I cant even measure how this song touch my soul and my heart, my tears drop every goddamn time i listen to it. Look, im brazilian and i never ever travelled even out of the state which i was born due lack of money, but i still feel i'm a citizen of the world and i still travelling inside my goddamn room to different cultures through music, language, movies and research. Hope someday my dreams come true but until it, i'll still educating myself. Peace 4 y'll

SA enjoyed this track more than any other country out there
I grew up a block away from DJ Honda's studio in the 90s. First time I heard of Mos Def was from his street team promoting Black on Both Sides. Little did I know it was by the Rawkus Records office, where I eventually got to interview Talib Kweli for my college paper when he dropped Quality. Mad Skillz came thru while I was waiting in reception. Also saw Mos perform back to back nights at the Bowery Ballroom solo and with his band Blackjack Johnson. Q-Tip, Common and Pharoahe Monch were special guests. Some of my greatest memories. Sorry for all the name dropping.

Yes brother, yes
I just want to say this; this song was made at a moment in time, pre 9/11, when it appeared that globalisation was a positive thing and the world was coming together. Hip Hop CULTURE was travelling to Berlin and Marseille, Tokyo and Stockholm, Jakarta and Marrakech...right on the cusp of being commodified beyond recognition. People connecting across borders was natural, and the new millennium promised a new dawn of intercultural peace and optimism... The song is haunting now, but still brings back happy, if a little naive...m e m o r i e s

@davidmitchell3997

John Pitts I wouldn't say this song is "haunting" instead it's timeless; better than the mumble pseudo rap bs that comes out nowadays. As for everything that happened after the 2000's (which despite 9/11 were still better times than the 2010's and so forth) was the result of the drastic major events that occurred mostly during the 1980's and 1990's (i.e. war on drugs, war on terror, violent radicalism, severe classim rise of LBGTQ, third wave feminism, etc.) and let's not forget all these "outbreaks" that had occurred since 2001 like SARS, West Nile, Swine Flu, Ebola, Zika and now Corona. So yeah once 9/11 happened, it slowly turned today's society into a nightmare for most and a complete joke towards the current generations (late millenials and Gen Z).
@elusivejahnell

@@davidmitchell3997 I wouldn't say it's 'timeless' at all. I think it sounds anachronistic in today's landscape. Classic, yes, but not timeless. It very much sounds like late 90s Hip-Hop. It's haunting because it represents a culture that, in my opinion, no longer exists. And even though I agree the 00s seemed better than the 10s, you can still look at 9/11 as the fracture that was unrepairable and connected to the failure of centrism. I absolutely agree that we're witnessing the ramifications of mistakes made in the 80s and 90s, and the arrogance of Fukuyama 'end of history' thinking. I'm nostalgic about the optimism in those decades, but certainly not romantic about what their legacy is. I also want to return to this word 'haunting' - I think this song, video and the era it represents is haunting because it embodies the notion of a future that never came to be.

I feel this has to go down as one of the dopest rap songs. Mos Def was on point with the rhymes especially the first verse. Honda was on point with the beat!
Im sitting in my office humming. Started humming this song for some reason. Havent heard this song for maybe 25 years. Still the greatest. We were so fortunate and lucky to be young during this time. I know its a broken record but the 1990s were the absolute peak of our civilization. Everything was new. The future was right around the corner. 1999 and beyond. If we only knew what we were in for we may have had the chance to find a different future. They may take away our youth, our freedoms, tax us to death, etc, etc. But they cant take away our memories. If you were there you knew how cool it was to be there. Peace yall. Never stop dancing. See you at the old folks home soon.
Still sounds new everytime you listen to it, even after being released almost 30yrs back then
M-Def knows how to put words together, he's not just doing unbeatable rhymes, he also tells us deep stories, with a logic and a soul Cheers from France, real Hip Hop will always exist, but not on TV and other fucked up medias

Great song, so smooth... Mos Def is one of the few artists who can really turn your life in the right direction with their music and that's exactly what he has done to me. I'm so grateful to him and the others (Black Thought, Common, Talib Kweli, Guru, ...) for this. Let's just hope that this kind of music will make a return someday in the future...
