In this video, I take my brand new DJI Avata for it's maiden flight and manage to crash into a tree!
I also give you my initial impressions of the Avata and some things to consider if you're thinking about buying one.
I can't wait to test this drone further and see what content I can create with it.
All of the drone footage was shot in 4k 60fps in super wide FOV with rocksteady enabled. No grading or LUTs were applied to either the goggles footage or the drone footage, it was straight out of camera.
Thanks for watching!

One thing I forgot to add in this video that I really dislike about the Avata is the placement of the SD card/USB-C slot. It's in a really annoying position that forces you to battle with the props and your sanity in order to get the SD card out or a USB-C cable in...

Yes, I agree about this, If you are going to put the SD card where they have, at least give it wifi like the Mini Pro 3.

Just had my own 1st flight a few hours ago, and i think its most fun I have had with a drone. Lost connection to goggles a few times and am a little disappointed with range. I think i maxxed at 250m before losing video feed (CE mode). 1 thing i didnt like about the flight controller, is landing, especially when the ground around your LZ is grass that is a little long. I found it hard to get it to land where I wanted, and ended up just getting hold of top of the drone and turning it upside down to stop motors. The noise is high pitched, but I didnt mind it as I was having so much fun. Like you, i picked a field in middle of nowhere.

Nice one mate, yeah definitely agree about the landing with the motion controller it's a tad awkward unless you've got nice clear LZ. A few people are mentioning the range issues, hopefully this is something that can be ironed out or some range extenders developed, it's meant to do 2k in the UK and 10k in the States, so 250m is obviously not great! Glad you're enjoying it though, happy flying 🤘🏼

Nice maiden Craig. Flying looks pretty intuitive with the DJI 'Wand'. It's a tempting machine for both novices and existing FPV pilots with DIY rigs (like myself) looking for a Cinewhoop-style experience. Sadly the elephant in the room is the poor Avata signal penetration for UK/EU pilots (as reported by other UK reviewers) due to the low power CE spec and the single band transmission design (5.8GHz only). Flying through buildings (like the DJI promo) or exploring birds nests in the woods just ain't gonna happen if you live in the UK/EU unless the FCC hack is something owners would consider (against CAA regulations). The stability issues in light wind may also put off existing FPVers as most DIY rigs have a high power-to-weight ratio and tend not to experience drift. Otherwise it's a more accessible proposition than the original DJI FPV drone, aside from the price. FYI - it's pretty common for FPV pilots to fly in windy conditions and also well beyond 100m, as battery life is normally the fundamental limit on range. I often venture up to 1.5Km each way on a 5 minute battery. All the best with manual mode :)

Nice! Looks fun, and a great roundup, thanks. I’m tempted, I got pretty handy in Acro in 2014/15 but then haven’t touched it since, would love to give it another go with nicer kit. Batteries…. I was getting 4-5 minutes back then 🤣 Here’s another con for it, and the big one for me…. Regulations. I can’t justify getting it put on a CAA permit, I’ll leave the pro FPV work to the young lads currently killing it, and hire them in if I need to. So, that leaves me with using it mostly recreationally without a specific permission, and I think that means it’ll soon be 150m from anything for that aircraft, plus you need a spotter every flight. Looks bloody fun though!

Regarding cost, I have had this argument with FPV streamers who say its a lot of money, but when you look at cost of regular FPV drone hardware at a similar spec, ie digital goggles, enough batteries to last 30min, Go Pro, Half decent controller, 4s cinewoop drone, you are talking about $1500+
