DJI Mavic 3 - 2 Month Review

I’ve been using the Mavic 3 Cine for a couple of months for trips to Norway; Iceland and Tuscany, and putting it through it’s paces. Here are my thoughts on DJI's replacement for the Mavic 2 Pro, a drone which I used and was super happy with for around 3 years. Thanks to DJI who sent me the Mavic 3 for this review.

    Excellent review Andy. I've been enjoying my Mavic 3 for the past few months. The recent firmware updates have finally made the drone feel more complete. The telephoto has become more fun to use and DJI certainly deserves credit on that front. I'm still holding out for a d-log update for the telephoto to *really* consider using it. Here's hoping DJI keeps improving the Mavic 3 and add further new cool features.

    Thanks for the comment Allan. The firmware update did make a big difference...I really thought that before the update it was more of a gimmick than something that could be used seriously. Now, for photos at least, it's much better, but it still needs F Log to make the video worthwhile

    @@AndyMumford i totally understand that, the reason I was still suggesting a drone edit video is purely and simply for the different perspectives when capturing images, I think seeing someones actual whole process, would benefit me a lot and others as well, I am actually thinking the whole lot, from screen recording while going through the settings and composition, weather its AEB or single shot, then once you have done the shots then going into lightroom and being able to see you actually edit the photo from start to finish, I am not a newbie user by any means, but having said that I dont always get the most from my camera sensor, and then in lightroom i often find i can never seem to get the look im after, i do live in the english countryside, and there is a LOT of haze so that doesnt help, but still some valuable tutorials would be exceptional in my opinion

    Thanks for the video. I would highly recommend the Air 2S. It has a one inch sensor which has excellent quality, really good wind resistance and obstacle avoidance sensors, and it's pretty lightweight and small. It's also only a tiny bit more expensive than the Mini 3.

    Thank you very much, Andy, for such a detailed review! After watching your previous review, I finally decided to buy DJI Air 2S, but I'm really missing the variable aperture. I prefer to be able to record videos and take photos on the same flight. With a fixed aperture on my Air 2S, I either get blurry shots because I tend to fly near the ocean and capture waves in my shot or jerky videos because my shutter speed is not following the 180 rule, because I have to put or remove different ND filter every time I fly. I was a bit skeptical about Mavic 3, given bad reputation it got after the launch (like missing features), but after watching your video, I think I'm going to pull the trigger and return my Air 2S and get Mavic 3 instead :)

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment Max, glad you found the review useful. The Mavic 3 certainly is a really good drone, but as I said in the video, you'll still need to use an ND filter with it. The variable aperture makes it easier to adjust inflight, so for example if you're flying towards the light and want a certain shutter speed, and then turn to face in another direction where the light levels are different, but you'll still need an ND filter on most flights and change it quite a bit.

    Great review Andy. Would have loved a bit more detail, insight and comparisons of the ProRes files compared to the h.264 given there’s such a price hike between those two models. Of the shots you’ve demo’d here, we’re these all h.264 as you suggested we should use or were those shot on and graded in ProRes?

    Thanks for the comment, glad you found the review useful. To be honest, I was unable to find a real difference between ProRes and h.264/5, but that’s most likely because I don’t have have the knowledge of grading to get the most out of the files. For someone like me, there’s little point to ProRes, but for people shooting commercial footage with the grading skills to absolutely get the best out of the footage, it probably matters

    Hi Andy. As usual thoroughly enjoyed your drone reviews (Air2S & MP3) Calm, no nonsense, no super exaggerated hyperbole. Just practical thoughts, observations and experiences. Being an ex pro photojournalist for over 50 years and looking for something new and different to get my well worn down teeth into, I’m increasingly looking at drone photography in my dotage for a bit of fun and new perspective, mainly stills. My question, what do you find best suits you for viewing your scene before finally pressing the ‘shutter? Can you recommend a suitable viewing experience, ie controller? Might it be worth making a video of such? For me a must is that the image I’m viewing must match the emotion and warmth of heart I’m seeing and feeling. Cheers from Oz. 👍

    I agree with @AllanSu, great video. This is, by far, the least gimmicky review I have watched, and finally! Finally, somebody sealed the deal for me on this Mavic 3 purchase! In your defense, I am impressionable as far as camera equipment I need (pronounced desire)/just fun stuff to have. I am sacrificing air conditioning in Missouri in my Expedition to save for the drone (91° presently). My introduction to drones is the mini se, received it a couple of weeks back. I got it to learn how to fly a drone, knowing I would upgrade to a more feature-filled drone. I noted right away I must have better video quality. I compare the video from the se to my Canon R5. You might be aware there is no comparison there but I believe either the Air 2 S or Mavic 3 has all I would want but, you know... Hasselblad. Additionally, after flying the se straight into a tree (forgot to elevate the first leg), I think it might be a good idea to purchase a drone with sensors that detect objects out to slap the drone about-a-bit, then send it hurtling toward the ground, resulting in miscellaneous arms, legs, and head of the drone strewn about, connected by what can only be referred to as drone guts. I digress. Thank you again for what is, in my opinion, the gold standard for a drone review.

    Hi Andy, great video, with fantastic images, but, at 0:17 when panning, I see your footage ids choppy/juddery, and also in a couple of other places, and also when not even panning, eg 5:30 & 10:25. I have been in communication with DJI for two Months over this, and several other M3 issues! DJI are ignoring this, and other issues,,, Choppy footage - this is an issue I've been suffering with for MONTHS now - I'm even on my 2nd M3 as I returned the first one as not fit for purpose! But the 2nd one is the same! This choppy/juddery footage is NOT SD card/PC related, as it's visible on the screen, even when not recording. Just slowly pan and the judder can be seen, now matter what setting or combination of settings are used, and I've literally tried dozens of combinations, and cannot eliminate the choppy footage. Put the drone into photo mode, then pan, and it's perfect. Once in video mode, the judder returns. It's not KZread either, as some have suggested, as it's happening before posting. It happens on my super fast PC no matter what video viwer is used, VLC being the worst btw. DJI now have examples, and I'm waiting to hear their comments. The time it takes to locate satellites is also a complete joke, on us; up to 5 MINUTES is common it seems, 5mins of battery/flying time, gone! My Air 2S, in the same location, at the same time, locks on almost instantly! DJI are ignoring this mess too. AirSense too, didn't work, at all, on my previous M3, and doesn't on this one either, AT ALL! I had a small, Cessna size aircraft fly directly overhead, about 1000' above me, and,,, nothing! A2S reported this situation even before I could see an aircraft. Another failure DJI is ignoring! This drone was not ready when it was released, and IMO, it's still not ready. All issues experienced with all the latest Firmwares (0900) btw.

    Drone and mobile photos bleee...I wouldnt call it real photography and its not inspiring at all, too much technology going too far... Same goes to videos I dont like when people miss use them and call cinematic...Just my opinion about that topic, but whatever pleases other people and keeps them going out. Regards

    Obviously it's just your opinion, but it's strange to leave it on a review of a drone. Personally, I disagree on multiple levels. A drone records images by capturing light onto a sensor in the same way as any mirrorless camera with an electronic shutter, and so it's hard to argue that's not photography. There's certainly no more technology in the image capture process, and this particular drone uses a Hasselblad made camera with a sensor you'd find in an Olympus camera to capture RAW files. It's also a tool for creative expression, the same as a mobile phone, and there's some incredible exciting, inspiring and creative work produced on both mediums every day. People's definition of "real" photography is always very personal and usually adapted to fit what they like and don't like, so it's purely subjective. You could just as easily say digital photography isn't real photography due to the technology, or that film SLR photography with inbuilt meters and focus aids make the process too automated, or that certain films add too much grain or saturate colours too much etc etc etc. It's to miss the point entirely. Photography, and cinema (or making moving pictures) is purely creative expression using whichever tool allows you best to achieve that vision.
