep pics of him as I knew him and on one hand I’d want my boys to remember me before the end like DL says. But on the other hand seeing my strong father come to his end taught me that I will have to go this way eventually and to embrace and appreciate the days you have. Not sure I’d want to deny my sons that final lesson.

Right. His young mom left his dad while she was pregnant cause she wanted to be with someone else. Then the someone else assumed the role of his father because he wanted her too. Robbed this man of actually knowing who his biological father is. His biological father probably didn't even know she was pregnant and when he found out she said "nah it's not your baby, its my new boyfriends". Momma was young. Made a bad decision. WE SEE THIS ON THE MAURY SHOW ALL THE TIME!!!

@@rickimhotep1236 We as men must stop making excuses for bad behavior and bad decisions from our women whether it is a girlfriend, wife, sister or mother it is because of their lack of making sound judgements is the reasons why there is so much dysfunction in our communities. Just for the reason you stated, she may have not known who the real father was, that statement alone should be an indicator of a bad choice she made because women should never be having sex with 2 different men at the same time and not be using some form of birth control, when you made that account she may not have known who the real father was because she may have wanted his step father to be his dad well, that wasn't her call to make, she should've gotten a DNA test done as soon as DL got to a certain age, you see this is a testament of how you have normalized bad decision made by some of our women, that we have been over looking for years, also at some point during DL's formidable years his mom should've sat DL down and explained to him whom his real father was, remember DL said that his family betrayed him upon meeting his biological father because they were happy to see another man that looked just like him so, if his family saw the resemblance you don't think DL's mother saw the same thing many years before his family made the same account, again bad judgment by his mother never allowing DL to have a real relationship with his biological father because she wanted his step father to be his dad, what a selfish mother to keep them apart for all those many years when he could have very well had a very good relationship with his biological father before he passed away if it were not for the bad choice that his mother made also, remember DL said his mom had been keeping up with his biological father's whereabouts for years but she was selling DL on him being a deadbeat dad. So in essence DL's mother ruined the relationships between DL and his biological father and DL's family because I'm sure DL's biological father would've loved having a relationship with his grandchildren and them with their grandfather.

I lost my mom to cancer January 21st. She was my rock my entire life. I know exactly what he means when he says you have this idea of you parent and then to see them sick, weak etc...really fucks you up. I took care of her every day for 4 1/2 years, but the end felt like it came so fast and she was just so frail all of a sudden. It's an extremely difficult thing to witness. I hope he doesn't hold on to that part too much anymore.

God Bless you, I lost my Dad January 26th. Cancer. When they are on the way out, it is their Final Lesson for Us. I feel like DL’s Mother robbed him of just *making sure the Dad got to see DL from young* what I got out of this interview is that by the time DL was older his heart was closed off.

I know exactly how DL feels. The man that raised me was not the man that made me, I knew that and it didn’t matter. When the one that made me passed, his family wanted to include me but he was a stranger to me and I declined. My son's little brother isn't mine, his dad split soon as his mom got pregnant, and I've been in his life since he was 2 cuz when I went to pick up my son he would be there. I spent lots of time with them during Covid cuz his mom wasn't trying to let my boy go across town and get sick. Even though I'm the only dad he knows I still find it hard to tell him I love him. It’s not just in the black community. Don’t buy into the narrative. I used to believe that crap until I moved into a mostly white neighborhood and learned whytes also have absentee fathers….you just never hear about it. The system is working as intended. But not only absent but they frequently engage in incest. One of the whyte families that I know totally practices sick shit. The dad married his son’s ex-wife and had a kid with her even though his son had a kid with her as well. So the notion that ONLY black dads are not present is to perpetuate the negative stigma and demonize black families. I don’t condone single-parent homes but just wanted to clarify that it isn’t in black communities only like we were sold on.

If men have to do that to other men than women need to hold mothers who keep fathers away or make it difficult for the father n child to have a relationship accountable cuz it damages the child. I learned the true story about my bio dad at the age of 55. It is super important to tell kids the truth. My heart goes out to you DL!

I need to rewatch the I believe...Thanksgiving 2-Parter of The Hughleys because in that series DL's character in the show's REAL FATHER was portrayed by Billy Dee Williams lol and I remember that being an emotional episode...wow, talk about inserting your real life into your craft. This is some deep stuff, but it does happen more often than you think :/

I can understand why Hughley listened to his wife and kids, but sometimes you need another man's perspective. Most men don't want you to see them in a moment of weakness and/or dying. No matter how many other memories you have, the last one is always one of the strongest. That's a hard conversation, but its' one they should have had before it came to that point. Pay attention to what some of the stuff TK is trying to put out there about insurance and stuff. Paying for funerals, how you want to be buried are all conversations you need to have with your folks before they die. Your significant other or whomever has that spot in your life as well. I've seen people fight over stuff after the person is gone. Even with a will involved. Still do the will, but if you have heirlooms and things like that. Give it to the person now if you can. On a different note, I have to give a shout out to Corey Holcomb. People get made but this is the kind of stuff he talks about and it's based on real life. I don't know Hughley's mother and I'm not judging her, but her actions speak volumes. She picked a better prospect to help her raise her child, but maintained a relationship with the real daddy? Not saying it was sexual, but what else did he get out of it? What did she get out of it? You can't ignore that statement. Even his wife did? When a man kicks another man out of his house, that's it. This isn't a TV show. Damn!

Man Felt this story because this happened to me. I found out one day during one of my Mothers Drunken days that neither my mom and Dad were my real parents and that I was adopted. This happened when I was 7 or 8 and being told so abruptly was kind of sad and shocking. When I asked my Dad if I was adopted I think his feeling were a little hurt because his answer was “Well you like it here don’t you?” Don’t get it twisted tho my dad is and was a saint and he adopted all the kids in every activity I did.

He's hurt. The women in his life have their own secrets and hidden agendas. All while he's financially supporting BOTH of them. As an adult, he realizes that his mother was unfaithful to his father before, during, and after her marriage. She lied to him his entire life. He tried so hard not to call them both the b-word. BOTH of them deserve it.

Crazy how a lot of us got the same story it don’t do nothing but mess up the child especially if you hide it from them when ever I have kids ima make sure they never go through what I been thru 💯

Same thing was on his sitcom The Hughleys. He was raised by his mom and step-dad. Then met his father later in the show.

I told my son that his real father is not his father too. Met him when I was 6 months pregnant and still with him to this day.

He wasn't even mad, he told me he knew but didn't care because his father loves him & thanked me for providing a loving man, husband & father. I had the same exact situation as DL And I too wish no one would have never told me… I would have been just fine with not knowing at all! It brought to much bs when I found out My maternal grama and aunty dropped the info on me as a preteen. It f@cked me up. And my parents were pissed! Then at 18 My maternal grama & maternal aunty pushed and pushed that I “owed the bio dude” that much And now I can definitely tell you I didn’t owe that man jack shit! My daddy (the man who raised me from birth) has been and always will be my daddy! Im 50 yrs old and blessed to still have him. Glad your right… it takes a special REAL man to raise another man’s child as his own.

I have exact same story as DL. Exact same. Never listen to a spouse or ur mom or family when it comes to who ur dad is. Genealogists say something like 60 percent of family stories are incorrect. It's cause people always want to save face and preserve the family image. And spouses, etc think they have best interests in mind they don't. If u deal with DNA, do it alone. Don't share with nobody.

The idea of your father will sustain you more than the reality of him....I think most fathers can relate to this..my daughter loves me! She thinks the world of me. She thinks I'm just a big tank of a man, that can never be hurt or defeated. Just a solid rock. But truth is..if she knew who I really was on the inside, or who I am when she's not around I'm sure she wouldn't feel the same. Just some self reflection of myself.

This segment was deep on several different levels.

The pain of not being raised by a parent is something else. No matter how old you are, that shit continues to hurt but we survive

That's a tough situation, communication breakdowns and secrets prevent people from living their best life.

I learned who my bio dad was later in life and it didnt bother me. Shit happens. My dad is till this dad an alcoholic. My mom made the choice that my step dad that came into my life when i was a baby would be my dad and no one told me until i was way older. My step dad is my dad. He has always been there for me.

Shoutout to all the parents that raised their kids right, gave them a great life, and happily stay together. You guys are a rare breed of great people

My mother did the same to me only it was my Grandfather,, I was young but I was no dummy as I told her, I don't know what you talking about, but the man that loved and cared for me since birth, took me everywhere, taught me important lessons in life, and made sure I was never spanked, was my Grandfather and will always be my only Grandfather, and I am happy she told me so I could Thank my Grandmother from moving on to someone else who stepped in and raised my Mother and Uncle, and provided for his family until the day he died, much respect for my Grandmother for making a better choice for her family, for my siblings and cousins were completely loved by our Grandfather unconditionally

I can honestly say that I have NEVER heard "DL" say anything in his interviews that I disagree with!

As a young person, if you're growing up with split up parents and you ain't old enough to remember the break up, you need to know that parents will cheerfully and blatantly LIE to their child to keep them on side. My mama slandered my father every way possible to keep me from loving him. Then told me after he died,"Oh he didn't beat me and assault me and do drugs like I told you over and over ...he was just always going to be poor". Dig a little. You don't want this pain and regret as an adult.

To each their own but I don't understand why a man would get into a relationship with a woman pregnant by another man. The other guy had all the fun and now you're picking up the pieces.

I always tell ppl to forgive their absent parents, I know it’s fucked up to neglect your kids but ppl aren’t perfect & a lot of times we don’t know the whole story but u only get 2 parents in life, it’s only 2 ppl responsible for u being here & it’s best to establish a good of a relationship as possible cause SO many ppl wished they’d of forgave their mother/father before they passed

Some? Alot of women do this ishh. Women do some trifling stuff...my mom named my brother after her college sweet heart who she didn't marry. She openly said this to us like it was normal after our dad passed away. Like that's some nasty stuff if you think about it for a second.

I know exactly what he's talking about. I chose how I wanted to remember my father after he passed but the women around me just couldn't accept it.

@@fashionlife5348 He died suddenly from a heart attack. I never visited the morgue, I never looked at him at the funeral nor at the final call at the grave site. I remember my uncle and friends in that state and it never made me feel any better. The women were hysterical saying, "You'll never see him again" but I chose to remember my father as the pillar he was in life. Never regretted it.

My dad was having a heart attack my sister and step mom called me to come to The house the medics had just arrived I was about 20 min away... Then my car started to overheat I stopped waited for it to cool down then drove again. Only for it to overheat again. I never made it to the house where my dad passed! We were very close and I had just seen him a day or two prior. And I'm thankful that him alive is my last memory especially after my family describing the scene that night and how the medics tried to save him. I truly don't think I was supposed to make it there to see him that way. I believe that was the reason my car broke down. Because after that day it was fine. I completely agree with D.L. in this situation.

My situation is similar. My son's younger brother isn't mine but his left as soon as he got her mom pregnant. We were broken up and never got back together but I've been in the little one's life since he was 2 years old going to pick up my son and due to Covid just spending time with them at their grandma's house. I get along really well with the kid and he knows I'm not his Dad, I've told him that since the beginning, but I still find it hard to Love him. I can't say I love you to him but I want to it's just that something is stopping me.

The same thing happened with his character on The Hugleys . He finds out his father is really his stepfather and he is mad about it then he meets his biological father . That's life iminating art.
