DJI Mavic 3 Classic - A Landscape Photographer's Review

I’ve been using the Mavic 3 Classic for a couple of months for trips to Norway, Greenland and Iceland and putting it through it’s paces. Here are my thoughts after long term usage creating images and cinematic video. Thanks to DJI who sent me the Mavic 3 for this review.

    I really do love the classic! It was very much worth the price. It’s my first drone. The battery is amazing and when paired with my goal zero Sherpa 100 ac I really don’t need a second battery. By the time I get to my destination my battery is usually topped up again. As even 40minutes of flight time gives me amazing footage. Though as a first time operator I didn’t realize yes I have a lot of time, but you should really plan what you are going to do before doing it. Getting good videos definitely takes practice too. Though so far love pushing it to its limits! Thanks for the review really enjoyed it!

    This is a wonderully thoughtful and helpful review. I have got 102 hours of flight time with the Mavic 2 Pro and 9 with the Mavic 3 Classic. I fully agree with your observations about the Classic. 90% of my flights have been over water and i now find it safer for the drone than flying over land. I am carefull when flying below 4 and I do have insurance with State Farm as opposed to DJI Care.

    Very informative and inspiring video. Just used a drone a few times so far and your footage really show what can be done. As for DJI and 20MP I'd guess they didn't have much choice. As far as I know the options are either a 20MP Sony sensor or the 25MP Panasonic use with less DR and maybe higher power drain.

    I'm torn - getting close to either a M3C or the M3Pro, and while I don't expect I'd use the 7x zoom much, I do think there might be some use for the 3x (70mm equiv) zoom. Still, given the quality of the main 24mm equiv camera, that may very well be all I want and need. Thanks for the great review.

    Fantastic video, Andy. Great to hear a review of the Classic from your perspective. I'm primarily interested in using it for landscape photography rather than videography. I understand why people use neutral density filters when shooting videos with a drone. I'm curious if you have used polarising filters for landscape photography with your drone? I'm not sure how that would work with a drone since when using one on a camera lens you have to adjust the filter depending on the angle between the sun and the lens. Obviously you can't do that with a drone in flight, so I'm not clear about the advantages of using a polariser on a drone. Cheers!

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the review. I wouldn't use a polariser on a drone because it's a wide angle lens, and so you'll often get unevenly polarised sky

    Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed the video. The drone only starts to land on water if you're hovering very close (within a meter or so) of it, and even then not all the time. It's something that's only every happened to me once, and then it was easily averted (just push the stick up to rise and it cancels the auto landing). As long as you're not hovering really close to water you'll never have a problem

    Thanks so much. The Mavic 3 Classic should land on your hand without having to turn off the sensors...I land mine on my hand all the time. When you go to land it, you descend towards your hand...usually it will stop when the drone sees your hand, but if you keep pulling the lever to descend it will land on your hand. Sometimes if you have to take your hand away until it starts to go down and then put your hand up again, but I've never not been able to land it in my hand

    Thanks Andy, great video, its taken me hours to find someone that knows what they talking about along with a comparsion with the Air2S, I have been very happy with the Air2s and its taken me nearly a year to decide to go over to the Classic with many debates over that time on if its viable when doing landscape, mainly photography. I think you have finaly tipped the scales and I hope to see the difference between the two as its a pretty big investment. I do have two questions that popped into my head while watching - were you flying back to remove the ND for taking stills after being out there for the ice bergs and video? and did you find you were using the adjustable aperture while shooting stills?

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    Thanks for the comment, glad the video was useful. To be honest, I still use both drones, the Air 2S and the M3 Classic. If I want to go light (i'm just heading to the mountains today where I'll be doing a lot of hiking) then I take the Air 2S, if it's a place where I know I'll be flying a lot and battery life matters, then the M3C. You don't need the adjustable aperture for skills as depth of field is never an issue this wide when you're always at least a few meters from your subject, and I didn't fly back to adjust of remove the the ND filter. I shot video, and then switched to photos, then back to video etc while the ND filter was still on. We were 2km away, which takes a chunk of battery to keep flying there and back, as well as missing the best light

    Hi Andy. Got a stupid question. Im getting into lanscape photography as a hobby for now. Im concern about the 20mp of these drones as opposed to the so called 48mp off the Air 3. So. When printing a photo, what would be the best route?. TIA!.

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    10 ай бұрын

    Well, the 48mp on the Air 3 isn't true 48mp, it's actually a 12mp quad bayer sensor, like the one's you'll find in a lot of mobile phones. The actual resolution gain for printing isn't really significant, and certainly not as good as a true 20mp sensor. You can find an explanation of it here m.gsmarena.com/quad_bayer_sensors_explained-news-37459.php For printing, the best way to work out native print size is to look at the number of pixels on the longest edge. For print you need 100 pixels per centimetre (about 250dpi), and the Mavic 3 is 5272 pixels on the longest edge, so if you divide that by 100 you get 52, and that's the number of centimetres you can print natively along the longest edge. 50cm is a decent size print, and with Lightroom Enhance or Topaz Gigapixel you can double that and it will still look better than the 12mp of the Air 3
