DJI Mic vs Rode Wireless Go II vs Hollyland Lark M1 - What sounds the best?
In this video, we compare the DJI Mic to the Rode Wireless Go II and the new Hollyland Lark M1 microphones. I did not adjust the audio in post - so you can hear the exact way each mic sounds.
DJI Mic $329 - amzn.to/3OX5SXk
Rode Wireless Go II $265 - amzn.to/3oQyJSn
Hollyland Lark M1 $150 - amzn.to/3bvVd8m
All the systems come with two mics, removable windscreens, and charging cables. The DJI and Hollyland come with a nice case that also charges the mics. Though the wind muffs and cables do not fit into either case (would be great if they did!)
Both the DJI and Rode have easy-to-read screens, so you know the audio levels. The Hollyland does not, though you can adjust the audio level.
Which system sounds best to you? What system makes the most sense for your use? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks for the great review & video! I have an odd sort of use for such a mic; I want to record sleep-talking. I suppose I could clip the mic to my shirt collar (I am a side-sleeper, so I don't think it would present a comfort problem). I could also use the 2 mics (stereo mode) and clip one to each side of my pillow. I'm not sure how strong the clips are - whether they would remain attached all night. I'm using a Galaxy A51 Android 12 phone. I would like to be able to record only when I talk, and there are several apps available for that purpose; however, I also play a nature soundtrack (rushing stream) while I sleep, so I don't know whether I can set the app to ignore the background noise and record only when I talk. I suppose I could try the noise cancelling feature on the mics, but I have my doubts about that working. I might also want to record audio continuously to my Windows 10 PC using Reaper DAW. I would of course need to edit the file in Reaper to avoid having to listen to 6 hours of noise with a few moments of talk. That is very easy to do in the DAW, so I'm not concerned about it. From your review, I believe this system will work. I may only need 1 mic, but I like the package that includes 2 mics and the charging case, plus the USB C adapter for my Android phone. One other thing: Which method would you use to record to Windows PC? The 3.5mm connected to the mic input on my PC, or the USB-C adapter? I assume that if I use the adapter, Windows will recognize the mic and allow me to route audio from it into Reaper (or any other app). I apologize for the long comment, but I have never used any of these mics before. Thanks Ethan Edit: I note in the Hollyland Mark 1 description on Amazon, it states that the 3.5mm to USB-C adapter is not included in the kit; in addition, it states that their adapter will not work for Samsung phones (I have the Galaxy A51), and to purchase the adapter from Samsung. Can you think of a reason another brand adapter would not work? I went to the Samsung store, and found the adapter, but it doesn't get good reviews, so I am hesitant to purchase it.

The Lark M1 having no internal recording and no jack for external microphones put them into a whole different category I think. Also, connectivity is another differentiator: the Rode and the DJI can act like USB microphones, I enjoy using the RODE with my smartphone connected through USB-C: it offers stereo recording capability on a smartphone and this way the audio circuitry of the phone is bypassed, all is high quality digital audio.

Hello! I need to check out your channel. I am a fan of safety razors and good blades. 👌 Great question! I don’t think any of these are going to be water resistant. I think having your mic as close as possible, but not in the path of the water, will be good. A lot of KZreadrs have a mic just out of frame. The zoom could even work. That was a great little mic. Hope some of this helps! Good luck on your channel too 🙌
Looking for audio advice for starting a fishing KZread channel. I have a Sony a6600, a Go Pro 5 black and a Theta Z1 360 camera. I’m kind of stretched budget wise, so I’m looking for an affordable audio solution, if I’m filming myself, and one other person. Any suggestions?
Can you put the deadcat on the cheap mic while it's in the case? That's seemed to be a huge deal for you. I'm surprised you didn't mention it at all.
@Engearment
Жыл бұрын
Nope. It is a snug fit in its case as well. I hope it does not come across like it’s a huge deal. I wind up using the DJI most of the time. I just keep the receiver on the camera and clip one mic with dead cat onto the mic cable until ready to use. Keeping the other mic in the case to charge.
One big advantage for some people will be the onboard recording on the DJI. It won’t matter to some people but as an example you could use it with a GoPro without a media MOD or mic adapter and sync in post. You’ll have the scratch audio from the GoPro or any camera without a mic input to make the sync simple. Thanks for your time! 👍

You can't connect a Lav to the M1. Other than that I think it sounds almost as good as the GO. I have a M1 and a GO, I also think the GO has a better range when a lot of interference is near( like cell phones ). As long as you are within 25 feet or an open field it should not be problem. The low end need a little help in post for me, but I mean very little help. I got mine for $115 on Prime Day and plan to use them to do some interviews. I have sound meters and a headphone jack on the ZV-E10 so the fact that it does not have meters is not a problem. As you could hear it could have a problem with hair noise from beards and long hair so you might want to use the wind hat at all times. I was happy with the buy and even if I do get something better later, I will always carry the M1 as a backup.

Good call! It is a really good mic. The zve10 screen is hard for me to see when using on sunlight. So I like having the meter on the DJI and Rode. Good points, and glad you are liking your set up(s)!! 🙌

Hello! I am not sure if I know which camera you are referring too. If it is an action camera and allows for mic input, then yes. I use it on my GoPro Hero 10 often. Makes for a really lightweight set up!
Which of these 3 recommendations for a movie, to take sound from the acotres?
@Engearment

Any of these would work well. If you are looking for discrete, the Rode and DJI can accept a lav mic. If you want simple, the M1 is small and sounds good.
Great video, brother. I found rode to be more refind sound quality, which is what I am looking for. I do voice acting with toys and characters, keep moving around, and indoors and outdoors. Sound quality has to be the best. What is your honest suggestion, please.

I’ve been using the DJI mic for about 8 months and I have to say it’s been my favorite, to me I could definitely hear the difference between the DJI and hollyland models but the rode and the DJI mic I could barrels tell the difference. With the DJI mic I love the internal recording and the ability to add lavs to the pack. And having the phone attachment in the case that quickly attached to the receiver was a big selling point for me. Loved the comparison video!!

Rode mic is too big, but saw the DJI and then the Hollyland and really like the sleeker look. Hollyland did sound a little tinny, but I can't pay over $300 for the DJIs.

Yep. Hollyland is very sleek. Sound is not as good in some cases as the DJI or Rode though. Good enough for most uses.

which sound quality do you prefer, DJI or Rode?
I just bought the dji but not the whole big system. I got the one that comes with one transmitter and one receiver. It doesn’t come with the charging case so it ended up being $200. I figure I can get by with one transmitter for most of what I want to do, which is recording myself. If I ever get into the realm of doing interviews with more than one person, then I’d probably just buy the two transmitter system and have 3 with a backup receiver. I’m actually really excited to hook up my rode shotgun mics to the transmitter and using it as a wireless boom mic. These wireless systems make that possibility alone worth it imo.

@@Engearment I broke down and bought the whole system lol. I returned the one tx one rx version. Just don’t want to risk running out of battery. It’s so nice though! I love the charging case.
Thank you, it is a very interesting video. I have the Rode Wireless Go II now. Actually I wanted to get the Rode when it was released but could not buy it then. Then DJI came out with their mic and I pre-ordered it immediately. But it did not come to Europe until August 2022 which is close to a year after release... In the meanwhile our currency got devalued quite a bit meaning these mics went up on price gradually. So there was a point where I just did not want to wait longer for the DJI Mic. So I have been using the Rode now for a few months and so far I am happy. There are a number of great features therein and I have invented a few small hacks that make it even better. I am thinking of shooting a short video about those hacks :) For example I no longer have the mic falling forward on your shirt issue you talk about :)
@Engearment

That is frustrating. I feel you on that. I was on the waitlist for months for the DJI, heck they even reached out to work together first! Must have been a supply issue. Thank you for sharing your side of the pond situation. Provides good context for the viewers and readers. Cheers!

Rode hands down sounds cleaner than all of them, unless you have the gain turned up on the DJI and the Holly. DJI and Holly sound gained up.

Agreed. It is hard to know what level the Hollyland is set at, as there is no meter or level on it. Regardless, it provides a very full sound. Thanks for the nice note.
I think u should also try Boya xm6 s2 . However here my my thoughts In wireless microphone u have 2 categories. Either u are on a budget or u need a smaller microphone. Rest ie best sound , internal recording system , battery and larve attachment etc are 2ndry option group. So lets consider u are very low on budget and requires a light microphone HollyLand is the winner starting at 150$ Boya XM6 S2 on 2nd 170-199$ Rode and DJI are not recommended. However if u can cope with size but need good quality but are still on a budget. Going for a Rode wireless 1 for 120-165$ is a great option. Followed By Boya XM6 .
