--------
In this clip, D.L. Hughley attempts to add context to the footage of Dave Chapelle's condemnation of a low-income housing project in Yellow Springs, Ohio. D.L. Hughley states that he knows and respects, Dave Chapelle as a person, therefore he'd like to give his comrade the benefit of the doubt until he gathers more information about the entire circumstance. However, the Los Angeles native made it very clear that if Dave Chapelle is indeed against low-income housing, it would be very hypocritical.

Vlad is jumping the gun here. Dave opposed the proposal because the "affordable" housing part of it was a token. They basically wanted to put up gawdy shopping complexes, and threw in affordable housing, which wasn't really all that affordable. Dave was looking out for the character of the entire town, and didn't think the housing was affordable enough. Vlad makes it sound like it was sus and he already has his opinion of Chappelle as being out of touch because he's successful.

This isn’t about being worth $100s of millions of dollars. This is about maintaining the integrity of the community AND making sure they build housing that is truly affordable to those in Yellow Springs. Dave is for TRUE affordable housing and against gentrification. The only people that could afford those homes at the price point they were being offered were people who don’t live there.

The houses would have been priced at somewhere over one hundred thousand, a third of the average price for a home in Dave's community. Come on really? At what point do we look at the character of the man and give him the benefit of all doubt in a situation. Dave has stood for so much in regards to his people if we stop for one second and do any amount of research we will see once again Dave is for the people as always. Anytime you hear affordable housing know that it’s affordable for the builders but cheaply made for the residents and more often than not it’s made affordable to get the original plans approved as well as a tax break. Out of the 37 acres of land to be built on only 1.7 was attributed for affordable housing which there was no plan for nor were the builders of the original develop locked in to also handle the building of the affordable housing portion. It was something they implemented after being rejected the first go round. Vlad is dangerous on so many fronts and we really need to hold this dude accountable!

No big chain stores an everything that comes with living in a big city. Thats why he lives there. Also $300k homes are not considered to be affordable homes. The media spent it as if he has so much money he dont want to support black people. Affordable housing refers to projects which is why the clip was presented like it was. The $300K homes weren’t the affordable housing. They were to build affordable housing as well. Also who cares what he doesn’t want? It’s like he thinks because he goes to a small town and has the most money he can bully people around to do things the way he wants to do it. I find it very telling that no one else from that community was against the project. He wasn’t speaking up for poor people. He, like most obscenely wealthy people, just don’t want poor people in their space.

What happens a lot is that state or local laws require a certain % of low income housing in each town, so when these new developments come in they’re required to set aside some townhouses or apartments and rent them lower than market rate, in order for the town to fulfill it’s requirement without going out of its way to build low income housing. The units look identical to the surrounding ones that get sold or rented for full market value so they’re not what people typically think of when they hear the phrase “low income housing”. It’s a legal loophole more than anything. But the fact that a handful of units would be set aside for that purpose is purely incidental and not relevant to Dave’s objection to the project. From his explanation, his biggest issue was that they’re using his name to sell the project- basically telling people they’ll be Dave Chappelle’s neighbors. There is also the point that the project isn’t inline with the character of the neighborhood in terms of design, architectural styles etc.

Dave Chappelle has had ties to Yellow Springs, OH since he was a teen. His dad was a professor at nearby Antioch College so Chapelle spent lots of time in that community as a kid spending summers with his dad. In many interviews Chappelle has referenced Yellow Springs as a second hometown so it's not like he threw a dart and chose to live in the middle of an Ohio cornfield. Yellow Springs is a very socially and politically liberal pocket, so much so that Chappelle choose to raise his family there and has been a resident for decades. And he was not opposed to "low income housing" in any standard context of what those words mean in most other housing scenarios. He was opposed to substantial urban sprawl and the smoke and mirrors of a city council board trying to push through a zoning proposal and site plan that was not representative of its current community residents. If housing @ $200k is low income 1/2 hour outside the greater Dayton, OH area, then the economy is much better than what's being reporting by HUD. What Chappelle objected to is really no different then the housing push back that's been going on for years in Portland, OR etc. against more ala David Byrne's Taking Heads/Rush subdivision sprawl.

I see so many people defending Chappelle in the comments, saying "it's not what it looks like," and making some silly ass arguments, saying "there wasn't ENOUGH affordable housing, Dave was against it because there wouldn't be ENOUGH poor people moving in." So many of you people would be broken hearted if you knew what your favorite celebrities actually thought about poor people, especially black celebrities. You're living in a fantasy world if you think any of these people you worship on the internet give a shit about you. We're all cockroaches to them.

Dave Chappelle didn’t kill affordable housing. Concerned residents and a responding Village Council ‘killed’ a half-baked plan which never actually offered affordable housing,” said Carla Sims, a spokesperson for Chappelle. Chappelle was among several residents who spoke against the project at a council meeting Monday the Dayton Daily News reported.

The one thing some people can't understand is social class which can also tie into economic class. Dave is socially middle class but has high income. Dave clearly wants to preserve his town's social status. Bringing in low income housing to an enriched neighbourhood would cause a degrade in property value, which would also lower Mr. Chappelles economic income (not anything that would grossly impact him to a lower class or status.) I guess some people see no differences in class or structure or rather they believe that they can mix environments and see no draw back or negative ramifications. People really need to study basic economics in my opinion.

@@Coryameta every city has a status quo, your city, my city everyone has a type of structure and standard in play. My city for instance has made growth over the course of 30 years and has improved in its job opportunities and housing development. The value of my city has grown and it also reflects in the quality of serves gained from increased taxes as well. Education, emergency service and public works all increase with a higher average income. My community was once lower medium income but over the course of a few decades it has grown to medium income. If my city decided to bring in affordable housing (which isn't that bad in my opinion) it could attract a different class of individuals who's standards and contributions are below average. Depending on where people come from with it can always have a negative or positive outcome, it all depends on what they can contribute based on their practiced standards and income. Lower class standards can blend a bit with the middle class but it's a tidier tot between the population and its influences.

@@Marvelous0071 I'm not trying to be an a**hole here but this rhetoric is the same thing that racist used back in the day to justify and expand redlining policy. A ton of deprecated communities were made that way because because of these policies. The lack of investment in many of those communities kept them this way and now the lift needed feels unimaginable. I'm not sure if you are black or not but wanting to keep one's communities from accepting ""undesirable"" people so one can maintain a particular status will alway be used to keep us out, regardless of our socioeconomic status. If you want to lower crime, call for an investment into infrastructure and job opportunities. Advocate for minimum wage increase so regular workers have the income to participate in your community and be able to live there without worry. I understand that a substantial amount of black people reside in lower class environments but they are not the majority within the community or populous at large. From your statements is it safe to assume that you find Daves decisions problematic due to how you feel it would affect people of color? And if so why? Why do you see black people as lower class? Why does race have impact on how class is structured? Let's say the a populous was predominantly people of color, would this policy be seen as problematic? The problem with affordable housing is that the property managers who run know that the neighbors you move in don't tell the truth about what is going on especially someone is selling drugs or doing something illegal like moving people in that are not on the lease. We can't forget the bad as kids who the single moms are not watching. So I think Dave is wrong about section 8 or affordable housing it's not the places it's the people. So until you put the right people in who are smart and don't having any problems then you can create an environment that is livable.
